datda may not hae "human " emotions but he expresses himself and his "feelings" in a android like way. this is broght to light in the spisode "brothers" when he tells his father Soong that he " can not" grive for him and his father says " you will... in your own way". i belive the tragity of data is that he wants human emotions instead of embraceing his own. but i also belive that in this way he is more human then he belived because like a humans, he wanted deeply what he did not have.
I think Data was more emotional, silly, and child-like than any of us could hope to be. Thanks to Brent Spinner (and the writers of TNG) who gave us such a multi-layered character.
Nice Tribute! best i've seen, would have been cool if you had included the part where he says godbye to captain Picard that is my favorite part of Nemesis :) 5/5
Well done. I think that it is obvious that Data does have emotions, but like Spock he is never overwhelmed by them, seldom shows them, and always tempers them with logic.
Unlike Spock, Data is incapable of emotion. He does not hide them, in fact he tries to imitate the proper look of emotions for appropriate situations... at least until the series ended and the first movie, "Generations", came out. He then received his emotion chip and kept it for the next 3 movies until his death.
It is obvious that his character was meant to be a parallel for the character of Spock in the original series, just remember they aren't the same.

Stemperifit, Modern neurology is finding that people who are totally cut off from their emotions by brain damage have difficulty making decisions. Like why would Data choose Starfleet instead of becoming a research scientist or a tribble rancher? He says he has no desires, but clearly he desires to be on the Enterprise, he desires to be loyal to Picard and the crew, he desires to be more human. You can't make these choices on logic alone, you need to have feelings.
A wonderful tribute to Data, my favorite character. It always touched me how the android who strove so hard to become human was the most human character of all.
Data is gorgeous, he makes my heart melt, and makes me laugh and cry, all at the same time. He is definitely the best Star Trek character.
However, I generally detest the TNG movies, the only one with a good plot was First Contact, and the good plot was the only thing good about it. I just don't like the idea of the "emotion chip", it doesn't seem the kind of compromise Data would make: fake emotions instead of humanity. But he was STILL great, so what am I complaining about? I love Data!
It is said Data is emotionless... It is said he just copied the behavior of humans. I don't think so. It was said he can't feel emotions, and this is why he thought he could't. I love the series and films, but I hate Nemesis. Data is stil alive for me too, not because he is fictional, not because I haven't seen the film, but because I know there are an alternate future where he lives his life. This is one of the beauties of the ST.
I had this great idea. Make a Next Generation video game. Like the GTA series. go anywhere on the ship, missions like bridge commander, you could go aorund the entire enterpirse, planet missions. the works. a man can dream. that would take so long and i doubt you could make it feel right. just thought of one mission you play as data and you have to run to engineneering to switch some isolinar chips, too many ideas. no programmingskills lol
I miss Data too. If you ever pay attention, Data was often the most human, and you could tell he felt emotion in a very subtle way...he just didn't notice it. If this wasn't true he would not have told Lal, his daughter, that he wished he could feel the love she felt. Isn't that a form emotion...longing sense???
I like this video. Very fitting. I cried at the end of Nemesis. I haven't been able to watch the film again. Why kill him off?! Why kill any of them off? Long live Data, and Brent Spiner!!!
He may have been "killed off" in a movie, but because he's a fictional character, that actually means nothing. He can live on as long as you like; that's the beauty, power and infinite potential of creation/fiction. If TV and movie writers are allowed to rewrite characters back into life whenever they whist, why can't you or I?
Don't tell me. I saw it only once! I didn't expect his killing, and I started crying in the cinema! Nemesi is the only Star Trek film that I bought (I have all the films and the series, so I had to buy it)and I didn't see at home:it's packed! Data is stil alive for me.
It is from TNG episode 70, "The Most Toys", after a supposed shuttle accident makes the crew believe Data is dead, when in fact he was captured by an artifact thief. Picard picks up a copy of Hamlet and recites that line.
I haven't seen any of the movies yet. I only recently gained an interest in the series. My dad's been a Trek fan forever and I pretty much grew up with TNG since it started a year before I was born. Anyway, Data is my favorite and I think it's sad that he ends up dying. I'm gonna have to watch some of these movies sometime and I'll be sure to have tissues ready if I watch Nemesis.
Woe that was cruel - why the hell did they kill him off?! Now they cannot ever make another TNG film - unless of course with another version of him - but 'this one' has evolved & we all love him, a new one would need to grow as he did, which on the other hand is a perfect way to reintroduce him at some point - unless of course, any new version somehow, did retain 'his' 'data' fully...
I bawled my eyes out when I watched Nemisis. I was so set against the idea of Data dying that I wrote a fanfiction about what REALLY happened at the end of Nemisis. I've made myself believe that just as the ship was exploding, Q intervened and whisked Data away because he still owes him a debt for saving his life.
they could always write that in to a new one, jsut depends if brent spiner would sign up. that a intruiging notion, data comes back with enough knowledge to build himself a wife and little data babies.
you have no soul. Laying downs one life for the benifit of others is not only the ultimate sacrifice, it is the ultimate show of love for the ones with whom you serve.
We, who were in the U.S. Army in "West" Germany (1988-91), used to receive VHS tapes of that new Star Trek: TNG. I used to brag that I came from the same great state (Texas) as Lt Cdr Data. Nnobody would believe that a Texan could pull it off!
