I started playing guitar because of them. Recently I wrote and recorded an original song. If you want to hear how Led Zeppelin-inspired music sounds 2011 style click on wisztrock. I think you'll like it.
I always feel pumped when I hear The Song Remains the Same. One of my favorites. Loved that it was one of the few songs that had electric 12 string other than Tangerine, Stairway to Heaven, and any other subsequent songs he used 12 string for. Has anyone ever wondered how heavy that guitar probably is?
although not my favorite band, Led Zeppelin were a landmark in rock history, and made the turniing point for the heavy bands in the future. masterly instrument skills, beautiful voice, stage presence, indeed a great band of the 70's. keep listening LZ frequently since 1971 when I was 10 years old
For whatever can said about the messiness of Page's onstage execution of the riffs, I am still left marveling at the design and suspense of the arrangement. By far, one rock's greatest anthems.

Plant has moved on. I'm sure most of you wouldn't want to be doing what you were doing 31 years ago. And re. the "twangy bass", it didn't sound twangy to the audience; perhaps it's just that bass frequencies don't get absorbed by the crowd and travel further so a mix needs to have the higher frequencies notched up little to balace this effect; it depends where your recording was sourced - from the foldback mix or from the main output. Anyway this is still an awesome song.
@102ledzepfan Your not getting the bass as it sounded there. The effect of the soundboard recording is killing the lows because they were so substantial on the site. It was corrected on the live DVD somewhat
Of course its still a good show, just not by far as good to me as the other. Pages guitar sounds the way it does here because its a multi generational soundboard copy, not because of Page himself. I still prefer the 8/4 performance to this one either way. i guess i'm anyone with anykind of ears and hearts (-_o)
This is the start of the 8/11/79 show. This show is not as good as the 8/4/79 show. Its hard to tell which show is which visualy because they wore the same clothes for both concerts. Pages guitar sound sounds very muddy here, as would be expected for all content from the same concert posted by black diamond. the drums and bass sound clearer here from what ive heard in the past of this 8/11 show, in this particular posting.
After this concert Rolling Stone magazine published a very negative review of it, in which they said that Zeppelin sounded awkward and unexciting. What a joke. Page isn't as nimble as he was in '73, but he still played well. And the band as a whole sounds fantastic. Listen to the rhythm section. They sound better than they did in many of the shows durting the 75 and 77 tours. In short: Zep rocked out at Knebworth. Enjoy.
Actually, I'm not watching this video. Just listening to it. Sounds good to me. Even Page's playing. Although, not his best, still decent. This is such a kick ass song either way.
just reading comments...easy to criticise,I wonder if any of you could write or play half as well straight or stoned, jimmy page is a brilliant artist and JPJ is an accomplished musician by any standards
Stop saying they bombed this show. Ok they weren't great in this show but that's because they were sick of playing. They only remained a group because they didn't wanna disapoint fans. You're lucky they didn't give up.
no, it's because of the drugs. Jimmy was always strung out on heroine and Bonzo was always drunk. So yeah, this is a good concert for them in a long time though.
@JimmyPage968 Yeah, Jimmy was smacked out, and it was tough to watch, but though a relatively "average" concert, they did a best-ever "Ten Years Gone" and had a few other high notes. I was impressed they kept the train rollin' that long, and the UK fans were so grateful for the appearances (first time in 4.5 years in England and, as such, last ever)
They cant play...tour wise..the reunion was fine...but they wont play for one reason....in honor of John Henry Bonham...Without him there is no Zeppelin as goes for the other members too.
He is prolly afraid that the reviews wouldn't be good...no way he can carry the notes he used to...he is the king of Rock when it comes to voice; well...was the king.
Why the Alembic sounds so Twangy is because JPJ uses a pick on the Alembic and Alembic Basses are for fingers, not picks. As much as I love JPJ, I some times question how good he is because of him using picks on basses.
