This game had its ups and downs. I did eventually beat it, but not before frequently putting it down for months at a time out of sheer boredom. The problem is when the game becomes purely trial and error. Yeah, areas 3 and 4 are guessing games. It's not very satisfying gameplay to try 10 different rooms, each taking 5-10 minutes and draining your health, only to find that you've gotten nowhere. Area 5 is a bit more fun (less guessing), and area 6 is god-awesome, but shredder was WAY too easy.
Actually im one of the few that really knows how to play this game. If others did as well and used the switching mechanic the way it was intended. Most of the hate for this game would change.

FINALLY a game reviewer that loves this game as much as I do. I LOVE THIS GAME!!! I hate beat 'em up games so I never liked the turtle arcade games.... *waits for flaming trolls* The single downside to this game IMO is the lack of the TMNT cartoon theme song.

Great review! Good to hear a positive review for once. Everyone hates this game for all the wrong reasons. People hate it because it's too difficult for them, but if you invest the time, it's really not that hard of a game. Come to think of it, the graphics are really well done for the time this game was released. I'm not ashamed to admit to liking this game at all. In fact, it's better then most of the TMNT games that came out in recent years.
great video im also a huge fan of TMNT and i also agree on how well done the nes version of the game was it was very challenging and took me a very long time to beat the game under 30mins my best time so far is 25:28 i plan on uploading the video in full very soon and i also agree about the water dam it's probably one of my favorite levels ive been getting requests to do a speed-run for it on the nintendo wii virtual console as-well and to be honest i am thinking about it
Okay, I can kind of get that someone would like this game, but really, the water level?! oh my gosh, you must be the first I've ever heard of! haha, cudos! I actually had to replay this game at the age of 14 to beat it, and as soon as I was done I threw away the controller and was like "Yeah, I'm done with this." It's been gathering dust for 5 years now.
I agree. This game is classic, it did set the stage for every other title and I do love/hate. but I could never pass the turtle van stage. It's ridiculous, the level on stages and enemies you fight without proper life items and support, nor continues.
Never had a problem with the game. Have owned it since 1990. It was hella hard as a kid but it's a good solid game. Beat it first with game genie then years later legit. (I use the sonic boom gun for the final corridor in the technodrome. You have to use that if you have any kind of score or you will get killed by getting kicked in the face by those blue flying assholes).
this game is the shit, i'm 26 now, and I still can't pass it haha I got very far though, all the way iside the technodrome, i was going to fight shredder but those fucking flying robot ninjas with laser guns and a jet pack killed me, after all day playing to get there i didn't fell like trying it again for a while.

This game is balls. It is impossibly hard, even for adult players, yet its target audience is kids. There are no extra lives or continues, and pizzas (to give you health) are rare. If you fall off a ledge or into the sewer, you will have to restart the level. Tanks on the map screen and the spike wall will kill you in one hit. If you want to get any further than the dam level, you'll need cheats and/or savestates. Oh, and a much better arcade version was released before this game.
Turtles Arcade released in fall of 1989. TMNT Nes released on the famicom in 1988 and US Spring or Summer of 1989. This is the 1st Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game ever made. The 1st game isn't going to be the best.
No, Im just better at the game then AVGN and used the switching out with the Turtles, whenever one was low on health or used the close and long range combat mechanics to minimize damage to the heroes in the half shell to begin with.

I was 5 years old when I got my NES and this was the game I got with it. I really have no clue as to how I beat this game back then, it took me more than a year to get there haha. but the game was based off of the archie comic notice the all wearing red bandanas? the turtules only wore diffrent colour bandanas in the t.v. show so that little kids could tell them apart :)

I have to say, it's very refreshing to see a positive review of this game, although I agree with most of the negative reviews on this game, I think the game is still a good game, there is some terrible game design in it, but I still enjoy it, you could class it as a bad game, but as bad games go, this is a really good bad game... if that makes sense (Donatello's my favourite)
You know there's one thing in this game that doesn't make sense. In level 3 if you fall in the water in the sewers you drown and are sent back outside, but in level 2 you're swimming around disarming bombs, so it's obvious the turtles can swim in the game so ..what the hell?
this game is NES hard. I dont think i ever made it past the 3rd last stage in the technodrome. personally, for the NES i rank this 3rd after battletoads and mario bros 3

What about the turtle van and turtle blimp, those are from the cartoon. The enemies in this game are original, they needed to make a bunch of monsters. They aren't from the comic nor the cartoon.
I've watched a lot of your reviews and you do them in a pretty well organized fashion. But if you don't mind a bit of constructive criticisism (from another amateur reviewer) sometimes you drag on and repeat yourself. This can be streamlined. I also like your random tidbits of personal memory and humor, but I feel like you should better prepare your monologue so you can avoid redundancies, "and it is one of my ALL TIME favorite video games of ALL TIME." Things like this can turn off some people.
great review! this game is hard, but it makes it that much more rewarding when you kick shredder's ass. the classic design really shines in the areas of music, sprites and originality. you just got yourself another subscriber.
There where so many games in those times that where on the nes and snes that are insanely hard like double dragon, super ghouls n ghosts, punch out etc ...
besides Mario, This is the main game I think about when talking about the NES. I do remember the cartoon, and I remember watching episodes in kindergarten. I loved it as a kid, but always got frustrated with it. Definitely one of my favorite NES games. The music was probably why I loved it so much.

