q3 takes a lot more skill than q4. you have to rely way more on aiming than smarts in q4. quake kinda got into the same situation as cs did when source came out. q4 has better graphics bet less consistent game play and q3 was still considered the better game.

If you ask almost any writer on the staff of GotFrag, they would agree with me that Source, as a competitive game, will slowly lose momentum and eventually turn into something like what the CoD2 or DoD 1.3 competitive communities are today. It's not exactly "dying" because it's not as abrupt, but CS:Source will fall off of the map of competitive video gaming soon.

It's whatever game the sponsors want to support. They want a game that is easy to follow by spectators (that's why Valve introduced cl_minmodels 1 to reduce confusion of spectators). Plus sponsors want a game that the public think looks good, 1.6 doesn't fulfill that task and source doesn't have the gameplay to keep player interested. It's a combination of keeping the players motivated (1.6) and the public interested (source). Since neither are combines those aspects, both will die eventually.