You cannot question JPJ in this case cuz he is smart enough to think of using a pick to make shorter notes that pop out so there for him using a pick in some cases prove his genius and we know he can work his fingers by how he plays dazed and confused, bring it on home and immigrant song to name a few
He sometimes uses picks because it creates another sound. Why can a good guitar player use a pick but it's wrong for a bassist to use one? Makes no sense to me.
@MrDrProfessorJrMD well you have to look at in a bassist view. As a fellow bassist i feel a lot more limited while using a pick then using fingers. Many of my friends, who are also bassists, feel the same way about this. You can do SOOOO much more with your fingers than you can with a pick.
Of course, you had to be there... thank god I was! My first ever concert - how blown out of my mind was I? And not a single narcotic in sight... unforgettable
10 4 on that bonzo. The Jazz held the bottom end . For ten+ years, JPJ just got the Alembic and was happy to have something different. Active pickups, new sound, etc.
I think people who say that Zeppelin peaked in early 73 late 72 need to consider the fact that both Jonesy and Bonzo got better every single tour. If Jimmy could have gotten off drugs a bit earlier and Bonzo had lived then the 1980s could have been even better.
(to ledhead) i agree...i'm thinking about how much rock music changed from the 70's to the 80's, and wonder if led zeppelin would've still been great... but if it hadn't ended how it did, i think rock in the 80's would've been completely different. who knows.
This was something like their second to last tour. I agree with you that their best time was 1970-1973, but 1969 and 1974 were also pretty good as well.
Zeppelin never toured in 1974...Also 1970 was probably my favorite, if only they had their full repertoire of songs at the time, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING
Solid State amps such as the Acoustic 370 and Gallien Krueger stuff (used here) were terrific amps.
They gave bassists a clarity at high volume (the Ampeg SVT was the only tube exception) that was great in the primordial and high-volume arena of '70's live concerts.
If you were Led Zep, Grand Funk RR, Ted Nugent, The Stones, Kiss, etc. you still needed stage volume.
All-Tube isn't always better for bass. Different enviroments call for different needs.
This could be my favorite performance, amazing how Page battled it out till the end, even though it wasnt amazing, he played, very well, and performed. All that heroin, laying on his shoulders.
The biggest effect I think the drugs had on Page's playing was just stayin awake for days on end.Your extremities begin to weaken and your digits become difficult to control .
And the sound problem wasn't actually a problem. He just didn't turn the gain on the guitar up all that much here. Trust me. I know this :). The band wanted that raw feel. That is what separated them from the rest of the pack. I mean even The Eagles as big as they were, they were quoted admiring Led Zeppelin lol. That quote shows how powerful these guys were. Not another band has ever really "owned" the high light.
The knebworth show was very much the glimpse into how powerful Led Zeppelin were becoming. They went from the hippie gods we saw them as to strong powerful figures that every band back then looked up to and followed. Between 1975 and 1978 something changed. They achieved such a powerful state. This whole show was heavy and then, well, we all know about the 1980's. They were heading to be the most powerhouse rock band ever known. Not that they weren't already ;)
i lnow page got to high sometimes after 1976 but hes not sloppy he was just that good very telaxed when playing he wasnt tied down with timming worrys like mere mortals lol, there will never ever bee anything like him again just enjoy
The band will be forever known for the pilots of the Led Zeppelin, and all of their passengers are their fans. Even when the Zeppelin is made out of lead, it'll never crash, it'll just keep on flying higher and the more fans who decided to ride along make zeppelin heavier, but the heavier it gets, the higher it'll fly.. May the Zeppelin fly forever and never crash and burn. fly high, Led Zeppelin.. fly high..

Quite possibly THE worst mix I've ever heard. Fascinating to hear that 12 cranked thru a coupla old Marshalls trying to be 'clean'.
With the bass I'm not sure what I hear; plastic being sawed in half? The high-pitched screams of ecstacy I'm giving your girlfriend/wife/mom?
It almost sounds like what farting thru a length of PVC tubing would sound like...
I'm digressing here but the drums are always solid.

