Why not just keep the blade in your center instead of the hip. not saying what shes doing is wrong, but when i do knife trainign the blade is in my center in front.

Later this hand was incorporated as the "check hand", which has offensive and defensive advantages. I think this training is meant to be simple for those with little or no training. A hand that stays close to the body is harder to grab or damage, while still free to block if needed.
HER HAND IS ACROSS THE CHEST is simply to protect her vitals. if 2 are squaring off like that BOTH wil get cut. hopefully the Good girl avoids a shot to the heart or lung while delivering a kill shot. and doesn't bleed out from being cut on the defending arm before medical attention.
