I love how Expert Village get's these MORONS that call themselves "experts". If you don't know what the heck your doing you should not call yourself an EXPERT!
If you are watching this to learn how to solder, stop watching now because this guy has no idea what he is doing. First, throw away that crap butane iron. You need at least a 25w soldering iron (best temp for 63/37 is 600F and for crap pb free is 800F). Second, use flux on both the wick and the connection you are trying to desolder. Third, if you are on the joint longer than 3-5 seconds you are going to damage the board and the components. Wick should not be used on Plated through holes.
i tried using this stuff to remove solder from a super nintendo cartridges battery connection...bloody awful stuff, fiddly as hell. In the end i just left the old solder on and put the new battery in. Solder pump next time
(i'm a bit inexperienced as i'm sure you can tell)
The thing I don't like about using wick is that it seems like it takes forever to suck up the solder. That's time you're heating up the board and item you're trying to remove.
@MYDRAGGIN84 You can use a 15 watt, but I would stay away from lead free solder. Try to go with a .31 gauge 63/37 tin/lead composition (Kester is a great brand). If you are going to get serious with computer boards then I would suggest getting a temperature controlled soldering station. Circuitspecialists has a "Black Jack" soldering station for about $40. Believe me the investment is worth it especially if you are going to be doing a lot of soldering.
This guy should go and work in a mine with a hammer

Epic failed usage of solder wick.
And if you let me say another thing: Buy whatever you want, but NOT A PUMP FOR 2 EUROS. These are broken after a couple of weeks of usage...

you suck, Jeff Naylor owns your ass!!!

Sorry but with your way you absolutely overheat and burn the component! Just buy a pump for 2-3 euros.

Yeah Ken and if I saw anyone using a braid like that I'd slap them round the head. Use flux
adebayor06 3 years ago
Ken, solder braid is not a braided solder. It is usually a copper braid that may or may not have a rosin flux.