Everyone in my family LOVED ninja turtles, And we must of had almost every action figures, Leonardo was my favorite and every time i would see a Leo action figure id beg my parents for it even if i already had it XD. I liked the newest TMNT movie, but i really dont like the new cartoons of it...

Personally, I wasn't a fan of this game but this review brought up some good points. Maybe it was just because I wasn't as big a TMNT fan as my friends were.
The "sonic boom gun" looks a lot more like Sagat's fireball to me, but I digress... I always ended up with Raph as my last guy because he sucked. His sai are about three inches long in this game. The graphics are average, but the game has pretty good depth for what is at heart a side scroller. I loved it when it came out, though it played a lot harder than the audience it was intended for, or any audience for that matter. This game was featured in "The Wizard" movie. The dad played it.

I did beat this game on Wii VC. Although I was this close to killing somebody. Especially near the end of the game. But once you get to shred head he is a push over. The techno drome wasn't a push over though.
I never read the comics. Could someone tell some of the differences between the comics & the cartoon. Only one I know is that they also loved beer in the comics.
what i know about the comics is the turtles in the comics were more dark and violet when the cartoon show in 1987 were more lighter and kid friendly and also the turtles all wear red bandanas as opose to the turtles in the cartoon wear diffrent color bandanas and master splinter was just a rat who got mutant by the ooze when he touch the turtles that he found in the sweres as opose splinter was the ninja master omato yoshi and was mutant by the shredder and the foot solders were real people
as opose to the foot solders being robots that shredder got from krang from dimansion X and also baxter stockman was a african american in the comics as opose to baxter stockmen being a white guy in the cartoon and april o neil was a asistant of baxter stockmen in the comics as opose april being a news reporter for channel 6 news and there was a turtle charecter that wasnt in the cartoon but in the comics and the turtle game from konami's tournament fighters a female ninja working for the foot
Casey Jones was in the Turtles Cartoon. I can't remember if he appear in the late 80s or 90s. The 1st episode with Casey is called Out Law Hero i think. This Casey sounded like a Young Clint Eastwood. And he dressed like a bum in ripped gray sweat pants and spotted lame one liners all the time.

after playing this game again after many many years, and getting to understand it i LOVE the game. yes the difficulty is hard as heck, but it takes practice. i can get to the last level without losing 1 turtle....then i lost horribly in the last level
Oh man, I remember playing this on the Commedore 64 when I was a kid. I never made it past the hoover dam, still, I love this game. I didn't even know that you could switch turtles, as there was only one button on my joystick.

All games I remember as a kid were super hard. I was like 9 years old and my first nes game my parents bought me was metal gear (it was cheaper than adventure island, the game i wanted...so they got that instead) a 9 year old kid should never feel that defeated. turtles was a breeze compared to that.
this game was good for its time..but compared to most of the other classics imo this was the smb2 of the tmnt franchise it just didnt flow like any of the others

yep thats exactly wat i was thinking when i wrote but there are others aswel. the angry video game nerd said it better then i ever could. he absalutly trashed this game, i wouldnt go asfar as him, but there were serious problems with TMNT, there is still some fun to be had play though.
the technodrome battle i felt was really epic, i remember play it when i was a kid and i never had seen a boss so big before. it scared me.
But I also hate this game with a passion. I hated it as a kid, and I hate it today.
This game was just too frustrating for a seven year old. My parents actually took away my NES for an entire month after a yelling fit I had while playing it.
That's why the AVGN is so popular today: everyone remembers the frustratingly hard games that were made in the eighties and how we would go apeshit while playing them.
I love Turtles. In fact I spent a whole day watching all the videos of Turtles I had. I have not really tried this game out. But now it feels like I really have to. Thanks a bunch. Oh, and dont say that you like it to AVGN, he will explode.

this game is the shit, i'm 26 now, and I still can't pass it haha I got very far though, all the way iside the technodrome, i was going to fight shredder but those fucking flying robot ninjas with laser guns and a jet pack killed me, after all day playing to get there i didn't fell like trying it again for a while.

Zelda 2 was the first in '88, this was the second winner. Third was Super Mario Bros 3...
This game won the same award Mario 64 won in '96 and Resident Evil 4 won in 2005.
It's a good game, but it's fuken hard(you cannot beat the Amiga Version without cheating)... but that is why it is Good in many ways.

This game is balls. It is impossibly hard, even for adult players, yet its target audience is kids. There are no extra lives or continues, and pizzas (to give you health) are rare. If you fall off a ledge or into the sewer, you will have to restart the level. Tanks on the map screen and the spike wall will kill you in one hit. If you want to get any further than the dam level, you'll need cheats and/or savestates. Oh, and a much better arcade version was released before this game.

