@moukidelmar actually, no, the tension lines on the braces take the weight off of the users ankles, he was able to walk just fine, the shoes are mounted to the sled as well, he doesnt have to do much to balance.
@Crixe sorry for the late reply, busy life, there arent any real blueprints for these, they were constructed out of a pair of high strength crutches and a few bits and bobbles. I highly recommend renting Underworld Evolution, as there is a making of feature that goes in depth over digitigrade stilt prosthetics, with many upclose details and such, it was a source of inspiration for this project.
@jcbrownproductions Renting it? I own it heh... I've watched it several times over and come up with several designs. Yours sound like aluminum. I'm thinking of doing carbon wrapped over an aluminum framework for more spring with less metal, did you have any issues with the weight or spring in the step at speeds? Seems like all you need on these is a front rubber tubes to give you some pull forward. Watching the video it seemed like you where straining a bit to stand. Still good.
@Crixe This video was the first walk in the stilts, they, of course, have been improved upon since then. Using medical grade aluminum crutches led to a lightweight, high strength solution. These stilts were used by multiple people, including a 250 pound guy, never had any problems with strain, balance, or excessive weight. The stilts were eventually covered and given a large foot, used in a demon dragon costume, which won first place :) Would love to see your work when you post it
@jcbrownproductions Hoping to have something up in a few months but bad time of year not only to build but to test. I'll wait till it warms up outside. I hate winter. For now I'll prototype till I go for steel. I have connections to a company that does laser steel cutting for me for cheep on up to half inch thick steel so if I use any metal I won't have to cut it myself. I'm working on the mask/body more then anything right now I'm on hold because of holidays. Just so many ways to build legs.
@jcbrownproductions Attach two springs to the sides of the feet length wise that might help doing a Y style cross seems to work in the back with the front it varies.
I'm amazed at the response these stilts have had, and I'm glad a lot of people are using some of the design elements for their own stilts. I've been working on quite a few updates to these, and also a number of other projects. Keep your eye on Joe, and my channels for more fun. The next project is a working steampunk spiderman webshooter!!!
I have a pair of slightly bulkier DG stilts, and there is more wood projecting back from the bottom of the "toe", more like a sideways "A". I was worried about taking off that back part and losing my balance, but looking closer at the DG stilts, I see I can do that with little problem. Thanks for the Demo. :)
He is not walking on his heels, the weight of his body is supported by tension lines and the padded support on his shins. he can actually balance quite well in these.
Got proof of that Killer? did not think so. Even so there is no reason to be a dick about their design when they are in prototype stage. As much as people love VW cars, the first was designed by hitler.. this ugly ass thing dubbed "The Thing".. it went from that to what the VW is today due to progressive evolution of products. Just try to look at it and see what it can become and be possitive please :/
I've seriously been wondering about digi stilts for a while... Are they comfortable to walk with? I plan on making some for a costume to wear in a convention, possibly three days straight...
I know this is probably an old video by now, but have you tried rounding the pads of the feet? I imagine it would make the walk smoother and allow for a better walking surface.
Not really, This is still within the first 15 minutes of me actually wearing them after completion. I've had a few people now put them on who have never walked in stilts, and are walking just fine in about five minutes. It does take a little getting used to with the toe pointed down, but they work really well.
Purpose and function, is for costuming in film. This makes it appear as though the wearer has reverse articulated legs. These will be built into a Draconic type character.
The prototypes themselves were constructed from a pair of crutches, and the shoes were $10 cheapos from Walmart. All in all, it cost me about $60 to build them. I will be posting more about the construction on my myspace, and also making them available for sale with an updated version. Check the description for my myspace link.
Duude the super light frame is Haawwt. How much'd cost? We chose the pine cuz it's uber cheap and accessible with slim budgets and normal tools. Any tips for picking up and working with metal cheaply?? Gotta post your plans, we did with our videos, and we got tons of useful feedback so we were able to super improve our design on subsequent stilts!
So I have to ask... do you have plans available for these? I would love to make a pair! Great job! Let me know if it is possible to get a set a plans and a materials list! Thanks!
very cool

This "killer" dude seems like a jerk. But I can't be bothered looking for his comment.
They're pretty neat. The angle could be even steeper, I think it would add balance and it would take some strain off the thighs.

They are epic, they are just a bit too leaned back

needs a tail to balance, that way u could lean forward more..

I'd really like to see some blue prints of these I'm working on a similar version using carbon fiber myself. So any ideas would help.

Hmm, I think you'd have much less trouble walking if you extended the heel of the "foot" to extend to or ever so slightly passed your real foot.

It looks like it takes a fair amount of concentration to keep balanced on those. Is there a way to widen the angle of the base triangle...do-hick?

jcbrownproductions 2 years ago
no, these are pretty cool, the only thing would probably be for future reference, maybe make the ankle under the toe so you can balance easier.

How did you manage to attach your shoes to the metal thing that you stand on?
HOw much did you spend on the metal stuff? how did you work on it? This is a nice vid, I bet it needs some rubber soles too for a better grip no?
Nice shoes by the way :)
