  • release this song its amazing

  • A Bizarre Collection Of Puzzles by The Enigma

  • I can't believe that pub song at 01:40, isn't available anywhere!

  • What's the name of the song on the pub jukebox? And does anybody know the name of the pub they're in? Good movie this.

  • @Clarky1966 It's just called the "Song" by Stephen Gilbert (The Pub Song) and no one can find it anywhere, tried years. Not even on the official cd.

  • @zaftra Ta mate. Spent about 6 hours online last night searching for it and got nowhere. Very frustrating. Lovely song like. The pub looks familiar too.

  • @zaftra same here, have the movie, the score is classic electronic music filled with yearning, Just curious, have you found the song in the disco?

  • @deepmolloy I think it's 'David Hentschel - I Can't Dance'. If you put that title in youtube search it's on here.

  • Just one more thing and i'll shut up.

Having done both OU and brick I have to say that the material, structure and support of the open university is far superior to brick. In a Brick they just zoom through the lectures then your left to your own, the lecturers have no time to see people properly and the resources are woefull. In one moduale, paracite immunology, there was TWO books and one girl got all her friends to reserve it, so she had it all semester and no one else got a look in ANGER

  • I like the fact that you see items of Ritas' clothing reappear in different scenes through the film. It looks more authentic than shows and films now where actresses change entire outfits every 30 seconds, and even a belt or pair of shoes cannot be seen again.

  • Z thanks for your post....and I am currently working on a PHD. I did two courses with the open Uni here in Switzerland and like you I found it very expensive and very slow...I think that the Open Uni should make sure that they remain reasonable in terms of fees but as you know higher education has become a huge business in recent years. I dropped 30,000 Swiss francs for my masters but it really payed off in terms of my salary. So best of luck to you and your master's..don't give up!

  • I went back and did a masters at age 45 in international law and it wasn't easy...this film really touched me very deeply and to all those who are wondering whether they can make it going to uni trust your abilities.....I studied like mad and came out with the best grades of my university and now every day I feel that it was worth it so zaffra there is some truth in what you say but it is personal sense of achievement that really counts.

  • @turockandar Yes i agree with you. I wanted to do my masters with either the OU or Hallam uni, for no other reason than the objective, unfortunately it was that expensive my objective will be put on hold. Good for you for doing it. Just think, two years your a doctor!!.

  • Getting a degree meant something when this was filmed, means nothing now.

  • @zaftra Wow. For all the people struggling to get a degree, to whom fate dealt 'non-traditional student' cards and hunt this specific section of this film down to help top up their reserve when it all seems for naught, thanks a lot. Actually, 'it means nothing now' because more people have them. Would you prefer people had fewer opportunities just to keep it an exclusive enough achievement? Modern Day Denny: The Redux.

  • @shamelesshussy Goodness your hypersensitive, you also look fairly young. Let me explain. Firstly I was commenting on ALL degrees not specifically open university, where I started out before going to brick university.

What I mean is two fold. Up until fairly recently, past 10/20 years, very few of the population went to university. If you met university student you almost treated them with hushed reverential tones, this was especially so before the 80's. Now, university students are ten .....

  • a penny, going to uni for 'university life' or because of and elevated chance of a got, mostly both.

Has for degrees themselves, there does seem to be lower quality, in addition a lot are modular based which pretty much means you you know a little about a lot about nothing.

This of course could be a fault with me, thinking degrees where much tougher than I thought, but in the second year at uni we did a thing called modern spectroscopy, on one of the hand outs it had said subject level ....

  • .. one first year.

But has i said, when Rita did her degree a degree was looked upon as something special that only the brainiest could do, and that achievement was much greater given Rita's background, It really was as they portray, people from her back ground where dreamers if they wanted to do a degree.

Ironically, people, especially brick uni students looked down on OU degrees as inferior, whereas now they're looked upon as probably the greater achievement because of other commitments.....

  • erm, anyway, i hope that's answered your criticism a degree is still an achievement, especially distance learning.

I hope you well with yours and get a good grade, keep it up you WILL get your degree, never give up.

  • I am doing this monologue for my A-level drama. I really hope i can do it justice. ;)

  • I first watched this in english class, classic movie, I want the pub song but cant find it anywhere

  • Thanks soooo much for the upload! God bless

  • I tried to find this song as well and found from the internet that it was written for the film as apparantly they couldn't afford the copyright for a proper song that a working-class Liverpudlian family would listen to and sing in the pub !

It is called " The pub song" and was is written and performed by Stephen Gilbert

  • I have watched this film so many times i know it word for word. Why does no-one know the name of the song in the pub?? I want that song so much.

  • Oh that music! Beautiful!

  • What a marvelous film. Thank you for your generosity.

  • I spent ages trying to find the song, but like countless others, it really is a mystery!

for anyone who feels like singing the pub song for themselves the lyrics are:

Who needs all that talking? Who needs all that walking? When we can do ? We can do what we want to

I'm not dreaming of other women and I love you

    But it's always

    On the way

I'm so happy that you're so happy that we're so happy

    Together

    That's OK

  • Ah, I started crying during the "there must be better songs we can sing" bit. It's so sad. Being working class in Britain is basically a caste system; my parents and family are working-class, most women in my family flit between being a stay-at-home mothers to keeping down a part-time job or two, oftentimes in a cafe. I'll be the first woman....well, ever...to graduate University in our family. My mam always encourages me, that's why I started crying. Rita's mother kind of reminds me of my own.