Turtles Arcade released in fall of 1989. TMNT Nes released on the famicom in 1988 and US Spring or Summer of 1989. This is the 1st Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game ever made. The 1st game isn't going to be the best.

No, Im just better at the game then AVGN and used the switching out with the Turtles, whenever one was low on health or used the close and long range combat mechanics to minimize damage to the heroes in the half shell to begin with.

I was 5 years old when I got my NES and this was the game I got with it. I really have no clue as to how I beat this game back then, it took me more than a year to get there haha. This game is sooo hard it had my stomach turning every second of it and that's part of what made it great. the sence of accomplishment when u finally beat it

I've been a huge Turtle fan since I was a little kid. I like how the look of the game echoes the original comics, like how the box art is taken from one of the original comic book covers with the turtles all wearing red masks. I'm gonna buy this game whenever I get a Nintendo Entertainment System.

I have to say, it's very refreshing to see a positive review of this game, although I agree with most of the negative reviews on this game, I think the game is still a good game, there is some terrible game design in it, but I still enjoy it, you could class it as a bad game, but as bad games go, this is a really good bad game... if that makes sense (Donatello's my favourite)

You know there's one thing in this game that doesn't make sense. In level 3 if you fall in the water in the sewers you drown and are sent back outside, but in level 2 you're swimming around disarming bombs, so it's obvious the turtles can swim in the game so ..what the hell?

In the cartoon; the foot soldier were human.

I've watched a lot of your reviews and you do them in a pretty well organized fashion. But if you don't mind a bit of constructive criticisism (from another amateur reviewer) sometimes you drag on and repeat yourself. This can be streamlined. I also like your random tidbits of personal memory and humor, but I feel like you should better prepare your monologue so you can avoid redundancies, "and it is one of my ALL TIME favorite video games of ALL TIME." Things like this can turn off some people.

besides Mario, This is the main game I think about when talking about the NES. I do remember the cartoon, and I remember watching episodes in kindergarten. I loved it as a kid, but always got frustrated with it. Definitely one of my favorite NES games. The music was probably why I loved it so much.

I still think this would've been better as a beat 'em up. like 2,3,4, or the arcade game. After all, back in the late 80-early 90s, TMNT games were synonymous with cooperative play.

The "sonic boom gun" looks a lot more like Sagat's fireball to me, but I digress... I always ended up with Raph as my last guy because he sucked. His sai are about three inches long in this game. The graphics are average, but the game has pretty good depth for what is at heart a side scroller. I loved it when it came out, though it played a lot harder than the audience it was intended for, or any audience for that matter. This game was featured in "The Wizard" movie. The dad played it.

I did beat this game on Wii VC. Although I was this close to killing somebody. Especially near the end of the game. But once you get to shred head he is a push over. The techno drome wasn't a push over though.

what i know about the comics is the turtles in the comics were more dark and violet when the cartoon show in 1987 were more lighter and kid friendly and also the turtles all wear red bandanas as opose to the turtles in the cartoon wear diffrent color bandanas and master splinter was just a rat who got mutant by the ooze when he touch the turtles that he found in the sweres as opose splinter was the ninja master omato yoshi and was mutant by the shredder and the foot solders were real people

Casey Jones was in the Turtles Cartoon. I can't remember if he appear in the late 80s or 90s. The 1st episode with Casey is called Out Law Hero i think. This Casey sounded like a Young Clint Eastwood. And he dressed like a bum in ripped gray sweat pants and spotted lame one liners all the time.

after playing this game again after many many years, and getting to understand it i LOVE the game. yes the difficulty is hard as heck, but it takes practice. i can get to the last level without losing 1 turtle....then i lost horribly in the last level

Oh man, I remember playing this on the Commedore 64 when I was a kid. I never made it past the hoover dam, still, I love this game. I didn't even know that you could switch turtles, as there was only one button on my joystick.

Thing is this guy is obviously good at these games, AVGN is not. I got this game for christmas when i was a kid, it was killer.
All games I remember as a kid were super hard. I was like 9 years old and my first nes game my parents bought me was metal gear (it was cheaper than adventure island, the game i wanted...so they got that instead) a 9 year old kid should never feel that defeated. turtles was a breeze compared to that.

yep thats exactly wat i was thinking when i wrote but there are others aswel. the angry video game nerd said it better then i ever could. he absalutly trashed this game, i wouldnt go asfar as him, but there were serious problems with TMNT, there is still some fun to be had play though.
the technodrome battle i felt was really epic, i remember play it when i was a kid and i never had seen a boss so big before. it scared me.

But I also hate this game with a passion. I hated it as a kid, and I hate it today.
This game was just too frustrating for a seven year old. My parents actually took away my NES for an entire month after a yelling fit I had while playing it.
That's why the AVGN is so popular today: everyone remembers the frustratingly hard games that were made in the eighties and how we would go apeshit while playing them.
