4WD and AWD can not do it's job if the person driving is failing! Whoever taught them how to drive on snow an ice or for that matter, AT ALL is an idiot! YOU NEVER JUST GUN IT!
Ground clearance, in this, Highlander is awful. What is hanging underneath, right in the middle of vehicle? That is major No-No. Next time they should change and take away that boxy potential snow and mud hook.
Any AWD vehicle with proper winter tires will do well in the snow. On the other side, you can have the best off road vehicle in the world like the Range Rovers and with stock tires; so called "all season tires", this is what you will get. All these SUVS come from factory with All Season Tires for MPG efficiency and comfort. So stop blaming it on the car and blame it on your lack of knowledge.
The only true awd's are Subaru, Audi, Mitsubishi, Land Rover/ Range Rover and that new 2 door jeep looking toyota. Anything else is a joke. I drove them all last winter to see how good they are.
I've got a 2008 FWD Highlander, I live in GreenBay, and we had one of the worst winters in my 37 yrs on earth last year, and my Highlander was excellent in the snow. wouldn't trade it for anything, and I have no need for a 4 wheel drive. And #2 reason, the original tires on all toyotas stink, but at 28,000 i put a set of Firestone Destination LE's on, and I'm going into my 3rd winter with them. I'm ready!
you probably still have stock tires. the stock bridgestones or toyos suck! i had to replace em after 22k miles. i replaced them with yokohama avid envigors. i live in CT and when snow comes this year, im gonna purposely put snow everywhere around and under the car and record it getting out and i will put it as a response to this video to prove you wrong that highlanders are bad in snow.
the stock tires just are horrible. go on tirerack and look at their reviews and surveys LOL
It's the tires, my friend has one of these and it's great in snow!! They have a really steep swervey hill at their ranch they climb to get to their house and their plow broke so they couldn't plow the road and their 2008 Toyota highlander 3.5 v6 made it up fine in 1 foot of snow when their trucks always break traction and have to chain up them and sometimes they can't even make it up In a 4wd truck chained up!! So ya it's not the car
its weird, i tho cars that have 4WD are pretty good on snow. it seems like some cars are, not all of them. is it just the highlander thats bad, or the Rav4 too. bc if the are bad id rather buy something else that has 4WD or AWD suv for the snow.. any suggestions?
This is not an accurate description of the vehicles capabilities. The person was gunning it which will spin any tires in the snow. There is a snow mode and a traction control button that help, and if the tires were the Toyo original equipment I am not surprised. I have a pair of Michelin LTx M/s tires and if you put the car in snow mode I can get up anything. Barring major ice, which nothing will grab on except chains or good studs.
Hey lady in video....wheels ALSO spin in a four wheel drive car...a four wheel drive system means that not only do the front OR rear wheels make the car go...but all FOUR of them do...which is TWICE as much traction.
@ferrari4002 thx for the tips wat if the snow is only like 1-3 inches deep, and the tires are toyo a20 all season, and like i said before fwd, and it has the snow button for "extra traction"?
@rcdude747 The snow button in a highlander decreases throttle response..which does not give the wheels more traction persay..but will decrease slipping..if that's what you meant.
@rcdude747 A FWD one of these will go in about 6,7 inches of snow FINE with snow tires, but will not be nearly as good going uphill...So you can manage a FWD with snow tires, but i'd always go with 4WD.
i think its because you dont know how to drive it mine works fine

The problem lies with the driver here. Not the vehicle.

you need either a 4WD highlander or a pair of chain. My 4WD highlander can eat 2 feet of snow in sequoia with stock tires.

Also turn of the traction control and dont press snow leave it in awd in these kind of situations.. Just a lil advice :)

@ferrari4002 whats wrong with the car?
Gtbomb1 5 months ago
@Gtbomb1
Nothing was wrong with the car. The was car new when we bought it. We just wanted to show you what it looks like when the car is on snow.

@ferrari4002 this is any car in the snow. it sounded like you did not like the car. simple cause of not reading correctly lol

@ferrari4002 It's all about having winter tires or not... Any car would respond like that or worst without the proper tires...

so do you think a fwd drive one of these, will get stuck in snow
rcdude747 1 year ago
@rcdude747
The FWD will most likely get stuck. However, the type of tires (all season/snow tires) make a big difference.
If you want to minimize your chances of being stuck on snow, your suv should: 1.- Have 4WD, 2.- Limited Slip Differential 3.- Snow tires.
