One sauna accident is far less horrible, than a country where some states allow death penalties or millions of people carrying guns. I would be much more worried in such environment, than in Finland.

100-120C temperature in a sauna is just fine for a few minutes of relaxation but not for 6+ minutes, especially after multiple consecutive sauna sessions which this contest had.
Wow, no wonder why yanks are so stupid :) 110 degrees celsisus is really nothing.. you guys are just too pussy to even think about temperatures like that. :) Finland for ever !

I dont get it why people cry about this? i go to the sauna every week at the same warmth but think about the people who die in the car races? this guy is 100% troll =)) or hes totally retarded
is isn´t dumb.but those two people was they did not follow the rules and they get paid for it. and in finland everybody in have sauna in they house,or commune sauna..and normal temperature is something beetween 75-120 celsius.
American guy is saying that some contest is stupid? look at your self ===DDD you guys dont even know where some countries are so maybe you should think what and who is stupid here.
When air is heated to 110C it doesn't mean it will roast human. Pork needs at least 115C which is close but still. it wouldn't cook. The reason the russian guy died was that he used fat to lube himself before competition which got absorbed to his skin and actually allowed the skin to cook deeper (not just burning outermost layer).
So now there has been 2 casualties in sauna championships over 11 years. How many has there been in formulas, football, boxing, etc etc within these 11 years?
The reason why you're getting this 'stupid american' spam is because you're overreacting to the temperature. The difference is that the contenders had already been twise in a sauna that day and they were in there far too long. Mind over matter is what happened.
You're right about the fact that its not smart. But the dumbs in this situation are the contestants who dont know when tho stop. Someone actually dying there wasn't something they expected. I'm curiously waiting for the autopsy results.
if i go to a sauna it has to be over 80 C (176 F)... below that is too cold to throw more löyly (water to the stones). finnish sauna is at it's best with friends, cold beer and lake to go swimming to.
@0mistaja humidity also affects on the comfortable feeling a lot as you know. So as I suppose you have two tipes of saunas: first one is like sauna with an electrical furnace. and the second type is the private saunas in Finland(fuel is wood). And I suspect that first type has higher temperature and lower humidity (100 C 5-10 %) and the second one is pretty much similar with russian "banya" by microclimate(65-80 C and 35-50% of relative humidity)
Have you ever been in a real sauna? I doubt that. It's not dangerous for you life to be in a 110 celcius degree sauna. What made them get killed was that they had break the rules and had eaten pain killer pills to cope with the warmth. That's what got them to bad shape. This is a good example of a guy talking about something he hasn't got any own experience.
"Where is the common sense." I agree with you, but the 230 F temperature is not the bad part, but the fact that they threw 1 L of water every minute on the stones. That is what makes the humidity go up which makes you burn. In a normal sauna that all the Finnish people go to, it is 200-230 F but we add very little or no water on the hot rocks. Btw I liked your video.
Actually they didn't have doctors permissions and they where using painkillers.. So do the math. Otherwise being in sauna is healthy and u should go to one too before you give your opinions to the public.
Actually they didn't have doctors permissions and they where using painkillers.. So do the math. Otherwise being in sauna is healthy and u should go to one too before you give your opinions to the public.
i really dont see the big number about saunas? 110c isnt rly that special for finnish saunas... what i heard out from my parents i was 2yrs old when i went to sauna first time and even then heat was propably like 80-90 decrees and hottest ive been in upto 130 decrees. There is lots and lots of stupid contest's spanish has bullrun american has eating contest's and i can bet that there is fatal accidents in those competitions aswell.
