@TheCro4 1. Delete your .minecraft folder. (Windows: Go to start (white search bar) and type in %appdata%) (Mac: Open the finder and go to library then application support) You should see .minecraft or a minecraft folder back up your saves by going to the saves folder in your minecraft folder and copy and paste (or cut) in another folder. Then just simply delete the minecraft folder and after open up minecraft and press force update. Then you can paste your worlds back! Hope this helps

@MrAirnesse yes it does just take the files out you want to save (Saves, TexturePacks, And ScreenShots) dlete the .Minecraft folder than if you did it correctly minecraft should generate new files. now put the Saves, TexturePacks And ScreenShots back into your .Minecraft folder and your done :)
