It was the biggest eruption in recorded history, but in human history there was a bigger one, right in Indonesia, at Lake Toba. A decades ago, hardly anyone visited Tambora's crater, but now some do.
Here in the States is Crater Lake which is another neat spot.
Nice. No im not gonna do it with guides. So we're gonna carry it all ourselves. Planning to do Rinjani soon too! Good to know water there is good. Thanks for all the advice!
Awesome! Im assuming then that since u had the car with you carrying water wasnt an issue. Im probably bringing a water purifier i understand water sources around volcanoes are high in sulphur content so im not sure now.Im planning to do it without guides tho. Gonna be fun!
@zeeresa You are right about water except I would scrap the purifier: on Tambora and most volcanoes (one exception is Rinjani that has some very hot and chemically charged springs by the beautiful crater lake) there is no usable water. As you said however you will have a guide, most likely two; they do not mind being porters as well and carry the water you need that is not a lot as temperatures on the slopes and further up are quite mild.
On hikes like these that take over a few nights to summit, whats the deal with water? The barren top half im sure theres no water source and u dont carry 20 1.5litre bottles do you? Pardon the thousand questions! I wanna do this! You may mail me at zeeresa@gmail.com Cheers!!
Amazing! Narrator's voice brings a more mystical and dramatic feel to the experience! Sound alot like John Turturro from Mr Deeds hah. Brunvit this has fueled a new passion and inspired me to start hiking volcanoes! Really keen in doing Tambora but I understand due to its less commercialised situation (which is awesome) its ot as convenient to get to and hike. Care to share the logistical details? Also did you have to machete through the vegetations or are there worn trails? On hikes like these
@zeeresa You are quite right; because of its relative isolation, reaching Tambora is not very easy. First you have to get to Sumbawa by ferry from Lombok or by air from Bali (or Jakarta of course) and by car reach the head of the trails after an exhausting ride on completely dilapidated roads; you then have a long, not difficult, ascent to the crater that may take a few days. If you have a 4-wheel drive car and a good guide, as we did, the latter can be done in 2 days. No machete needed!
@lecavalier101 To me a volcano that for almost two centuries has not had any major activity is dormant; obviously, as I mention in my commentary, there are abundant signs that Tambora is still connected to the Indonesian volcanic network and there is no doubt that one day, perhaps soon, the activity will resume in its full force. May I ask what is your project?
@lecavalier101 Did you check my video on Rinjani (Indonesia of course)? It is a very interesting volcano for it has a very large ancient crater complete with a beautiful lake and a very active new cone on one side of it (it certainly was when I was there, for the third time, in 2009).
I wish you would have been there to film it too! I Reckon it must have been just so gargantuan that it would have stunned the senses.
It may not be a VEI-7 again, but something certainly odd is going on under the surface to cause 22 Volcanoes in indonesia to increase in activety. Lets hope it's not "Pressure" causing that huh?
@david222444 I predicted that! Well, does not take much of a scientist to imagine that all that gas activity is the result of mounting pressure underneath.
So has anyone gone down to the bottom? :P Be interesting to see the fumarole activity close up. It's interesting that it's smoking, I wonder if that's has started up again lately. I notice one cone down there, maybe at some stage there was a little bit more activity again?
Yes, I know that somebody did go into the crater (I believe they went in by paragliding). The hike down, and even worse up, does not look that easy.
Many seemingly dormant volcanoes emit gases as a reminder that the pressure is still there and mounting; one day they will blow up again. I do not think however that Tambora is ready for that yet.
@brunvit Would be probably forming a small cone like Rinjani. Seems not have done that yet. My friend went down recently. He said he found a way down maybe next year will go down into it ehheheh. Some friends have tried to land on Batu Tara recently. And some went to the top of Krakatau in between eruptions and saw a lava lake at the top!!!
this was the largest volcano eruption recored besides for 1 other 1, cant remem name, but this was rated 7 (highest) in VEI, if memory serves yellowstone was 5-6
This volcano deserves alot more repsect than it is given.. 10 times more powerful exlosion only 70 years before Krakatoa!!! Still the eruption is hardly talked about in the media.
There's a number of stratovolcanoes but yeah haha, when Yellowstone goes, we all will too. Especially with population as out of control as it is now.. volcanic winter.. forget about it.
Just by accident I click to youtube about Tambora Volcano. For the last 4 years I am doing my research about the Tambora volcano. I made two visits for the last two years. Doing 4 different trails to document by video and photograph. Took me more then 45 days to get more than 5.000 photos and hours of video, for the last two years. The work to make a book to be finished next year, to comemorate its 4 days great eruptions in April 1815.

@Donhasman, thank you for watching my video; you did not comment however on its quality. I hope you liked it. About Krakatau, I was there three months ago. You can see my video of that trip (and many others of course)
@roflpwnize I would not worry too much about it. It may take 10 thousand years before Yellowstone wakes up in a rage. In the mean time enjoy the beautiful scenery.
@roflpwnize, in my commentary I clearly state that Tambora's explosion, in 1815, was the largest in modern times hence recorded. Yellowstone volcanic complex had at least three supereruptions between 2.1 million and 640,000 years ago. They of course were not recorded. There have been many similar events in eras gone by e.g. Lake Toba (Sumatra), La Garita (Colorado), Campi Flegrei (near Naples, Italy) and the list could go on.
In the island of Sumbawa there are two large towns; the closest to Tambora is Bima which is well connected by air to Bali/Jakarta; the other is Sumbawa Besar which is not too far from a very busy ferry terminal. Unfortunately, in both cases, to get at the Tambora's foothills there are several hours of riding on very dilapidated roads.
tambora wont have a vei7 eruption again for thousands of years. probably will just have alot of vei 23 and 4's that will slowly fill in the caldera. Next big one will come from somwhere unexpected thats been dormant for a long long time.
That's mostly true yes, i'll have to agree with you on that. However, the issue that arrises is Tambora's resting spot is directly over a hotspot. It could blow up violently again for it's next eruption. However, i do agree that the next big one on Tambora isn't for a while. When it does come though... people of Indonesia are screwed.
My guess on the next NON-VEI 8 will be Krakatoa or as you say, somewhere no one ever expects it. Baeku mountain? Crater Lake? Santa Maria? even Novarupta...
Getting to Sumbawa is not very difficult either by air from Bali or by ferry from Lombok. Getting to the head of the trail also can be relatively easily done by local buses. Getting to the "base camp" at about 1,400 meters is instead more difficult as a good 4wheel drive vehicle is required, unless you are prepared to walk up the gentle but long slopes.

@brunvit Not yet, it sounds amazing! I personally love volcanoes (not when they erupt, of course!) and I will watch your video as soon as I can.

Tambora was one of the 5 VEI 7s in the past 1000 years. La Garita was the biggest, so they say. 5,000 cubic KM, compared to Tambora's 100

@brunvit we had to make a model volcano and erupt it, while creating some kind of presentation of almost all of its information
on the other hand, i have checked many sites and i have found all but one say it is still active