Hey, what do you expect? Those are the guys who invented Russian roulette. Slavic people are typically so sick of their boring lives, they have nothing better to do than get drunk or do massively insane shit.
@logik316 Russians and Finish people have nothing to do with each other. Also Russian roulet is not Russian pecause it whas invented there. It's called Russian roulette pecause it whas invented by an American novelist 1937 and in that novel there whas a russian soldier that played it.
Stupid?you never heard of the US eating competitions ? 110 Celsius is insane? When I was 6-7 I went in a sauna at 120 Celsius .And the Russian guy was ready to win even if it meant to die because he got beaten every year by the Finn and was 65
110 celcius is a normal temperature to go to sauna in Finland. When you go to sauna, it is normally about 60 or 80 celcius, and you heat it until it reaches like 100 or 110 celsius, and when it does, you stay there for like couple of minutes and after that you get out.
I dont about the facts of how much temperature you have in an American sauna? But it is nothing unusual in Finland. This competition is offcourse dumb, but hey, so are eating contests too!
And what about car etc sports? At least what I know of, no spectators have been hurt in Sauna competitions. Unlike in motor sports etc...never mind about the competitors.
There is a very good short documentary on Timo Kaukonen, Finnish sauna and the sauna contest directed by Thomas Hilland, named Sweat. It can be seen on Vimeo website. I warmly recommend! Let me add that normally any clothing is not worn in sauna.
You can call that allso determination, spirit of winterwar or sisu, we can loose in hockey, football, javelin throwing or in every single sports, but theres one goddamn contest we wont loose, espicially for Russians, no matter what it takes. Believe me we have lots of people who thinks this way.
@dikiluu But this time Russian won. The Russian man was 72 year old, the Finnish guy is 40 year old. Russian man won because he was longer in the sauna than Finnish guy. Finnish guy tried to get out of the sauna and surrend, but he couldn't get up, so they pulled him off from the sauna. Russian man died, and took hes win with him.
There is a very good short documentary on Timo Kaukonen, Finnish sauna and sauna contests on vimeo website called Sweat. Let me remind that normally people don't wear swimming suits or any kind of clothing at all in sauna.
Internet discussions tend to be full of three kinds people: 1. Wimps who distribute disinformation; 2. Moralists who distribute scale and perspective errors; 3. Yobs who distribute their own toughness. Some people even manage to be all three simultaneously. I've got to say that people are permitted to die whenever, even during some competition.
@pptthik I hate to buck the trend Mr. Pptthik, but that is one of the most sagacious and penetrating analysis's I've ever read in a Youtube comment area.
WE'RE FINNISH WE ARE BUILT FOR SAUNA RUSSIANS ARENT... BTW THERE'S NEVER EVER BEEN AN AMERICAN CONTESTANT!!! but ye its a little bit insane but i personally LOOOOOVE sauna
You may be the dummest man to judge this like that. You don't seem understand a lot about sauna. The heat of +110 celsius is actually quite tolerable for a great percentage of Finns, but most wouldn'tdump water on the rocks at that temperature.
Anyway, what went wrong?
Well, it's pretty much like pptthik said. The temperature change made the competition a pain tolerance test instead of a good old sauna-bathing endurance test.
110 degrees C is a normal temperature for Finnish sauna. Sauna contests are quite common. Sauna deaths are also quite common but they don't normally occur at sauna contests. People who are too drunk or have heart diseases sometimes die in sauna. Dying in sauna is not peculiar as many Finns are also born in saunas. All Finns have grown in a keen realtionship with sauna, so it's fair to say that sauna is part of every Finn and every Finn is part of sauna.
