  • Another great video, Jason. I'd like to add just a couple of notes. The umlaut (we call it "trema" in Portuguese) has been suppressed, so now you spell cinquenta and not cinqüenta, although "aguentar" is an exception to the rule, and never had a trema.

Regarding the unstressed "de" phoneme, you do find people in Brazil who palatalize it, pronouncing for example "depois" as djeepois.

  • @KimCyunHi Thanks so much for those clarifications! abraços!

  • im sorry but i am very confused on the d before e. you said the e is stressed what do you mean?

  • Regarding words such as "cidade", if you go to southern states such as Paraná, Santa Catarina, or Rio Grande do Sul, you'll find that the pronounciation is exactly the same as it would be in the"cadê".

Bem, seus vídeos são ótimos! Passar conhecimento é sempre bom. Parabéns!

  • @scarbo1989

in some areas of those states only. In Porto Alegre, its cidadji (like in the rest of Brazil). In the west and in the Serra, is cidad"ê".

  • COngrats! I m argentinian (Spanish speaking) and i teach Portuguese and i was glad to find such a great pronunciation in Portuguese from an English speaking, as your language is so different from the language spoken in Brazil. Thanx for uploading your wonderful videos. Greetings from Buenos Aires

  • @marianmade Muito obrigado! Where do you teach Portuguese? I would love to BS AS some day!

  • @languagenow I teach Portuguese to private students, some of them in different enterprises here in BA. You re welcome to come to Buenos Aires and also learn Spanish here. You won t find it so hard with your excellent Portuguese, you have to take advantage of that! Best regards and keep on uploading and helping so many people with your tutorials!

  • @languagenow Help me learn english i can teach you portuguease YAYY haha

  • O número dez o senhor disse como "dêz", mas é como se fosse "déz. =)" E a combinação "SÇ" eu acho que não existe. Pelo menos não me vem nenhuma palavra com "SÇ" na cabeça agora.

Keep up with the good work. Congratulations!

  • Portuguese does have a phonetic alphabet. Perhaps the fit is not as good as it is in say Spanish or German, which have perfect phonetic systems. But regardless, Portuguese is STILL phonetic. A written language that is *not* phonetic, is for example Mandarin.

  • @YouStoleMyTube "A written language that is *not* phonetic, is for example Mandarin." English is another great example.

  • @yurismir1 No, English is phonetic. It uses an alphabet while Mandarin uses pictographs. Even though English's phonetic system is terrible and inconsistent, it's still phonetic.

  • @YouStoleMyTube I think phonemic might be the word we're looking for.

  • A grámatica da Lingua Portuguesa é muito complexa

  • Muito interessante saber que existem pessoas interessadas em aprender a língua portuguesa do brasil.

    Congratulations!

  • Congrats on your video!... I'm brazilian andIi watched it whole... so many things we pass by like: I didn't even think about the sound of "d" at the end of a word... that it may sound like "j" in "jeans"... I guess living the language makes you kind of dumb, I mean... I don't have to think to speak portuguese, it just comes out of my mouth. Its as easy as breathing.

  • This has really helped giving me an introduction to Brazilian Portuguese. I am studying Portuguese to finally see my best friend, Glauco, in Araraquara, Brazil and would love to be able to communicate with him the way he wants to express his thoughts. He has told me that Portuguese is more "expressive" than English. This is a difficult language to learn, but you make it seem so easy. Thank you so much for helping.

  • I am watching your videos and they are very helpful. Thank you.

  • Thanks for this as I'm living in Brazil and learning Portuguese. This is insight that I feel only a non-native Portuguese speaker would have. Also, being a Welshman, I must point out that Gwen is a Welsh name and not English as you mentioned. But thanks again!!

  • Do you have a video explaining masculine and feminine parts of the language?

  • Olá, i juz wanna thank u for helping pple in learning portuguese. your videos are so well done with such a gentle approach and it's marvellous for learners. obrigada professor

  • You will get a shit load of uploads leading up to the 2014 world cup!

    Thats why im here!

  • Congratulations Professor Jason, great video. I'm from Rio and it's very hard to find language teaching videos like this one on youtube.

I'd like to correct a small pronounce mistake on the word "café", you pronounced the letter "e" as a closed vowel.

