The back ref is suppose to look at the clock, and then once he sees it hit :00 then he looks down to see if the ball is snap. If the ball is in the process of being snapped by the time he looks down at the ball then the play is good to go. NCAA even says their is ALWAYS a lag between the time the ref sees the clock strike :00 and when he sees the ball get snapped. This was reviewed by the NCAA and ESPN and the refs made the correct call.

ESPN's clock expired.They run that clock from a trailer outside the stadium. It's called media delay, that's why in most cases when the game is close and time is winding down, they just put a camera on the clock and substitute out that on the TV scoreboard, to prevent people from saying what all these notre dame fans are saying.

Forgot to mention, if this wasn't a delay of game, (using sparty logic, it takes a referee a few moments to blow his whistle) then the clockgate of 2001 vs. U of M time should have expired. Sparty handling clock stops clock when Smoker takes the snap with one second remaining. Smoker takes ball and spikes the ball, clock still not moving. The back ref is suppose to look at the clock, and then once he sees it hit :00 then he looks down to see if the ball is snap. If the ball is in the process of being snapped by the time he looks down at the ball then the play is good to go. NCAA even says their is ALWAYS a lag between the time the ref sees the clock strike :00 and when he sees the ball get snapped. This was reviewed by the NCAA and ESPN and the refs made the correct call.

4th adn 14 from the 29 should have become 4th and 19 from the 34 yard line. People talking about "loss of down" and garbage like that are confused. Sparty should've faced the option of a 51 yard FG or trying to convert 4th and a mile. In hindsight, the likelihood of success on either choice is low and ND probably wins that game. Wow.

ESPN's clock expired.They run that clock from a trailer outside the stadium. It's called media delay, that's why in most cases when the game is close and time is winding down, they just put a camera on the clock and substitute out that on the TV scoreboard, to prevent people from saying what all these notre dame fans are saying.
Both teams played great. One had to lose. Grow up

Sigh, we shouldn't be in a position to lose a game by a no-call, bad call, etc., but it was a delay of game based on the field clock as well as ESPN's clock. I'm also pretty sure you aren't allowed to bear hug a defender to the ground. BK didn't seem too upset over it though and none of it's reviewable. When the clock on ESPN (Which isn't the official clock) switches from say 0:02 to 0:01, it's switching from 0:02.00 to 0:01.99, so when the clock switches to 0:00, it's technically 0:00.99, meaning they have just under a second of the clock being at 0:00 to get the play off. It is a rule that if a receiver is forced out of bounds, he can indeed be the next person to touch the ball so long as he makes immediate re-entry. If roles were reversed someone from ND would be touted for the Heisman and the explanation would be "God's clock ticked slowly" to help salvage the game for ND. The center appears to be in motion to me before the GAME clock reaches zero (the game clock & tv clock were not the same). Granted it was very close, but not enough that you throw the flag. As this is a road game didn't the Irish have their choice of officials?

For the support of the conference, we should ALWAYS route for the Big 10 school in a non-conference game. Why do I say this? Forgot to mention, if this wasn't a delay of game, (using sparty logic, it takes a referee a few moments to blow his whistle) then the clockgate of 2001 vs. U of M time should have expired. Sparty handling clock stops clock when Smoker takes the snap with one second remaining. Smoker takes ball and spikes the ball, clock still not moving. If it takes a moment for the official to blow his whistle to stop play, time should have expired. So basically 2 biggest wins for MSU last decade a fraud.

Sorry Albo, but the offensive PI that you see is actually the ND dfenders taking out the primary receiver on the play. #24 is the one who's supposed to receive the pass, but the ND defenders took him out. The clock was at zero, but the BigEast officials stand by their call. Very close. Very unfortunate for ND. Should be nuts in South Bend next year.

so many penalties missed on this play, besides the delay of game call you can pretty much take your pick of holding, offensive PI or illegal blocking downfield, look at the mich st player just pull down both the defenders so the reciever can run free. ps im glad that the dumbass mich st coach had a heart attack, his heart prob couldnt deal with the guilt of this play

I love how people except so much from Notre Dame. MSU can have this win, who cares. Notre Dame has time to get good again. I mean they have a new coach and a new quarterback. What I mean by a new quarterback is the fact that this is his first starting season. You should not except a perfect season. This is a minor loss that means nothing. Just wait a few more seasons and we will be back to a good team. I realize Notre Dame hasn't had a good team in a long time.
