As much as I love the song. I have to remember the times I needed to change the bus on 6th street LA (aka skid row) and couldn't get home because I gave away all money to the sorry eyes. So now I avoid eye contact with a "beggar" if I want to get home.
@runnersdialzero333 , no question about that. Back then I couldn't resist the temptation to listen to my "heart", even when listening too hard got me in trouble.
It's a real shame Michael Franti has finally gotten worldwide recognition and instead of making an inspirational album with a REAL message like this one or even Stay Human, he chose to make a weak bubblegum pop album with "The Sound of Sunshine", which is still a good album, but it seems like a wasted opportunity to get some real music with relevant topics out there.
We all have a bucket and they all have holes in them.
What we do with what we have in that bucket before its slips through is very important.
If we wait and never use what is in our own buckets, we and every one else ends up with nothing to gain from it. Only wasted time... The thread represents a false security, a way to possibly keep us from losing what we have, but time slips through the cracks every single second and it can never be replaced. It's so easy to find them here in L.A. and so hard to discern who really needs it ,who takes it as a business and who does it only for drugs, believe me.
You hungry ?..I'll buy you some food my friend.
Need a bus fare? I'll buy you the ticket.
I try not to give them cash but not always can.
If I do it ,in my mind I just say, it goes in your conscience.
How do I think this is the greatest country in the world when I see so many homeless people downtown?
I will give to food lines and local charities, but rarely to a homeless person.
When I see people on the street I think of how on 6th street and San Pedro in LA. I would end-up unconscious on the street because of medical problems and walk away with empty pockets and no medicine in my brief case. I know, only a few cowards would steal from a kid lying unconscious, but it colored my view and has bittered me for life.
here's a challenge for those of you who see a homeless person and don't want to give them money in case they buy booze or drugs, ask if they are hungry and can you buy them some food or coffee. That way you can tell the desperate from the scams. I quite often buy people meals, but I wont give money. The gratitude I see on peoples faces, because I have treated them with respect , makes me sad as such a simple thing for me is such a huge thing for them. It makes it all worthwhile.
@cybermutagen I'm not sure what the Venus project is, but here in Sydney Australia, my preferred charity is the Sydney City Mission, which helps the homeless and provides shelters and such like.
When this song came out in the 90's, I had a hole in my bucket. This song meant the world to me. The hole has since been patched. MUSIC IS LIFE!! Thank you Spearhead!!

Good stuff and good results - thank you, you saved me from slitting my wrists.

So what if bums use it for alcohol/drugs just give some change, they are still human they put themselves there but, let them be addicts or whatever its not like your taking them in your house hold. We are not perfect and don't deserve some of the things we have. too many ungrateful and selfish people in America. There should be no homeless in our so called great country.
@arj805 are you kidding me ????!!!!! have you ever heard of working for something??? why would you call us selfish if we dont want to give them money if their buying food or somthing useful then ill be happy to give them somthing but alot of them buy drugs and booze...
@arj805 you're not taking them in, you're not seeing them do this to themselves, but you get the guilt of knowing your money is helping them kill themselves. It could be money used for a good cause. Might as well actualy help them and buy them food and give it to them. then you know its pit to good use/
@arj805 okay, with that state of mind, say one of those homeless guys wants to come live at your house, and he doesn't want to shower, contribute in any way, and wants to lay on your couch all day and make that his new bed, rain or shine, regardless of what you want.
..so to take care of the homeless problem, are you sure you would be okay with that? since "there should be no homeless in our so called great country"?

Am I imagining things or was there another video with a much more global theme? The first time I heard this song, it was accompanied a clip that represented the cruel cycle of third world debt. In the end a little African tyke paid the hard-earned dollar back to the superpowers.
this video was spearheads original video theme i think the version you may be thinking of may be a revised version of the original that may have had a better understanding of this message
Yes, Hole In The Bucket is an old tradtional song. Belafonte did a famous duet cover with Odetta around 1960 (I think it was a live New York theater recording, I can't remember). Many people also remember it from their childhood due to a great muppet version from Sesame Street in the 70s. George Gobel & Dean Martin did a great version as well. All of these are available here on YouTube.
I REALLY like it when modern artists show that they know the old classics like that & don't ruin them.
songs like this are what i miss when i think about rap and hip hop....this really has it all....it's got the lyrics, the music, the message, it sticks with you and makes you think...it's everything that good art should do.
OMG, it's been 15 years since I heard this song. I was nine when it came out. I couldn't remember the group though, but I remember the video. I love this song. I wish music today was powerful and meaningful as this.
WOW! I totally forgot about this song. I remember seeing the video in 1994, I was 16 and drove my white ass to record town and got the cd. Those were the days! Cruzing in my 1992 Mustang convertible listening to this, and thinking I'm the coolest mother fucker in the world. I was so wrong. :(
When I was 18 (I'm 33 now..) I worked at a magazine shop/newstand type place...I got a CMJ magazine and this song was on the cd..I always loved it..and its sad..that it took till today that I heard the name Franti..and to llok back at this to understand what it meant...I apologize..and ty
This is a good song with a good message. I heard about it from (gasp!) MTV (when they actually played music videos) when it was one of those MTV Buzz clips.
HAHAHA i remember that.. i remember it very well actually; summer of 1995!... i remember watching bevis & Butthead and seeing this thing everyhour after the GRIND haha... oh man i miss the 90s
My favorite part of the video is the change falling into the sewer. It reminds me of how thoughtless I am about spending my money on crap we don't need. My money is just falling into the sewer of our over consumption while I walk past a world in need.
Thanks for the upload - loved the CD when it came out (actually, I still think it's Spearhead's best album), loved the song with this bad-ass groove, but had never seen the video, which is brilliant!

Why don't they re-release it as a single now.? "In the midst of recession..." Right on the money! Or the lack of it...
It's gonna be a hit!
One of the best raps evah... I heard it way back in 1995. Still blows my mind away. Michael is da man!

This is a good song with a good message. I heard about it from (gasp!) MTV (when they actually played music videos) when it was one of those MTV Buzz clips.

Me too for that matter. Ahh the Buzz Clips. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

First time I've heard Spearhead - great lyrics, very intelligent, thought-provoking. Liked "don't wanna cigarette 'cause it's a form of slavery"...

My favorite part of the video is the change falling into the sewer. It reminds me of how thoughtless I am about spending my money on crap we don't need. My money is just falling into the sewer of our over consumption while I walk past a world in need.
carolynwk 3 years ago
Thanks for the upload - loved the CD when it came out (actually, I still think it's Spearhead's best album), loved the song with this bad-ass groove, but had never seen the video, which is brilliant!
