I own a 2004 L322 Range Rover Vogue 3.0 td6 and i would never change it with another luxury 4x4...you dont notice if you are on a highway or of you are in the middle of the mud (and believe me i went a lot of times in medium offroad tracks, not because of the car but because im a rookie in offroading and the car has never let me down)

I used to drive a jeep grand cheroke and there was nothing wrong it them but about 2 years ago i got a Range rover sport and there is no comparison between the two the Range rover is a much better car the only other suv that mixes luxury with off roading is the Toyota land cruiser which i drove though a desert out side of Dubai although id have to say i would have rather had a Range Rover

I agree with unsafeSANDWICH, range rovers are the "ultimate off roading vehicle" for people that can afford it. But, I would not call jeep a cheap ass suv. Sure it doesnt have as many offroad features, or as refined interior as the range rover. But it does cost $45,000 less than the range rover, and it does look pretty nice for the 2011 re-design. Believe me I would kill to own a range rover any day, but, fact is us middle class people just cant!

This is car is nice, but I would never take it offroad! Once you waste about 55 grand on a car, than I am pretty sure that you don't want to get any scratches or dents into the car from going offroading on huge rucks, twigs, and a bunch of trees. I don't want to sound like a fanboy but buying a cheap version of a Jeep Wrangler or something can do the trick in offroading and city driving, plus the repairs are cheaper and so are the maintenance. my brother has a range rover and i have a nissan patrol ti with some serious offroad upgrades. i have a 6" lift, MYE suspension and ARB offroader pack, plus upgraded fuel tank, reinforcements and all the extras you could possible need. it cost me around 100,000 AU, whereas my brother paid 220,000AU for his rover. Mine goes much harder offroad than the range rover and although they are excellent and have the bells and whistles to go offroad, you're petrified of repair bills if you damage it.

The RR will go anywhere the Land Cruiser will go and more. But the LC will keep going there while the RR will sometimes break down along the way. In my experience it might not be a real breakdown, often it's just some spurious warnings or it goes to limp mode over something stupid. Which would I want as a companion 2 years down the line on a journey to the earth's nether regions? Toyota every time. dayhandler7 is right about the practicalities but even at the same price, the LC is more reliable.

go and check the fucking ground clearance of a range rover compared to a landcruiser and thats point 1 and i'm sure there are other things that sucks in RR or LR. i mean ground clearance is the first option for a vehicle when its about OFFROADING stupid. United Nations delivers the most offroading missions in the world and Land Cruiser is the vehicle of their choice cause they know a LC will never let them down. They bought 15000 of LCs last year only.

@dayhandler7 read my post. while i enjoy driving the RR, my patrol dominates offroad. 35k of upgrades on a ti (luxury) patrol smashes the RR offroad, and not to mention i can fit bigger tyres on my patrol compared to the RR. In mud, sand, rock and hard rutty trails a patrol or LC is better, even without ground clearance. while range rover boasts all the nice perks inside and it IS good offroad, the raw capabilities of LC and patrol are better, sorry.

The other luxury 4WDs develope more and more to street station wagons, like the brandnew VW Touareg for example. There´s almost nothing left anymore to cross- ability and the Range will be alone on the market as 40 years ago. Don`t become bigger and havier anymore, but do the opposite! You're right dude, anyway you cant compare the range rover and the hummer, the range rover is a car designed to be the best luxury vehicle on earth, and it is, it's as comfortable as a phantom and it can deal with any terrain with ease. The hummer might be slightly better offroad but it'll never match the refinement obtained by the range rover, these cars aren't playing in the same category. For me it's definitely RR all the way, its an amazing car :D

I agree with you that H1's are insane. However, Rovers are nothing to laugh at. It is interesting that you mentioned drop tests on the H1. They actually designed the Bowler Wildcat, which is a modified Rover, to survive a 40 foot drop. Not sure if they tested it or not but it gives you an idea of just what goes into these things.

@NewCoordinator Any properly spec'd 4x4 with decent articulation, good weight distribution, good tyres and a decent drivetrain is going to do well offroad - Pajero, Hilux, Hummer, Defender, Jimny - they're all *GOOD* offroaders and they'll all do well in the mud. The Hummer will climb better than any of the others because of its wheelbase, and the Jimny will crest better for the same reason.

You can't say that a Hummer "smokes" a Defender, they're both good for different reasons.

I have to intervene there, i think you have a very good point, but a lot of people are still referring to Land Rover in the 80's back then they were very unreliable so were Jaguar, but now they have improved vastly and being a Range Rover for over 14 years now and had 2 Rangies i can assure you that i not once had a single problem with it and they are an extremely reliable care today!

I think its the way the light just shines on it, I have seen this car in the UK and its wheels have not been changed, the new design has a little square section that sits proud on the bottom of the spoke as it meets the rim, this looks like it catches the light here perhaps presenting the thought of damage, one for the style team to consider in future that! But a brief jet wash soon brings them back to life, the present MY09 4.2SC look a mess with mud on them, but soon revive with some cleaning

I wouldn't dare ever say that a Land Cruiser can do more than a Range Rover. Land Rover's not only look better than Land Cruiser's but they are better off road, I would know I go wheeling all the time with Toyota's and guess who they have lead the trips, ME because they knwo my Range will get to the other side and be able to help them up if need be:)

The Range Rover is a fabulous car. The best, which is why the British Royal Family drive them.

The LandCruiser is a good car but too expensive in the UK, almost Range Rover money. But sells for about 25k in Japan. The UN buys loads of Landcruisers because Toyota gives them a good price. and are probably a touch more reliable.

But Id prefer a Range Rover to an Landcruiser anyday. More style, better to drive and better off road with an interior of a Rolls Royce! the Best off roader

That's true, you can't compare Land Crusier Prado or FJ Crusier with the land rover's, but you can compare, the Land Crusier HZJ series with the Land Rover, and in that case, Land Crusier can win.

The HZJ series fight with the LR Defender, but not with the Range or the LR4, only with the Defender
