  • Much Respect From Portland Oregon Rip City!

  • @xeridian That... Or he just had a hole in his pocket.

  • As much as I love the song. I have to remember the times I needed to change the bus on 6th street LA (aka skid row) and couldn't get home because I gave away all money to the sorry eyes. So now I avoid eye contact with a "beggar" if I want to get home.

  • @davekeays Someone had poor foresight imo.

  • @runnersdialzero333 , no question about that. Back then I couldn't resist the temptation to listen to my "heart", even when listening too hard got me in trouble.

  • @davekeays = )

  • my mums used to sing that to me as a ute. big message in the music, big ratings keep doin what ur doin.

  • so fix it dear henry, dear henry... I love you Michael Franti and SpearHeads... I love you world!!!

Peace and love to all you'll even the 15 that dont get it!!!

  • @ALETHEIA8881 totally agree with you.

  • DID ANYONE CATCH 2:33????????

  • @maa222c no ???

  • @maa222c ya that was some spooky shit

  • It's a real shame Michael Franti has finally gotten worldwide recognition and instead of making an inspirational album with a REAL message like this one or even Stay Human, he chose to make a weak bubblegum pop album with "The Sound of Sunshine", which is still a good album, but it seems like a wasted opportunity to get some real music with relevant topics out there.

  • This song is so much deeper than most people realize...

The meaning is not near as obvious as it seems.

    Though, open for interpretation.

  • @xeridian Go on..

  • @Brugality

We all have a bucket and they all have holes in them.

What we do with what we have in that bucket before its slips through is very important.

If we wait and never use what is in our own buckets, we and every one else ends up with nothing to gain from it. Only wasted time... The thread represents a false security, a way to possibly keep us from losing what we have, but time slips through the cracks every single second and it can never be replaced. Either we contribute or we go empty

  • @Brugality

    Think of a Sand-dial...

It's not what others do with what's in their buckets, it's what you do with what's in yours.

  • DE WUEVOSSSSSSSSS

  • Hey are you still alive mate/ alcohol/drugs is not part of the Plan! Imagine no possessions, without the deterrent of drugs, alcohol, No Mcdonald Hamburgers...Now that is POWER!!! Where there is Light, there is no darkness.....Where there is darkness, there is no Light! Take it from one who knows both sides. (A Camp???) Everybody else in "The Family "...I only have one thing to say, Namaste

  • I have not heard this song in 15 years!!!

  • Reminds me of the time I had to change buses on skid row for my daily commute. Sometimes I gave away so much that I didn't have money to get home, so I learned to never look in a "beggar"s eyes because there was always another set of eyes waiting, and another, and another, ...

  • there's a hole in the system....

  • I love this song and this guy's voice is great!

  • @Ndobless well if he's not involved in music anymore, hopefully he's doing some voice work eh?

  • @AudioInklined Yeah That would be great too hehe

  • @AudioInklined Oh, he's certainly involved in music. The singer's name is Michael Franti, of Michael Franti & Spearhead. Check them out, you won't regret it.

  • Not the type of music I usually listen to. Found it by accident really and for some reason listened to the whole thing.

Now I know the reason why I needed the thread...

Very nice ^_^ Good message, well done and not overly pushy. I like this song.

  • MTV BEFORE THEY WENT REALITY CRAZY.........LONG LIVE THE 90'S THIS WAS SO UNDERATED

  • This CLASSIC hip hop video from 1994 represents a part of life that Hip Hop in 2010 has ignored and forgotten

  • still cant remember why i need this spool of thread

  • Very deep! I love this guy and there is a hole in the bucket...get a rise-up!

  • @kamadevful its dear liza, not get a rise-up.

just wanted to let you know.

  • @AudioInklined, I have risen-up... Hey you...tans, you have restored my faith in "humanity", "possibilities" etc. Listen to my CD AUTUMN Vrindavan 2008 (Sripad Aindra & Maharaja Radhe Radhe

    Vishnave Swami Maharaja

  • Mr. Jaroch showed us this video when i was in 6th grade. Ahh the memories... now im in 7th grade. Yay!

  • Epic

  • It's so easy to find them here in L.A. and so hard to discern who really needs it ,who takes it as a business and who does it only for drugs, believe me.

You hungry ?..I'll buy you some food my friend.

Need a bus fare? I'll buy you the ticket.

I try not to give them cash but not always can.

If I do it ,in my mind I just say, it goes in your conscience.

How do I think this is the greatest country in the world when I see so many homeless people downtown?

We are in this world to help each other.

  • Fk yer this song is awsome!!!

  • deep

  • i love it.

  • Hope we can listen to the lyrics because this story goes on everyday. Love this song.

  • There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza, a hole...

  • I will give to food lines and local charities, but rarely to a homeless person.

