Hi, man. I trully enjoy your demos! This shootout vid in particular helped me to decide between these two excellent pedals. The Pro Plus being really fatter I have no doubts anymore. Thanks!
The pro plus uses an op amp in place of one of the output transistors, and in an area of the gain stage which makes it less compressed sounding. It is louder, but the tone is different too. I've played an analogman modded od9 next to the pro plus, and the pro plus is just a little clearer, with all the crunch you need. Hard to tell on youtube but the mid boost switch is super useable. I dig it.
I like the pro plus, I think it is a superior pedal...HOWEVER, just to play devil's advocate... the pro plus is louder at the same volume setting due to its circuitry...it would be interesting to see how both pedals sound when the OD9's volume is turned up to match the plus. Then you could really compare tone; louder pedals usually sound better, all things equal.
@overlook77 I'd rather see it with the OD9+'s volume down a bit to match levels, that'd be a bit easier to do and that way you wouldn't color the tone by adding other factors to the mix.
My main issue with this though is that MOST people equate louder with Better, which isn't always the case and results sometimes change when all things are equal.
@scrotzki789 however, if both pedals sound the same EXCEPT for the volume, you could save money and get the OD-9 and and just turn it up louder. If they still sounded different at the same volume levels, then it would be good to know that. At different volumes its difficult to compare the pedals in this capacity.
my favourite TS808 clone is the MEK Tubedrive TD-1, made by uk-electronic[dot]de. A hand-made pedal, built to exact 808 specs with true bypass, and it´s cheaper than a lot of chinese crap.
This has gotta be the one and only Jack Black. If not it sure as hell sounds like him. Awesome comparison. I like both, but I favor od9 pro +. The mid range is sweet. Real good clarity.
Hey guys, can anyone tell me if the OD9 (or the Pro model) would do the trick for that extra gain and punch I want to get from my 6505+ 112 combo at bedroom volume levels? Should I get an attenuator instead? I just wanna drive the power tubes a bit more. Cheers.
MAXON OD-9 - mids and low end has a nice sizzle to them
OD-9 PRO+ - sounds louder, fuller, and slightly brighter, more sizzle in the treble range with chords
***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***
@dnnysrock You've got a great start with that strat and the Vox! With those pieces of gear, all you need is a brighter, more transparent light-to-med overdrive pedal and some practice. According to a Premier Guitar youtube video, he's just using a Klon, Blues Breaker, and TS10. Personally, I'd go with a mod'ed Boss Blues Driver. I've been able to get some great tones Mayer'ish tones with that pedal. Get one from Guitar Center, if you dont' like it, return it.
@Ncuab i can play mayr is hard but anyways he has several ts808 tub screamer but i don't the money for avintage one .. the blues breaker is a marshall pedal right? tthe y don't make those anymore they bb2 and it sucks Lol mayer said that an i believe him the klon i don't know they sell those?..
i think i want a tube screamer i think i could use on some other sttuff also
@dnnysrock Very cool! Yes the Blues Breaker is a Marshall pedal. Don't get the new silver one, get the old, black ones. I think a Keeley Boss BD-2 BluesDriver sounds great for cleanish/low-gain Mayer stuff.
Yes, the Klon is no longer being made, but there are some decent sounding clones out there. Like the Lovepedal Kalamazoo.
The Wampler Ecstacy is great for Mayer stuff too because the Ecstacy is quite "Dumble-like." Dumble is the amp that John uses.
@Ncuab you see im from peru and i can get my hand ono otrher stuff that aren't line 6 boss elector hjarmonix soo.. that's why i can buy a tube screamer , a maxon one in your opinion i doesn't do the mayer trick?
@dnnysrock Tube Screamers are great sounding and flexible, tone-wise, for low-to-med-gain sounds. IMO, my favorite TS is actually the BYOC Overdrive 2. You can build it or buy it pre-built. GearManDude, reviewed this flexible, TS'ish pedal and it left him speechless. Again, it's called the Build Your Own Clone OD2 OverDrive 2.
@dnnysrock Peru? Very Cool! You're english is pretty good! I'm impressed!
Yeah, the BYOC OD2 is not easy to make. I agree, I like Maxon pedals more than Ibanez. IMO, I would go for the Maxon 808. The TS10 that Mayer uses has more of a 808 sound. I also believe that the feel of an 808 is more responsive and transparent, compared to the OD9 or OD-9 Pro+. The OD9 & Pro+ are more flexible and have more features, but I think an 808 is great call!
@Ncuab mmmm i thinnk im getting the st9 pro plus. check out the demo by aguy name arielpozzo i think that one is more versatylt and can cover mayer territory
i just bought the ibanez ts9 reissue and the maxon od9 pro+, can't wait to test and compere how powerfuul they are if i uses as a boost for my peavey 5150.....
thx for the review hope someday u can review when the maxon od9 pro+ uses as a boost. but anyway thx.......
i just bougt ibanez ts-9 and maxon od 9 pro+, but can't wait as soon as posible to arrive in my home to compere how powerfull between maxon and ts9 as a boost to my peavey 5150......
thx for the demo
i wish u cant demo when the od9 pro + use as a boost.thx anyway......
Very cool demo. I got an OD-9 I run in front of my mesa. I love it. I have the gain set all the way down and the output turned all the way up. Great pedal. You have the best demo's on the internet.
I was very close to buy the OD-9, but after to see this review I'll buy the OD9 Pro. Only have a question: ¿¿ Is True ByPass ??

Why does everybody use EL84 amps
to demo TS type pedals.
Those amps tend to be real middy sounding
and the pedal adds to that mid sound.
My .02 anyway.
Give us some EL34s or 6L6s please
