In the past, before the that bad westernization, ALL people from a village helped a men to build his house. Now, that poor men, must build his house alone, no help from other villagers.

    In the past was different.

  • Thanks for the post. The church Ziona Tapu in your clip will be undergoing major renovations middle of 2007. The coins were used for decoration and are of peruvian or chilean origin, unfortunately most have been stolen over the years and not sure if any remain. Mauke has a very interesting history and is relatively unspoilt due its isolation which is a good thing, and you won't find a friendlier people anywhere!

  • Thanks for the information. For those who don't know, the Ziona Tapu (or "divided") church was once a stunning rainbow of colours inisde, and was described by a great New Zealand architect as one of the finest churches in the world. Hopefully, the renovations will restore it to that former glory...although I think that even as it is today, it's stunningly beautiful and very spiritual.

  • The reason why there are peruvian coins, is because the cook islands were used for slave trade by peruvian black birders. The pieces of eight were most probably used to buy tribes people, to be sent to peru.
