As you progress the computer equipment gets more modern, caves portraits get older and the dates are later in each abandoned area so you can gauge roughly when bring your daughter to work day occurred. All we can be sure of though is that chell is a daughter of an employee maybe adopted. But cave certainly was alive at the time of BYDTWD.

Technically Chell could have made that potato battery anywhere in the facility. Chell is adopted, yes, and Caroline was both a scientist and an employee. @Luxai no do you not understand that the levels are all sealed after various failed disastrous experiments. Dont you remember the huge vault doors you had to open to gain access? The equipment is of the date the area was sealed for instance in the first part of the lower levels there are line printers and they have dial telephones. Chell may well have gone on other BYDTWD's butone was sealed off on the day it happened or at least within a few days of it occurring along with clues to the date.
@captvimes I know those levels were sealed off. And FYI Cave was alive after that, as per the comic. It seems like they were almost done developing GLaDOS when he died. He probably wanted to use himself as base for GLaDOS, but he had already named Caroline his successor which makes it believeble that her mind and personality was used as base for GLaDOS AI - and about BYDTWD, where in the game does it say any of them was sealed off?

Just because Caroline was his assitant, doesnt mean she was involved with him. On top of that, we have no idea exactly when BYDTWD happened so you cant say for sure if she was still alive or not. It's possible that they downloaded Caroline into the GLaDOS system and BYDTWD might have been when she died. Chell surived and GLaDOS took her as a test subject.
This was just too much...As soon as the elevator started moving up the waterworks started. The translation just adds to the shock. I wish they'd make a portal movie like they did with Resident Evil Degeneration. But then again, whoever directed it would have just as much potencial to ruin it completely. I friggin love Portal. As for the ending of portal 1 Chell may not have been trying to kill Glados. The personality cores are just stuck on Glados and not a core part of her so logicly removing them shouldn't have killed her, Just changed her personality.
This song's lyrics are pretty much the final convincing factor, for me, that Caroline (who was technically part of GLaDOS) & Cave were her parents, making her full real name Chell Johnson. Cave always spoke well of Caroline and after he died, Caroline's spirit was transfered (possibly by force) into GLaDOS via a personality core, leaving Chell abandoned who, evidence also suggests, attended "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" (which "didn't go well") at Aperture Science during childhood.

She is, in a way. In the lower levels of Aperture Science ( where there are excerpts of Cave and Caroline speaking) you can find a couple hints to it. For example, somewhere there is a small science project that Cave and Caroline left in the labs during "Take you kid to work day". The project has Chell's name on it. GlaDos was made to host an electronic version of Caroline's mind. So mentally, GlaDos is Chell's mom, even if neither of them know it.
According to my research i'm pretty sure GLaDOS is Chell's mom {Caroline} since Wheatly in the beginning in the game said GLaDOS was once human also how GLaDOS said what Caroline said in Aperture Innovative Testing or whatever at the end the Announcer says Caroline deleted from system.Also if you actually listened to the oprea translation if you dont use common sense you'd realise she programs them to say all that stuff.Wow also my longest comment ever.

no, really, people always say "oh, the lyrics say this blahblahblah" but daugher is a term of endearment used in italian culture and well used in the writing of opera. this does not mean that Chell is GLaDOS' daughter, only that GLaDOS retains (or never got rid of) Caroline and that she has a connection with Chell to a near mother-daughter relationship. in this case, Occam's Razor is on my side.

once again i see this "GLaDOS is Chell's mom bull. she isn't. it isn't mathematically possible seeing as Cave Died in the 70's, and then Caroline was turned into an AI in the 80's or still 70's which later evolved into GLaDOS and also, the bring your daughter to work day was when GLaDOS both killed almost all staff in Aperture as well as took the children as test subjects. the project by Chell also says it has a special ingredient from "daddy" which means she was a daughter of a scientist.