When I see people on the street I think of how on 6th street and San Pedro in LA. I would end-up unconscious on the street because of medical problems and walk away with empty pockets and no medicine in my brief case. I know, only a few cowards would steal from a kid lying unconscious, but it colored my view and has bittered me for life.

  • Excellent song and video!

  • i like blue chips

    -jesus

  • here's a challenge for those of you who see a homeless person and don't want to give them money in case they buy booze or drugs, ask if they are hungry and can you buy them some food or coffee. That way you can tell the desperate from the scams. I quite often buy people meals, but I wont give money. The gratitude I see on peoples faces, because I have treated them with respect , makes me sad as such a simple thing for me is such a huge thing for them. It makes it all worthwhile.

  • @chickinchainmail or just make a real difference and support The Venus Project :)

  • @cybermutagen I'm not sure what the Venus project is, but here in Sydney Australia, my preferred charity is the Sydney City Mission, which helps the homeless and provides shelters and such like.

  • @chickinchainmail problems must be solve at the root of the problem. look up the venus project com i know they're also in australia :)

  • @cybermutagen also look up the zeitgeist movement as they're connected to the venus project

  • The cup said, "America, Love or Leave it." I have a friend that always says that...

  • Michael Franti ... beautiful soul !!

  • When this song came out in the 90's, I had a hole in my bucket. This song meant the world to me. The hole has since been patched. MUSIC IS LIFE!! Thank you Spearhead!!

  • @zxkitaxz Amen. This song is so profound.

  • This is such an amazing song. Very powerful. Thank you Spearhead!

  • one day its a hole in your pocket, the next day it could be a hole in your bucket. yeah, now I remember why I needed that thread...it connects us all.

  • I just saw Franti and Spearhead at Hookahville last night! I now have a new favorite. HE IS GREAT LIVE! POSTIVE VIBES all all around.

  • If anyone hasn't seen Michael Franti in concert, you absolutely have to. It is one of the most powerful experiences that you will ever be a part of.

  • what's that acoustic guitar part sampled from? I know it from somewhere

  • my 25 yr Son Carrick hasnt gotten up to rap since High School. He became a Father & Husband while still in college. He's got all his writings. Im sending him Michael Franti & Spearhead to show him where he can go with his talent now that he's got the family unit and dental career stable.

  • @lorettamarmor Yep...just drop the thriving dental career, go to Hollywood, and become a Rap star......Good advice

  • love this song

  • as one of my rings says: "be the change you wish to see in the world" - - Ghandi

  • To arj805: you are a rare human being. I have basically lost faith in the human race at this point (including myself - I don't get a free pass and I am more hard on myself then anyone else) but you have just renewed my optimism - seriously. It seems like you are doing what I am trying to do - refusing to compromise with evil and refusing to compromise with it and thinking rationally. Good stuff and good results - thank you, you saved me from slitting my wrists.

  • great vi AWESOME message!!!

  • This is a cool Video I also like the song verry verry much

  • a buddhist monk walks up to a hotdog vender and says "make me one with everything"

  • Hibátlan!!!

  • I like this song a lot. Same thoughts that go through my head everytime I pass by one of them. Does it really matter what they will do- just because even if they'll buy wine (or beer more likely) - it'll still mean more to him then to me.

  • "Almost anything you do will seem insignificant, but it is very important that you do it. "

  • @worldunited1234 You're quite Welcome my Tiny handed friend

  • hole in my bucket and there is no soul left in the world ....lost with out love the disease are worn unscribed with no glove.. there's a hole in my bucket and the world can carless what i'm validating not problem is the stress to unbearable there's a hole in my bucket and noone cares

  • the world has lost its soul in more then one way ppl care its lost its soul in the music and the heart the music now is not music but its still good

  • some one must cares man who cares what the worlds like man my dad died in April last year and im still kicking just think it will get better

  • i agree with luchador21 why haven't i heard him them before?

  • Check out his album, "Stay Human". It's brilliant !!

  • nice song, props

  • i agree arj805 thats true

  • do you know what gos on in a hobos head its not true

  • So what if bums use it for alcohol/drugs just give some change, they are still human they put themselves there but, let them be addicts or whatever its not like your taking them in your house hold. We are not perfect and don't deserve some of the things we have. too many ungrateful and selfish people in America. There should be no homeless in our so called great country.

  • @arj805 are you kidding me ????!!!!! have you ever heard of working for something??? why would you call us selfish if we dont want to give them money if their buying food or somthing useful then ill be happy to give them somthing but alot of them buy drugs and booze...

