I fell in love with this song when i heard it I love early 1900's french music, I'm a 17 year old skinhead girl with 38 piercings and tattoo's and I get the piss taken out of me for my music style!!
Yet this is one of my favorite songs, sorry that I have amazing taste in music!!
@f00kingalah Ride on!!! big respect goin out to ya from England! Keep the peace and that!!!! all those ppl who slate your music taste would have liked this music if they grew up at the time... they just bein ignorant plus pack mentality! U will grow strong and they will all of a sudden fall down when they are alone and dont have their mates to hold them up ;)
Makes me really sad that 'love' songs these days don't really express love. They express a girl having a nice arse or a nice rack, not a BEAUTIFUL girl with a pretty face and personality. Girls are just seen as SEXY and HOT these days.. Never beautiful.
Not many people are aware that during WW11 Maurice was in Paris doing a little entertaining . Most weeks he would drop into 4, Place de la Madelaine Paris which on the surface was a music publisher, Durand & Co . However, in the upstairs loft there was a long wave antenna over 18 feet long ,and this could be whipped up and down very quickly in order to transmit information over the water to Albion where the Lion awaited. Maurice was awarded decorations by both Countries. .jannarta.
Love the song and the performer. I learned this song when I was a young piano player. "Birds in the trees seem to twitter, 'Louise.' So they could Twitter back then, huh?
haha.. i'm studying cinema studies now and i'm doing an essay on The Merry Widow and I totally enjoy Chevalier's performance.. also on Love Parade and One Hour With You... so i decided to learn more about him and guess what? my name is Louise. WHAT A COINKIDINK..
This is my grandpa!! He is sooo great!! I never got to meet him cause he died before I was born, but my mom said his main line was "Many a man has fallen in love with a girl in a light so dim he would not have chosen a suit by it." I dunno what it means..but oh well.
My grandad was a POW during WWII , captured at St Valerey-en-caux or should I say that surrendered at St Valery-en-caux who escaped en route to the POW camp and his story has yet to be told although he relunctantly divluged part of it to the local press in the 1950's He named my mum after the popular Maurice Chevalier song because of his close relationship with the French Resistance who helped him escape.
OMG...we just returned from France & went to St Valery...the WWII stuff was so incredibly moving...I cried for 3 days after! The French in this area (Normandy) LOVE Americans! Is your Grandad still alive?
No, unfortunately my Grandad died a few years ago. My Grandad was born & bred in the North east of Scotland as are myself & the rest of my family. It was quite funny to hear him singing the beautiful song with his scottish lilt. It was touching though.
A coincidence about the Marx Bros and this song -- "Louise" is used in the show A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine. The show is one-half tribute to 1930s movie musicals and songwriters, and one-half a show in the style of the Marx Bros.
M y mistake on previous posting regarding the MARX BROS. and the Chevalier tune associated with it--the song was, "You Brought a New kind of Love To Me.." --the scene is in their great movie MONKEY BUSINESS..
Another wonderful song from M. Chevalier was Thank Heaven for Little Girls...although these days I don't think it would be so well received! My, how times change.
Every time I hear this I think of the Marx Brothers trying to get off that Steamer and passed Customs..each one making believe they were Chevalier--with a scratchy vinyl record playing behind them.
This song just kind of makes me cry); Its very beautiful and Romantic(;i always liked the early days i wish i could go back in time so much.anyone have any ideas how i might be able to do that(smiles)?
IMy grandma could not stop talking about this song, and now that i was able to find it, she is soo trhilled. seeing this little old ladyu sing "Louise" just like it was yesterday(1929) is like seeing a flashback lol. my grandma Louise rocks
An ex girlfriend used to sing this to me, "Every little breeze seems to whisper LOUIE. I didn't know where the song came from. Brings back memories, thanks for posting this song.
RR, Thank you for yet another delightful song with Mr. Charme, Maurice. I always loved this song with its great lyrics. Louise must have really been a BABE to have had such a great song written for her!
Actually, it's something of a mystery what happened to the actress Sylvia Beecher--who played the character Louise in "Innocents of Paris". It was her second and final film role (per the iMDB).
No Bio at TCM--none in Halliwell's "Filmgoer's Companion".
Google Images brings up three photos of her...a BABE indeed--very striking, fine-featured brunette. Maybe Maurice scared her away? ;)
Boy those guys in the French Resistance were really brave.