    Great job!!!!

PS: When you were talking about the "G" sound right before you said:

    GAROTO

    GOSTOSO

I lol, I know this wasn't on purpose but you said HOT BOY ^^

  • Very good explanation!!!

  • Olá sou brasileiro! voce esta 100 correto ^^

voce ja vei aqui no brasil alguma vez?

    rio de janeiro,sao paulo outros?

Muito bom o video. Fique com deus Bye

  • Já sim, conheci SP e o Rio, muito legal teu país! thanks!

  • very good class... but also a very strong foreing accent in portuguese...

Expecially... in case of number TEN = DEZ. We pronunciate "DÉZ" not DÊZ... like you said...

    Congratulate though...

  • great video - clears up a lot of my confusion.

  • Thanks so much for this lesson a great way to start the language, it's so important when we are learning a new language not to assume the way words should be pronounced and get it right from the beginning, great video and very well explained it shows your high skills as a teacher, Thanks so much!

  • Hey Chile, glad you liked the material and methodology, and thanks for the compliment, sorte com esta língua!

  • WOW! This is quite possibly the best free learning video I have found on the internet... for any language, and trust me, I've attempted to learn many. Very, very well made. Clear, easy to understand, yet to the point, and rapid. You must be a teacher. Amazing video.

  • muito obrigado pelo seu comentário!!

  • English, French, Portuguese and Spanish languages are the coolest in the world. \o/

  • mm to make it easier you might add that "di" is always pronounced -ge- and "de" is only pronounced -ge- when its a the end of a word the same goes for "ti" "te" accordingly

  • Thanks for this. Currently teaching myself Brazilian Portuguese. The pronunciation is much harder than Spanish (although it's easier than French). Your videos help clear things up!

  • Good video

  • I'd like to learn moe about how to talk to women in Brazilian Portuguese!

  • i start school tomorrow and im taking portuguese and this video rocks :)

  • hello teacher, permita-me dizer, a sua pronúncia da palavra 'dez' não está legal.

Está assim: "dêz", tem que abrir mais o som do "e"

    bye bye

  • D sounds the same as every vowell, the sounds like dji for ex is regarding every region of the country.... you did it great. congrats..

  • Thank you. I found this so useful.

    Just in case.

  • Certo, Julinha!

  • I'm from the north of Paraná :)

  • and i can not believe you'll help me learn portuguese. god bless you.

    Obrigado!

  • Found your videos yesterday, watched a various of them already, and they are really useful to get familiar with the pronunciation. Thanks! (I know only Spanish and just began to try to learn some Portuguese for a imminent (mostly business) trip there)

  • hello, if learn portuguese, if you are interested we can chat some times..contact me everybody

  • Professor,

Your videos are excellent. Do you teach Portuguese at a university? If so, where? I would love to take a Portuguese course with you.

  • There is a little mistake in the letter G:

In the text: "G BEFORE UE OR EI... ", has to say "G BEFORE UE OR UI..."

No sé si lo escribí bien en inglés, pero para mí, como el profesor, mi fuerte es el español. :-)

  • I need the part 2 uhuhuhu

  • I can´t find the Part 2. Is it exist?

  • I am also waiting for the part 2~~ hope that it will be released soon... prof jason is really great, i learn a lot from his video...

  • Thank you so much!I liked the lesson a lot and it really helps!

    I'll go watching further!

    THANKS!

    Alexandra

  • do you teach spanish AND portuguese and at what university?

  • thanks a bunch!!!

  • Great lesson... great pronounciation! :)

The word "ciúmes" is a "corruptela" of the word "ciúme"... I mean, the correct one is "ciúme" but many people say "ciúmes" in a kind of wrong way... the same happens with "saudade" (correct) and "saudades" (wrong).

  • Amigo Marcio, quanto tempo? I thought you would be among the first to comment! Thanks! I had notices that "ciúmes" was not in my Aurélio... but I figured that most people use the plural form, even if it is incorrect. Let me know if you have any suggestions for my pronunciation, OK? Até! Jason

  • É... quanto tempo, né? :)You pronounciation is great.. sounds like people from São Paulo. :)

I´m curious about how you will pronounce the "LH" hehe

    Welcome back!
