john and the wolf had many songs that should have been hits i guess john didnt kiss enough ass or was happy enough in his own skin he didnt need the big hits the wolf and john are the best and this song is fantastic
Sounds great! That old cat can still belt one out. This reminds me a bit of the old Steppenwolf sound. (And now I know where Pearl Jam may have gotten its influence.)
Without a doubt...JOHN KAY is a master song writer and singer !! He has always been and will always be my favorite singer / songwriter.
The thing that gets me is that he is so underated....much like Edgar Allan Poe.....he too will not be recognized for his talents until he too is gone...sadly but true.
For those of us who do "get it".....John....we just want to let you know how much we care for you as a person and performer !! John Kay...Second to None !!!
Steppenwolf should have been a charter member of the Hall..one of the original bands that combined metal, fatih and freedom into Rock and Roll....Long Live John Kay and the 'wolf
@dullsvillain That's why their music is part of any soundtrack that tries to depict that era. They are one of the defining band of that age and their music is every bit as relevant now as it was forty years ago. Boycott Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, it's because of people like them that most music sucks ass nowadays.
if everyone watched this fantastic vid maybe everyone would have bq pits in there back yards sing songs too long live the firepits ! an bless everyone who has one theres nothing like a nice cozy fire in the backyard ! love steppenwolf have albulms still/
At fifty-two I lost my job and my wife over the course of about a year, and I thought the best times were behind me. The idealism of John Kay and his songs reminds me of what's really important and valuable in life; keeping your eyes and your heart open, working for peace and justice, and believing that the best is yet to come.
@allrightguy89 Hey some of history's greatest men if they'd died before the age of sixty would have been mere footnotes Franklin and Churchill come to mind. To his dying day Franklin didn't think any of his electrical experiments would ever have any practical use less than fifty years after his death many of his discoveries made the Industrial Age possible. Do what you're meant to do and let history be the judge.

That figures. So many movies dealing with that ime have used Steppenwolf in their soundtracks. They did a lot to define that era"s music but what they sang about is still very relevant. Considering some of who is in the Hall of Fame, I'd consider it somewhat of an honor NOT to be in it.
John, you have been in my heart since the first day I heard "Born to Be Wild", 40 years ago. I still crave to hear it, and still get goosebumps, but I to want to say that I immensly admire you today for all that you are doing, and sharing your thoughts in beautiful songs, and supporting not only mankind, but the beautiful animals that so many take for granted. It all goes hand in hand. Thank you so much. Please come to Allentown, PA again!
John Kay is my favorite singer ever, and steppenwolf my fav band forever... i feel their songs and always learn something with... it's like my medicin...
John Kay and Steppenwolf have sung the sound track of my life. From Born to be Wild, to Monster, he has lifted my spirit and inspired my heart. I shared his music with my sons and believe he has helped them become the fine men they are. Now, this song especially calls to me like a clarion, as I try to champion political progress and inspire my students to do likewise. Thank you John. I am forever in your debt! Keep Rockin till the early mornin!
WOW I totally love this song (first time to hear it) I also like "shackles and chains" (rare one) ........on the slow side , I think tenderness is great too !
almost all of Steppenwolf's music was from the heart. they were my first truely favorite rock band. They're still not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame neither are the Moody Blues, incredible.
This is just one example of the heart and soul that John Kay has expressed in most all his songs throughout his career. Though I don't know him personally he he trully one of my very best friends. Keep pouring out your heart John, though he is a rocker from time to time, he is a simple country boy at heart. Peace, "HeyCowBoyBob"(alias Bob Wallace)
Kay has one of the very few rock voices that has just gotten better and better with age. Usually it's the other way around. I loved the 60's and 70's stuff, but now (well I guess you can't call '96 "now") he still uses some of the same kinds of vocal ornamentation, only more so and with more finesse. One of the most underrated singers in pop/rock, I'd say. Thanks for posting.
I like Steppenwolf, but not numbers like this. After 1974 (Slow Flux) there has been made very few songs I think. The songs from 1967-1974 which have been played today contain a strong plastic-sound.
I have to disagree. In the 80's/90's The Wolf put out "Rise and Shine" and "Rock n' Roll Rebels". I saw them on tour at that time as I have always been a hardcore fan. Granted, the sound is somewhat different, but still true to the old school style. Check them out sometime. Not plastic at all IMO.
I saw John Kay and Steepenwolfe in 1969, in Amarillo Texas. The sad thing is that everyone I attended that concert with is dead with the exception of me.Keep trucking my brother.
It seems to me, his music and words are far too beautiful and thought provoking for the multitudes of people who don't want to think, they just want to be entertained mindlessly. This song is wonderful. Forty years and he is still staying true to himself.
Back in 68, 69,70 Steppenwolf was my band. 40 years later they still are, their music is as relevant today as ever, the Beatle were okay but they didn't speak to me like Steppenwolf, Creedance and Jefferson Airplane did.
John Kay has more talent and more depth than many who have made far more and been far more famous. Few have been truer to themselves and their music. There's much to admire in that.
Hey Lawdy Mama was kind of lame, but not really bad, I guess. I've always liked how his social conscience and consciousness showed up in his songs. I wish he'd had more recognition.
just great...just great

Lotta comments about the 'Wolf not being in the RRHF..or the Moody Blues, did you know they gotta pay to be considered to be inductees.?
About $12K..
If I were in a rock band I donl think I'd be too concerned about getting inducted either.