  • @arj805 inspirational stuff right there bro

  • @arj805 you're not taking them in, you're not seeing them do this to themselves, but you get the guilt of knowing your money is helping them kill themselves. It could be money used for a good cause. Might as well actualy help them and buy them food and give it to them. then you know its pit to good use/

  • @arj805 2shay

  • @arj805 Well said, friend.

  • @arj805 okay, with that state of mind, say one of those homeless guys wants to come live at your house, and he doesn't want to shower, contribute in any way, and wants to lay on your couch all day and make that his new bed, rain or shine, regardless of what you want.

..so to take care of the homeless problem, are you sure you would be okay with that? since "there should be no homeless in our so called great country"?

if you say anything besides no, you're lying.

  • @arj805 its not just america. in fact theres more arrogant pricks in europe that are disgusted by seein bums b/c they aren't as norm there as they are here. try finding a bum in switzerland or somethin... not gonna happen

  • no,,we a KNOW the bums are going to drink it...no doubt. Any capable person can find a place to eat, homeless shelter, food bank etc.. The money in the cup is for wine.. cheap wine....everyone knows it

  • thats ball how do you know what gos on in a hobos head ha were you a bum ha were you

  • Great song and album. What more can I say? :)

  • Am I imagining things or was there another video with a much more global theme? The first time I heard this song, it was accompanied a clip that represented the cruel cycle of third world debt. In the end a little African tyke paid the hard-earned dollar back to the superpowers.

  • this video was spearheads original video theme i think the version you may be thinking of may be a revised version of the original that may have had a better understanding of this message

  • great song lyrics

    beautiful words

  • Love the song!

(By the way, isn't the chorus form a children's song? Or from that one that Harry Belafonte sang? :P)

  • Yes, Hole In The Bucket is an old tradtional song. Belafonte did a famous duet cover with Odetta around 1960 (I think it was a live New York theater recording, I can't remember). Many people also remember it from their childhood due to a great muppet version from Sesame Street in the 70s. George Gobel & Dean Martin did a great version as well. All of these are available here on YouTube.

I REALLY like it when modern artists show that they know the old classics like that & don't ruin them.

  • i knew i wasn't fuckin trippen i tried remind people of this song but everybody i knew didn't remember this song GOOD LOOKIN ON THE POST

  • Claypool Played with these guys live i remember seeing on the Videoplasty home vid.

  • songs like this are what i miss when i think about rap and hip hop....this really has it all....it's got the lyrics, the music, the message, it sticks with you and makes you think...it's everything that good art should do.

  • OMG, it's been 15 years since I heard this song. I was nine when it came out. I couldn't remember the group though, but I remember the video. I love this song. I wish music today was powerful and meaningful as this.

  • WOW! I totally forgot about this song. I remember seeing the video in 1994, I was 16 and drove my white ass to record town and got the cd. Those were the days! Cruzing in my 1992 Mustang convertible listening to this, and thinking I'm the coolest mother fucker in the world. I was so wrong. :(

  • I remember watching this video every hour in the summer of 1995 in mtv.. music was great then!....

  • If you dig this be sure to check out his previous band "Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy", highly recommended.

  • When I was 18 (I'm 33 now..) I worked at a magazine shop/newstand type place...I got a CMJ magazine and this song was on the cd..I always loved it..and its sad..that it took till today that I heard the name Franti..and to llok back at this to understand what it meant...I apologize..and ty

    It's gonna be a hit!

One of the best raps evah... I heard it way back in 1995. Still blows my mind away. Michael is da man!

  • Incredible! Simple but deep... Nice use of an old silly lyric. Thanks Michael

  • A most awesome song!!!

  • I love this track, takes me back to when it came out.

  • This was on a poverty video featured on the Notting Hill vhs copy, love this song x

  • This is a good song with a good message. I heard about it from (gasp!) MTV (when they actually played music videos) when it was one of those MTV Buzz clips.

  • yup, same here... remember rushing to put a tape in the vhs to record it. ;P

  • my groove... this and mr.wendel... when did hiphop stop being intelligent?

    check my site

    Pax

  • years later i still love this song

  • First time I've heard Spearhead - great lyrics, very intelligent, thought-provoking. Liked "don't wanna cigarette 'cause it's a form of slavery"...

  • michael franti the gift that keeps giving

  • un grande!!!!!

  • My favorite part of the video is the change falling into the sewer. It reminds me of how thoughtless I am about spending my money on crap we don't need. My money is just falling into the sewer of our over consumption while I walk past a world in need.

  • Thanks for the upload - loved the CD when it came out (actually, I still think it's Spearhead's best album), loved the song with this bad-ass groove, but had never seen the video, which is brilliant!

  • John Lennon of this era, I hope everyone shares this music with young and old-he is such an inspiration, using his talent for the greater good!

  • daaaaaaamn. jus got a flashback.havent heard this shit in madd long, wow
