@thoroughlyThoreau And what part of that isn't covered by "I can't explain why"? did you bypass reading comprehension on the way to your MFA in Internet Snark?
I can't explain why but this song seems to me to be proof that there is a God (by whatever name you call it). It's simple and complex and jaw-droppingly amazing.
@stymification It's music written by man for man. People do exceptional things all the time. It is not proof of the existence of a divine being. It's proof of the creativity, intelligence, and inspiration present in humankind.
@FiberMuffins good name - you certainly keep the sh!t flowing dontcha? People like you and fundie religiotards are opposite side of the same small-minded coin.
Well the problem I have with this is, well i think he played it perfectly with the notes and timing. But its as if all the notes blend together, I find it hard to pick out the voices and the notes and such.
Sorry to say it, but while this performance is technically proficient, it lacks SOUL - and don't tell me Bach's music doesn't have soul: it's awesomely emotional (as well as intellectually satisfying) when played properly: think B minor Mass - now THAT'S raw emotion at its go-for-Baroque finest!!!!
@HolyMotherofGrid Agree. I think issue is not enough differentiation in phrasing and no dynamic differentiation. I often experience this with younger players...all brawn and technical prowess but lacking in musical and dynamic interpretation.. If you listen to same musician playing same piece separated by time, you'[ll hear difference. Generally I've found, age brings not only soul wisdom but musical wisdom...aka "soul" as well. Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter.
@androo4salez Like much of Bach's music, it has 4 semi-independent "voices" which play with the fugue theme, develop counter-themes and weave intricate counterpoint. Bach was the absolute master of this sort of thing - and it takes a masterful keyboard player to maintain the independence of each voice while bringing out the original fugue theme no matter where it happens to be at any give time.
@Helyzz82 you have to understand that not everyone shows emotion in the same way, although he doesn't move his head and body around as much as some, his emotion might be expressed through his face, which is not seen. It might also be due to the fact that it is kind of difficult to be moving around while using the pedals .
@RJPBurtonBoards You are right about that, but actually I meant the music, not his appearance. When I listen without watching I still don't feel the power, and I thought, maybe it's because of the 'jumpiness' way he sometimes plays the piece. It feels like he's playing 'johnny comes marching home' with the wrong papers in front of him.
Ofcourse my point of view. It can very well be that other people prefer this piece.. they are forgiven ;)
I hate how ignorant some people are when it comes to certain peices, like little fugue, and Toccata et Fuga in D minor. I can't play either peice without someone shouting "Stop playing that evil music" at me. Some songs were designed that way, but I am highly doubtful that toccata et Fugue was created for someone's funeral, much less Vampires. That's just because modern people adapted it to certain movies that were ment to stike fear. Bach has many lovely peices, like Jesu joy of man's desiring.
@supersmashermeta You think THIS sound evil? Go take a lissen to the final boss of Megman Legends (64). THAT'S the most evil re-do of this song I've even heard.
It is always more professional looking to have your musical score sheets in front of you and in the case of a memory blank out one will be ever grateful of having the musical notation to fall back upon.
@chapter24 I agree, this is totally unremarkable. It seems like he doesn't give a shit. Aside from the fucked up tempi and interpretive sloppiness there are so many actual mistakes i.e., incorrect notes. What a waste of time.
Classical music is called that way for a reason. Rihanna, justin timberlake or whoever the heck is playing on the radio will be forgotten. But bach will still be playing in a 100 years.
I think the smartest thing in this song is that at the very climax of the second when u expect the third voice to come in, it doesn't; instead it comes in a bit later.
Everybody has their own favourite music and composer. I think it's totally useless to talk about who was the greatest or argue that the composers of one period were *better* than those of another, pretending to be stating an objective truth.
lol, Megaman Legends is the reason I'm learning how to play the organ, now lol. I know it's called "Little Fugue" - but I STILL like calling it "Juno's Theme" lol
I first heard this in Megaman Legends as well. Heck the first time I heard Toccata and Fugue in D minor, or at least part of it, was in Battle Arena Toshinden.
Then there's the classical I heard in all the Bugs Bunny cartoons. Too bad they don't use classical as much anymore, it kicks the crap out of 99% of todays music.
@DarkSeraphim02 HAHAHA SAME HERE THAT WAS AN AWESOME GAME WHEN YOU HAD TO FACE THE BOSS AT THE END AND FUNNY THING IS THAT I THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE TOO

@littlemacaddict lol, well, I"m a Music Major.. and had just heard of the piece for the first time about a year ago, when I was killing time, playing MegaMan lol. I am a piano performance major, but hearing this inspired me to purchase a home organ :D
es kommt nicht auf die skillz an man muss solche sachen erstmal schreiben könn ....das is was solche leute wie bach ausmacht mit genug übung wird man früher oder später solche sachen spielen können
Was Bach the coolest composer ever or what? Kiyo Watanabe also has great skill as an organist, but the main thing that makes this song so awesome is the way it's written. Makes me wanna learn to play piano (or organ, or clavichord ect.)
VAST difference in "classical" and Baroque....ravenrage07 is very correct that many people call, even Baroque-era, "classical", the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, etc., not even close to the Baroque Masters.
its not necessarily Baroque, just that Bach was the best composer of all time. Besides, the fugue is a medium where undisputed brilliance can shine through, and the classical period is simplistic and shallow in comparison because of the lack of difficult counterpoint
I took one semester of music appreciation and got a B- and now I"m gonna laugh at the simpletons that don't know the difference between the baroque and classical periods.
mwa hahaha! My quest for knowledge is ready to turn in!

