Reminds of that scene in Wayne's World where Wayne's checking out that strat and there's a sign that says "No Stairway to Heaven". For my generation, it'd say "1. No Smells Like Teen Spirit 2. No Today 3. No Under The Bridge".
Ben, you're so adorable. I saw you live in michigan like 4 years ago. Shit was so cash. I'm glad you're a pumpkins fan. Your insights on it are great.
fuck you and jimmy chamberlin. smashing pumpkins where good but not that good. that bald bitch needs to quit with all this they are done he's the only one left in the band. they are not the smashing pumkins anymore!
Interesting. I grew up in Greenville Texas as well.(mostly my 11-15 period of life, rather) It's funny how I get into music, and see some other artists come out of that area; God I hated and loved that town. Texas is by far better than Tennessee(where I'm at now) in my opinion though. Keep the music going, and definitely the Smashing Pumpkins love!
After the release of gish the pumpkins were bound to have fame when they released their next album. Billy new this. Under the pressure of the whole fame thing billy had always been know to have suicidal thoughts. So one day billy decided to write a little song called today. The songs about suicide.
While "ironic" is definitely the best word (especially in the case of "Today"), I've always described the Pumpkins' music as bittersweet. I have my run-ins with deep depression, and "Today" (as well as many, many other Pumpkins' songs) is a song that can almost be cathartic.
When I listen to the song and sing along (or at the least mouth the words), it can always make me smile. Even if I'm down, it makes me feel good about what I'm down about which ultimately helps pull me out.
the song really is about suicidal thought. billy wrote it when he was contemplating suicide. however everyone can interpret a song there own way but for what its worth the song is about suicidal thoughts
"i was just thinking about the song and if he was being ironic...or not you know, like, i couldn't tell if like, today was actually the worst day he was every having, you know?"
Alright way to take things at face value. At least he is delving deeper into the actual meaning of the song. You assume he's being an idiot. I'm glad you wasted minutes of you're life listening to that part over and over to quote him successfully.

First off, I was making a comment on how he is trying to sound profound by giving us his obviously ambiguous and on the spot interpretation of the song which just makes him look stupid and pretentious when the song is really not that difficult to understand in the first place. Anyone with an 8th grade education knows that this song is meant to be ironic. I never said that Ben Kweller was a bad song writer, in fact I like a lot of his music, but man is he dumb. And FYI: I listened to it twice.
Thats pretty cool since Billy has said he was in desperate/suicidal time while writing Today. Kudos to ben kweller for taking the time to get to know the song. Some of the other covers on the sp tribute cd weren't too inspired in my opinion.
wow I really liked ben kweller, but now I love him so much more.. yeah SP rocked so hard. Siamese Dream was like the only cd I had playing in my panasonic portable....that is until I got pisces iscariot ^^
@cooliohoolio92 not exactly theres other bands that are more hard core. but dont get me wrong i like them but theres some things that i dont like the way they sing its almost like if hes whining

Billy was being ironic. He said so on VH1 storytellers. Ben Kweller rocks, but the above poster seems to believe that it was obvious. HTH.
