what type of engine comes stock in the older bugs?

ive heard alot of talk about rotary engines being used...

if thats the case...i have a turbo 2 rotor from an older RX7.

or would that be blasphemous to put in a bug? i can go down the road and pick up a bug or two right now....that would be a cool swap. i also have an old 4WD 2.5 subaru legacy but that would be an expensive project compared to the mazda swap. i would use some badass VW engine but im trying to ball on a budget...
