I've been looking up Dylan covers and yours are excellent! Hope to be able to achieve the level of playing you're at. I'll have to try using your chord voicings in standard tuning, as the closest I feel I've got to the original was using an open E (D with capo) tuning.
You're right I think the original would have either been open D with a capo on second or open E (but that means tuning up). If you wanted it to sound exactly the same, this is what you would have to do. This way you can get the feel of the open chords without messing around with the strings.
Sorry man, the video should be enough, but, can you give me an insight into your right hand, that is, e.g.. are you always bouncing off the base notes, is there a rule to when you go into a little cross picking? Or is it more random? Generally what is the key concept i should keep in mind to get that right hand down 100 % perfect, i'm almost there but just not quite.
I think I'm lightly hitting the bass note before each up/down/up strum and hitting it a bit harder at certain times (to emphasise each change of chord)
I'm trying to learn what your doing with the strumming, i don't know how to do this type where you pick out certain notes. Any chance of a tip or two? Thanks, love the cover!
dylanchords.info says this was originally open d but here standard tune is used, is there a chord chart somewhere that you can give us a link to? Cant make out what chord fingerings you do, just by looking at the clip.
That's about the size of it. I find that using my pinky on the 7th fret (but not when playing the A) makes it easier to move down the neck. Some won't like doing that. It's getting the feel for the strumming that's probably the hardest part of learning this tune.
@JonnDalton yes the pinky is probably the best bet here (provided you have a strong enough one), not so easy to take some of these chords, suspect the fingering gets easier in open-d configuration. Must admit too many mornings was a whole lot easier :-)
You're right Jonas. This would be easier to play in open D with a capo on second. I hate having to adjust tunings on my steel string guitar because I always burst strings. This is my attempt to make it sound a bit like the open D (or E) original without having to tune down. It could of course be played in the standard E/Emaj7/E7/A/Am etc but I don't think it has the same feel.
@JonnDalton thats a successful attempt, if you hadnt explicitly stated regular tuning I would have bet my dollar on an open tune, because of the sound of it. It think the most irritating thing with alternate tunings (beside breakages) is that you forget to revert back, so that next time you grab the guitar in an inspired moment you cant instantly play what happened to crop up :-(
You make it look so simple Jonn, excellent playing, its uncannily similar to listening to the record. This is the obvious choice of channel if you want really well-crafted dylan covers that leaves the pack behind.
Sounds AWESOME Jonn! Got excited this evening when I got a youtube subscription update e-mailed to me saying you uploaded this new cover. I new itd sound amazing and it does. You're Dylan covers simply couldn't be any better. Thanks for posting and keep em coming! :)

Gday Jon, this is a really great way to play this song, thanks for sharing. Shouldn't the 3's in 003330/(003300) be 2's?

That Sir, was fantastic - better than any other version on You Tube - or indeed, Dylan's own version.

Jonn, are you using an amplifier with echo effects? A fan!
thomassneade 1 year ago
@thomassneade
No it's not amplified at all. I do notice a strange echo effect at the beginning. I'm not sure why it should be.