I think people who say that Zeppelin peaked in early 73 late 72 need to consider the fact that both Jonesy and Bonzo got better every single tour. If Jimmy could have gotten off drugs a bit earlier and Bonzo had lived then the 1980s could have been even better.

youre dead right
jonesy in carouselambra sounds amazing

People make mistakes, and I'm sure Jimmy, more than anyone else, realizes his.

(to ledhead) i agree...i'm thinking about how much rock music changed from the 70's to the 80's, and wonder if led zeppelin would've still been great... but if it hadn't ended how it did, i think rock in the 80's would've been completely different. who knows.
jesse0192 2 years ago 2
this i think is their very end, they were still led zeppelin but they were going downhill. I think that the 1970-1973 was their best time
iateurcat1823 2 years ago
This was something like their second to last tour. I agree with you that their best time was 1970-1973, but 1969 and 1974 were also pretty good as well.
somefreak90 2 years ago
Zeppelin never toured in 1974...Also 1970 was probably my favorite, if only they had their full repertoire of songs at the time, THAT WOULD BE AMAZING

Oops, I meant 1975.

solid state bass amp sounds good that was jones taste he never used tube bass amps odd huh all that money
bluessoul1286 2 years ago
Solid State amps such as the Acoustic 370 and Gallien Krueger stuff (used here) were terrific amps.
They gave bassists a clarity at high volume (the Ampeg SVT was the only tube exception) that was great in the primordial and high-volume arena of '70's live concerts.
If you were Led Zep, Grand Funk RR, Ted Nugent, The Stones, Kiss, etc. you still needed stage volume.
All-Tube isn't always better for bass. Different enviroments call for different needs.

Page was probably partying all day too... hell hes in the greatest band ever! And he wrote all that shit!

This could be my favorite performance, amazing how Page battled it out till the end, even though it wasnt amazing, he played, very well, and performed. All that heroin, laying on his shoulders.

Sorry folks. I love Zep. Love Page - but he was ass-horrible there. Too high to be playing.
wonderfulbob 3 years ago 3
The biggest effect I think the drugs had on Page's playing was just stayin awake for days on end.Your extremities begin to weaken and your digits become difficult to control .

@wonderfulbob
Yes poor old Pagey is just scagged off the planet .

nice and raw...but with a richness it takes years to acheive.

yes,
jacobywilson 3 years ago
And the sound problem wasn't actually a problem. He just didn't turn the gain on the guitar up all that much here. Trust me. I know this :). The band wanted that raw feel. That is what separated them from the rest of the pack. I mean even The Eagles as big as they were, they were quoted admiring Led Zeppelin lol. That quote shows how powerful these guys were. Not another band has ever really "owned" the high light.
Anthaleus 3 years ago 2
Anthaleus ,
BTW, Joe Walsh of the Eagles gave Jimmy Page his 1958 Sunburst Gibson Les Paul
Back in 1969
that guitar now being among the most valuable in the world - the Stairway to Heaven solo was played on it
Walsh said, it makes me feel really good that it ended up in all that music."
zepsdbest 3 years ago
Not true. Page actually used a '58 Telecaster for the STH solo.
crobbulan 3 years ago 2
Correct. Page mostly used Fender guitars for his studio work. I think only 1 song was recorded with the Double-neck, which is Carouselambra.
Scaremonger456 2 years ago
The Stairway to heaven solo was played with his Telecaster in the studio version not his Les Paul
GibsonRocker942 2 years ago
The 12-String part was also played on a Fender XII electric.

Not that they weren't already ;)

at knebworth there was some led light around jimmy page... is it false?

The band will be forever known for the pilots of the Led Zeppelin, and all of their passengers are their fans. Even when the Zeppelin is made out of lead, it'll never crash, it'll just keep on flying higher and the more fans who decided to ride along make zeppelin heavier, but the heavier it gets, the higher it'll fly.. May the Zeppelin fly forever and never crash and burn. fly high, Led Zeppelin.. fly high..