But let's just face it, the percentage of those who thinks Chell is not Carolines daughter is very small, and like I said, they lack any support. Until Vavle states otherwise we will go along with what seems very likely.

@Luxai each of the sealed off sections of the lower area pre-glados have equipment and dates on the walls etc of the time period. As you progress the computer equipment gets more modern, caves portraits get older and the dates are later in each abandoned area so you can gauge roughly when bring your daughter to work day occurred. All we can be sure of though is that chell is a daughter of an employee maybe adopted. But cave certainly was alive at the time of BYDTWD.

@captvimes Well, even tho it looks like the "Bring your daughter to workday" occured on the uper levels, we can't be ENTIRELY sure about that. Technically Chell could have made that potato battery anywhere in the facility. Chell is adopted, yes, and Caroline was both a scientist and an employee. Remember the "BYDTWD" could have been an annual event. I withhold tho that Chell is the daughter of Caroline and Cave. There is no other theory being nearly as strongly hinted at.

@Luxai no do you not understand that the levels are all sealed after various failed disastrous experiments. Dont you remember the huge vault doors you had to open to gain access? The equipment is of the date the area was sealed for instance in the first part of the lower levels there are line printers and they have dial telephones. Chell may well have gone on other BYDTWD's butone was sealed off on the day it happened or at least within a few days of it occurring along with clues to the date.

@captvimes I know those levels were sealed off. And FYI Cave was alive after that, as per the comic. It seems like they were almost done developing GLaDOS when he died. He probably wanted to use himself as base for GLaDOS, but he had already named Caroline his successor which makes it believeble that her mind and personality was used as base for GLaDOS AI - and about BYDTWD, where in the game does it say any of them was sealed off?

@Luxai look, you're the one who has a terrible argument. yes, the Italian thing is up to debate, but the projects from BYDTWD are in the main facility, whereas Caroline was put into GLaDOS previous to the construction of the main facility. she may say child, but there are so many operas where if you translate it it'll be somebody saying something like "my daughter" or "my son", but it'll be a family friend or a distant relative, rather than them actually being father or mother and child.

Also, GLaDOS was activated when Aperture Science was still ran by humans, meaning the whole facility was in use. And the BYDTWD is in the levels currently being used by GLaDOS, but outside the test chambers. So, my argument is not terrible, and I have more support for my thesis than you do.

@ZenGamer190 1st, you obviously have no idea what your talking about, Cave didn't die till 86. 2nd, what does Cave even have to do with this? Just because Caroline was his assitant, doesnt mean she was involved with him. On top of that, we have no idea exactly when BYDTWD happened so you cant say for sure if she was still alive or not. It's possible that they downloaded Caroline into the GLaDOS system and BYDTWD might have been when she died. Chell surived and GLaDOS took her as a test subject.

This was just too much...As soon as the elevator started moving up the waterworks started. The translation just adds to the shock. If you assume that Chell always knew Glados were her mother it would explain why she always tried so hard in testing, It was the only way she could earn her mothers respect.
As for the ending of portal 1 Chell may not have been trying to kill Glados. The personality cores are just stuck on Glados and not a core part of her so logicly removing them shouldn't have killed her, Just changed her personality.

This song's lyrics are pretty much the final convincing factor, for me, that Caroline (who was technically part of GLaDOS) & Cave were her parents, making her full real name Chell Johnson. Cave always spoke well of Caroline and after he died, Caroline's spirit was transfered (possibly by force) into GLaDOS via a personality core, leaving Chell abandoned who, evidence also suggests, attended "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" (which "didn't go well") at Aperture Science during childhood.

She is, in a way. In the lower levels of Aperture Science ( where there are excerpts of Cave and Caroline speaking) you can find a couple hints to it. For example, somewhere there is a small science project that Cave and Caroline left in the labs during "Take you kid to work day". The project has Chell's name on it. GlaDos was made to host an electronic version of Caroline's mind. So mentally, GlaDos is Chell's mom, even if neither of them know it.