@thepenrev - I think that what killed the poor Russian was the contest organizers' miscalculation as they rose the temperature from last year on in order to shorten the competition heats. So the competition changed from a fairly normal endurance test into a pain-tolerance test. They might not have taken into account that the all hardest, best trained and motivated indiviuals, could burn to death. But let me put this in a perspective: Motor sports kill every year both drivers and spectators.
@thepenrev Heinola town has already announced that they quit with this competition but it might continue in Tuuri, Bothnia. Finnish media has managed to point out what actually happened: 6:40 the judges notice Ladyzhensky go bland and decide to halt the final; 6:50 the sauna door is opened and the two reamaining finalists are asked to come out; 6:55 Kaukonen reacts and tries to rise but fails, Ladyzhensky does not react at all; 7:00 both are dragged out. Some minutes later Ladyzhensky dies.
@mull529 Combined information off several sources. I've been interested in the slight contradictions between different reports. It seems like this is close to what happened. Still, several open questions remain, like: Did Ladyzhensky use some kind of dope? Did he use some kind of forbidden grease or oil that behaved differently from what he had expected? What is the exact state of Kaukonen now? See, if Ladyzhensky used some kind of a forbidden method, Kaukonen should be declared champion.
@pptthik 110 degrees ain't an normal temperature in finnish saunas, usually it's between 80-90 and if it sometimes really is 110 u don't throw water every 30 secends.
well im no rocket scientist but as far as i know waters boiling point is 212*,and the human body is 70%ish water.......so ya.....i understand the tradition of saunas, and their health benifits, but like any good thing too much is bad,(i know this is a bad joke) but i wonder how pruney lookin these guys were when they were removed from the sauna
The contest itself is not stupid, it was the ppl who participated who got carried away trying to beat each other out AT ALL COSTS- that you can call "stupid".
The sauna culture is a huge part of Finland & Russia, and having sauna competitions is a very natural thing for them. Add to that a fierce sense of masculinity and a concept called "sisu"- the determination to keep going despite difficulties, and this time, it spelled a recipe for disaster.
People do so much stupid things and no one has a problem with it until a accident hapends. If anyone wants to take part in this strange contest thats his choice, we should respect it.
You can't cook breakfast at 110C sauna. Same reason why you can be naked outside in -20C in winter for a while, but +1C water feels extremely cold.
You people have to understand that a sauna at 110C is not the same as if you went swimming in boiling water (obviously). Here in Finland, temperatures up to 140C are not extraordinary.
Now I do understand that sauna competitions are not safe, because stubborn people will do anything to win.
@vaahtobileet Bullshit. 140c IS extraordinary in Finland. Proper way to heat up sauna is somewhere between 80-90c and that is pretty hot once the steam comes to play.
The point is to enjoy the warmnes of sauna not to cook yourself to death like they did in that contest.
This guy in the video has o good point. It whas fucking stupid and that's it. They had severe purns to the skin and where propaply using painkillers to stay as long as possiple in leathal conditions. Just plain stupid.
I agree with you now. 140C isn't normal, but it's certainly not unheard of. What really killed the russian was the insane amount of water added at a constant pace.
I have to agree with you rev. There is a lot of ''stupid'' that flows around this world , and at the time it just happened to have temporarily stopped in Finland. People may not understand this kind of game but common sense( in theory ) would tell you not to do something of this nature.
@gammooo What?? Yes, it IS "that much"! Dude, you can cook your breakfast in that temperature! Do you even know how hot 110C is?? It's hotter than boiling water! Put your hand in a pot of boiling water for ten minutes and then tell us that it is not all that much:-D
OMG this was dumber than the water drinking contest in 2007 on a radio show. The one where the Mom went home and died from water intoxication. The family sued the station and won 16 million. You know those lil kids would rather give the money back and have their Mom back.