  • thanks for posting. Watched half of it last night but was on too late. Great film and not seen it in ages.

  • I love when she comes to the pub....and says "just what the frig am i trying to do"

    why are you crying mother?

there must be better songs to sing than this

  • Does anyone know the name of the song in the pub

  • @alejodin Thats what I want to know.

This was on telly a couple of weeks ago and that song stuck out to me then. It has a dreamlike quality to me.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song in the pub?

  • this is great- thanx:)

  • I love that song they are singing in the pub-what is it?

  • love this film (and play) it's great. i used her monologue from 3.30 onwards as an audition piece once :)

  • this film has inspired me. i am from a working class family doing a degree. i doubt myself everyday, think what am i doing everyday. but i am trying to sing a better song too

  • Don't ever give up! I'm doing the same thing thats going on in this movie.....don't give up, keep on pushing yourself, I promise you, it will all be worth it in the end....I'm almost finished, you can do it!

  • Oh shut the fuck up...

  • maybe you should get an education too... you might be able to respond to peoples comments more intelligently rather than with vulgarity !!! you pathetic uneducated idiot

  • @leeatseaham :-) xxxxxxx

  • @leeatseaham.i d like to sing a better song too.does anyone know what the pub song was?

  • @leeatseaham

You're wonderful! I have so much respect for people like you. I wish you all the very best in your life. :D

  • @leeatseaham There was a time I would ask myself, "Why am I doing this?" because it was hard working day and studying night --but I graduated with First Class Honours became a tutor and I have just finished my Masters. ...just keep on going - it's more than worth it.

  • what a dick tellin her what to do

  • thats what im trying to do , sing a better song..

  • I love this movie <3

  • I love it too : )

Its my fav movie : )

  • Great film. I'm doing the monologue where she's talking to Frank at college. I absolutely love it. Julie Walters has given me a lot of inspiration.

  • I love this movie and have always wondered about this song. I'm glad I'm not alone but frustrated to find out nobody knows! I love the Pub Song. I want to listen to it over and over!! I want to hear the whole thing!!

  • Me and my friends have a band. As I have always loved the Pub Song, I convinced my bandmates to do our version of it. We will call it simply The Pub Song from Educating Rita. I must say it's quite difficult to put together a version of a song which is only partially available. We even had to come up with additional lyrics. At first we will play it in concerts and see how it goes. Perhaps later we will also record it. Maybe someday I will post our live version here for you to judge.

  • your band sounds cool. not enough genuine souls doing bands anymore.

  • is this song not sung by the waterboys unfortunately I do not know the title either but I do believe there is a version on some waterboys album...please correct me if I am wrong and if you can tell me otherwise also tell me that...

  • Love the song in the pub, but unfortunately no-one knows the title, not even Rita...

  • That pub song is awesome, when will they release it.

I cant think of many songs that are better, Ritas mother was wrong.

  • Many people have tried to find the song, but with no luck. iTunes and Amazon doesn't have it either. It doesn't seem like they'll ever release it. :/

  • @leedel20 - I agree the mother is wrong... some people think riches will make them happy... but look at all those educated people in the film... none of them are really happy. I say this as someone who mostly everyone in the last generation ended up going to university. persons have more money.... but we are all separate and most admit - not as "happy" as when we were all together. Societies values have changed.

  • I actually find the song really quite depressing. It's a brilliant bit of music though in that it really captures the emotion of the scene (and some of the characteristics of lower working class life), illustrating how monotone and inane her family and friends' life is, where nothing is ever discussed or thought about, no individuality - you just blindly comply and sing along with what everyone else is singing, whether you like it or not.

  • zephyruk - I agree with every word. My thoughts EXACTLY from the first time I heard it in the movie. Also, listen to Rita describe her mother's reaction to the song.

  • Yes, and if you listen to the words of the song that's exactly what they express.

  • love the script, love the movie, love the actors. beautiful.

  • well apart from the baby bit lol. this is very well written.

  • what exactly do you mean by this? Do you mean that it is unrealistic, for if so I would not agree. I am curious, hope you don't mind:D

  • oh I feel just like rita in this bit.

  • ok, please does anyone know the name and who sings the song they are all singing in the pub? i love it and don't know how to find it. THANKS!

  • the track was by Stephen Gilbert and its just simply called Pub song

  • thank you! but when i search just his name or the song title i still can't find it. i just want to listen to that song..

  • LOL thought it was just me

i think it was written especially for the film

  • The Pub Song from Educating Rita is really one of the most mysterious motion picture songs. It was apparently written just for the film, but you can't find it on the soundtrack, you can't find it anywhere (except for the film itself)! And yet so many people love this song. Me too. Why don't they release it as a new single, or something.

  • i too need to find out what this sond called and who did it, sounds great doesnt it!

  • Very few timeless films and this isdefinately one of them. I love the dynamic between Caine and Walters...beautiful.

  • Thanks for your comment love !

  • this film never gets old, simply brilliant.

  • Yeah..I agree with u!!!^^

    Thanks for the comment!

    ; )

  • Such a lovely movie, but have you noticed everybody in the movie is English not Irish hehe I mean come on, it's Sheriff Street they are even living in - the roughest and hardest Dublin accents are all over the place there. It is lovely though, enjoy it all everyone!!! I love seeing my University where I graduated at on a movie like this. Especially the first University to allow women to graduate ;)

  • It is supposed to be set in Liverpool.

  • Oh..Thanks for the comment! ^^

  • The yanks cant make films like this..

  • Hey come on! We have great movies over here too.
