Interesting note - Kyle does tend to come close to dying in quite a few episodes, actually. He is actually pronounced dead in an episode of Imaginationland, but manages to come back.

I'm surprised they didn't think of killing Stan. Aside from Kenny, he has the least personality of the group. At least with Kyle, they can make the Jewish jokes, but Stan... I think his main reason for existence is as a vehicle for Randy Marsh (funniest adult character) being on the show.

Kenny dying for good made me cry so hard. That they brought him back is the greatest thing ever. And if they had tried killing Kyle... um, if you think it didn't go over well when people realized Kenny wasn't supposed to be coming back.... yeah. Anyway with a little more time Kyle and Stan developed kinda distinct personalities, which is a far superior way to deal with the problem than killing off such a wonderful character. Killing Kyle would probably equal killing South Park.