I can be in a 110c sauna, but i don't enjoy it. Wouln't throw ANY water though..
I prefer about 80c or even a bit colder.

Peeps you can quit at 0:05 "This is one of the dumbest competitions I have ever seen.. or heard about.. Let's put it that way, HEARD ABOUT" /the end
Great video but don't judge what you don't understand.

I think it's pretty ignorant to blatantly call things for dumb.

People in China do way crazier shit so this is surprising but the contestants volunteer to do it there not forced to.
smileddc 1 year ago
110 degrees C is a normal temperature for Finnish sauna. Sauna contests are quite common. Sauna deaths are also quite common but they don't normally occur at sauna contests. People who are too drunk or have heart diseases sometimes die in sauna. Dying in sauna is not peculiar as many Finns are also born in saunas. All Finns have grown in a keen realtionship with sauna, so it's fair to say that sauna is part of every Finn and every Finn is part of sauna.

@pptthik wow...thanks for the info.....:)
thepenrev 1 year ago
@thepenrev - I think that what killed the poor Russian was the contest organizers' miscalculation as they rose the temperature from last year on in order to shorten the competition heats. So the competition changed from a fairly normal endurance test into a pain-tolerance test. They might not have taken into account that the all hardest, best trained and motivated indiviuals, could burn to death. But let me put this in a perspective: Motor sports kill every year both drivers and spectators.
pptthik 1 year ago 7
@pptthik maybe after this they will take the heat back down.........
thepenrev 1 year ago
@thepenrev Heinola town has already announced that they quit with this competition but it might continue in Tuuri, Bothnia. Finnish media has managed to point out what actually happened: 6:40 the judges notice Ladyzhensky go bland and decide to halt the final; 6:50 the sauna door is opened and the two reamaining finalists are asked to come out; 6:55 Kaukonen reacts and tries to rise but fails, Ladyzhensky does not react at all; 7:00 both are dragged out. Some minutes later Ladyzhensky dies.

@pptthik Please, where did you find the times of this event?
mull529 1 year ago

Jarizul 1 year ago
@Jarizul Normal is everything between 70 and 140 C. Most common is between 80 and 90 C. Still, many people do not enjoy the bath in less than 100 C.

@pptthik lovely, anyway sitting in a room at 110 degrees C is fucking retarded.

This is like a contest of jumping off of a bridge to see who can be first to get his feet wet.
Man is the only creature smart enough to build the Empire State Building and at the same time the dumbest to jump off of it.
The6000Sabre 1 year ago
If this is stupid then so is bullriding.

It's not like your skin heats to the same temperature as the air. The thermometer might show 100C but your skin is barely 40C.
vaahtobileet 1 year ago
People do so much stupid things and no one has a problem with it until a accident hapends. If anyone wants to take part in this strange contest thats his choice, we should respect it.
kirft 1 year ago
You can't cook breakfast at 110C sauna. Same reason why you can be naked outside in -20C in winter for a while, but +1C water feels extremely cold.
You people have to understand that a sauna at 110C is not the same as if you went swimming in boiling water (obviously). Here in Finland, temperatures up to 140C are not extraordinary.
Now I do understand that sauna competitions are not safe, because stubborn people will do anything to win.
Proper "saunominen" even has health benefits.
vaahtobileet 1 year ago 22
@vaahtobileet Bullshit. 140c IS extraordinary in Finland. Proper way to heat up sauna is somewhere between 80-90c and that is pretty hot once the steam comes to play.
The point is to enjoy the warmnes of sauna not to cook yourself to death like they did in that contest.
This guy in the video has o good point. It whas fucking stupid and that's it. They had severe purns to the skin and where propaply using painkillers to stay as long as possiple in leathal conditions. Just plain stupid.
Erholts 1 year ago
@Erholts
I agree with you now. 140C isn't normal, but it's certainly not unheard of. What really killed the russian was the insane amount of water added at a constant pace.
vaahtobileet 1 year ago
I have to agree with you rev. There is a lot of ''stupid'' that flows around this world , and at the time it just happened to have temporarily stopped in Finland. People may not understand this kind of game but common sense( in theory ) would tell you not to do something of this nature.
LRTummo 1 year ago
110C is not that much, its just the constant pouring of water thats making it so bad
gammooo 1 year ago
@gammooo What?? Yes, it IS "that much"! Dude, you can cook your breakfast in that temperature! Do you even know how hot 110C is?? It's hotter than boiling water! Put your hand in a pot of boiling water for ten minutes and then tell us that it is not all that much:-D

OMG this was dumber than the water drinking contest in 2007 on a radio show. The one where the Mom went home and died from water intoxication. The family sued the station and won 16 million. You know those lil kids would rather give the money back and have their Mom back.
