La de años que hice cola en el Palau de la música Catalana pa ver a este genio del jazz y su no menos big band que bién sonaban mientras bromeaban entre ellos oh que tiempos -Victor Garcia-Acin(Compositor) 1/11/2011
@HuxxNL Congratulations. The Pinnacle of your literary career in cyberspace. Your mom and dad must be real proud of you. Please, for the sake of humanity. . quit your job now (if you have one) and become a writer. The world needs more geniuses like you.
@got2bme619 Ridiculous bass???????? Are you a double bass player????? Do you think anybody can impress Count Basie that way??Cleveland Eaton is the funkiest double bass player on earth! He is also a master on electric bass.He has a unique style. I recommend you to listen to his work !
@sandersgus I think he was saying ridiculous in the sense that it is played masterfully...
I myself am a trombone player, and everytime I play something with a plunger I think I'm good. Then I listen to this to compare myself, and feel awful about my playing. Booty is timeless!!
I love looking at these vids, because I get to put them with stories Cleve and his wife tell me. As a bass player I am extremely lucky to have him around. His grandson is a close friend of mine before I even knew who his granddad was .My friend has gotten all but cursed at for not telling a professional jazz bassist who his granddad was until last day of class. Also to think that I have played on this bass that was in the video. it is like WOW. Too much to put in words
i born in 1987 and i grew up in spain listening jazz and i love his work with frank sinatra in 1966.i have to say that is a shame i couldnt meet such greats musicians. to day there are only a few that can do what they did in those times.
I went to see Basie every night when he was in Bournemouth in 1957 and was lucky enough to meet him . He was a gentle man and it amazed me (at the age of 16) how his simple style just rocked.
I loved reading these posts! My brother sent this to me. Booty Wood is my dad. He passed in 1987, so I havent seen him in 22 years. Thank you 2 whoever ppsted this. Never thought that I would get to see him perform again. Song was called Booty's Blues because of his solo performance & plunger style, Basie & Ellington agreed that he was one of the best. I remember hanging out with the band and Basie when i was a child. Saw on the posts that Cleve was ill, i remember him, God b with him!
@Alice021705 We all remember and love All these greats! Hope all is well with you! We all have so much respect for your family and the rest of the jazz and blues families!~rock on!
I never get tired of hearing this. I think the best thing about Count Basie is the fact that as the bandleader, he has always been content to let his players be the stars.
It really hurts me to read that, 95% of the artists I just heard from or always admired already passed away.
I am 19 and just started listening to MUSIC since a year ago, so it's very hard to find someone from my age who doesn't refer 'smooth turntable crap' as jazz... currently still haven't found one.
I'm 16 and loving the jazz, and have quite a few friends who do the same. i've played with several jazz groups and it is some of the most fun I have. The Count was a one-off and can never be replaced
im 19, been listening to jazz since I was 9..so 10 years. You wont find many of us, mostly there are the metal, punk, hip hop, pop kids out there that are just posers. Do you play an instrument? because if not thats great that people our age is listening to this music simply because its great. Its hard to find people that dig this, mostly go to college music departments or jazz clubs if you are in new york, la, boston...etc.
19 years old myself, have played violin since I was 2, mostly classical but when I reached my teens, I started getting really into Gypsy jazz in the style of Reinhardt & Grapelli, of the Quintette Hot Club Du France. That amazes most people, as they don't usually associate the violin with jazz, even today. Does that count?
Really?! Which one? I have Basie Live at Birdland. On this particular Carnegie clip, the intro is the exact same intro they play for Segue in C, and the finale is the melody to Good Times Blues. ???
It's a live recording I bought a long time ago on vinyl. It's called "On The Road" (what a title...), July 12, 1979, live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, on Pablo Records.
Of course it would not be the first tune in history that has been recorded with several titles.
It's not dead, we just hate sharing good shit!! Quietly, enjoying what we like, bringing out the 'goodie' bag occasionally and teasingly. This kind of music is never to be thrown around lightly, it's pure Gold to some.
exactly...and think if it were mainstream. most of my generation couldn't appreciate it anyways and would probably butcher and make it sound like pop , just like they do everything else. lol
They're fooling around, he's pretending to be angry, like they're getting in the way of each other, when in fact they couldn't possibly be a better duo :)
I had the incredible opportunity to spend a day with Basie and what a wonderful guy he was. Nobody in the business had a bad word to say about him. "A beautiful human being!" was most oft said by those who knew him. He's still missed, though his "ghost band" carries on and does it well under Bill Hughes.
I'm just reading about Count Basie playing as Malcolm X was Lindy Hopping, sounds surreal but it's true. Wow this video shows how few notes can mean so much, just razor sharp playing, spectacular!
Smooth, very smooth. Vintage Basie with an excellent string bass. Booty Wood actually used to come in and give us pointers in the '70s at Dunbar High School in Dayton, OH. Good memories--great teaching! Simply marvelous jazz.
Cleve plays every Sunday at the Open Door Cafe' in Crestline Park, B'Ham form 11:00 to 2:00 and again on Wed. night at a jazz fest at 9- same place! Free
You shot Cleveland Eaton?! You're a terrible human being for murdering somebody. Not really. It's always cool having stories about/with great players.
this is so surreal to me. I get to see cleave play every week for free at a bar about half an hour from my house in b'ham. To see him on the same stage is basie is just really humbling. He is a living legend.
What (who) is missing is Freddie Green on guitar. This is the concert that George Benson was on too. Yeah, Cleve is a monster. Gregg Fields looks like he's 12 years old!