Just like all the Arts.
But really it's better this way. Students already have enough trouble learning 2+2=4, let's not make them riot by forcing them to learn why Rubens is a baroque painter and why Poussin in a classical painter.
indeed it is in my school district. We all have to have a basic music background up until high school. I continued and will continue music studies....music is huge in our world, old and new.
yeah people use the general term classical to signify all that though since most people dont know the difference. Of course we do but alot of people just say that and we accept it.
Yeah for some reason i thought it was a harpsichord. Im taking music appreciation in college right now and my teacher said alot of fugues were with a harpsichord and i didnt listen to this enough, just assumed lol.
It would seem to me that, until an organist plays (or at least attempts) this piece, they really haven't utilized their full potential. Not that this song is overly hard (and I'm NOT saying it's easy either), but to realize the full spirited potential within oneself, this song would appear to be the appropriate conduit by which it should be done. Excellence in every note!
Bach, as you rightfully sit in your place of celestial paradise, I say thank you for your wonderful contributions!
I've heard Kiyo and Chemi both play live at my college in Las Vegas Nevada. I find them to be both absolutely amazing in their organ technique as well as their duet abilities. This shows how good he is.
listening to this in comparison to the Canadian Brass version, the organ has a more dark and ominous tone while the Brass quintet harbors a lighter tone. they are both very enjoyable and i have played fugue in g minor on trumpet in a quintet as well and it was a very enjoyable experience not only to enjoy the piece but also to see what it feels like to play a certain part on a different instrument.
I love this piece, but in my opinion it would be MUCH better if it ended in a minor chord, rather than major. I just hate it when songs in minor keys end in major, it just ruins the atmosphere.
The ending of a Baroque piece with a major (happy) chord is known as the Picardy third.... utilized universally in Baroque music. Sorry, that's just how it is. I think the meaning was that evil shall never prevail where the love of god exists. One has to think like a person from the period to really GET this music. Hope this helps.
the fugue has been around since the middle ages, before there was proper music notation. it's unlikely anyone can answer that question. it probably evolved from imitative vocal form (think row row row your boat) and got gradually more freeform through the renaissance, when musicians were becoming far more open-minded. in bach's time, the fugue was a genre like rock and classical are genres to us, and he took it about as far as anyone possibly could.
btw i didnt mean to give the impression that bach is a product of the renaissance; actually the musical baroque period (which followed the renaissance) is typically thought to end the year of bach's death in 1750.
No, the fugue has certainly not been around since the Middle ages and Renaissance. Don't get imitative/polyphonic music mixed up with a fugue. A fugue is a proper form in and of itself and was developed in the Baroque. There is no such thing as a medieval fugue. Also, I don't get where you are getting this rock music to fugue genre analogy going. Some people don't even consider the fugue to be a form, more a musical texture, it was hardly considered it's own entire genre.
Like all genres, the fugue evolved from previous genres in previous ages. The fugue itself, as a genre, did not exist until the Baroque but WOULD not exist if not for the Renaissance genres.
The term "fugue" dates back as far as the middle ages, when it had a different meaning. It is true that as we know it today, the fugue is a product of the Baroque. As for the genre thing, music in the Baroque had genres (fugue, concerto grosso, sonata, etc) in the same way music has genres today (rock, jazz, classical). Not that Baroque fugue is equivalent in some way to rock, aside from the fact that it fits a contemporary genre of its period the same way Elvis fits a genre of our period.
Feels like I'm dealing with a fight between my two teenage boys the only difference is they are not talking about who has the bigger dick but who has the bigger music know-how. Makes me sick to think that people that listen to music haven't a clue how to appriciate others opinion about it and respect that opinion without thinking its an insult to their own Ideals. The world is bad enough without using musical opinions as yet another way to insult each other. WOW, I need a ticket off this ride.
Is anyone just listening to the music and enjoying it here, or are you all bunch of know it alls. Please for the rest of us, get off the pot and let us enjoy this fine music. Good heavens what's the fuss all about anyway?. don't give me " He said it first "or I might have to call you busted. Just enjoy the music. Hells Bells music is for everyone and it does not have an opinion. It's just played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GADS.

I've heard Kiyo and Chemi both play live at my college in Las Vegas Nevada. I find them to be both absolutely amazing in their organ technique as well as their duet abilities. This shows how good he is.

dude u rock i havent heard good quality music like this and im more of a hi-tech person i love this song
very dark and ominous
NuggetHead34 2 years ago
listening to this in comparison to the Canadian Brass version, the organ has a more dark and ominous tone while the Brass quintet harbors a lighter tone. they are both very enjoyable and i have played fugue in g minor on trumpet in a quintet as well and it was a very enjoyable experience not only to enjoy the piece but also to see what it feels like to play a certain part on a different instrument.

Nicely done! I love how you entoduced soft trumpets at 2:24. Nice choice. I could be wrong about the stop name though. Perhaps it is a Clarion

I love this piece, but in my opinion it would be MUCH better if it ended in a minor chord, rather than major. I just hate it when songs in minor keys end in major, it just ruins the atmosphere.
BenDaHen123 2 years ago
ending in major is how a fugue works. it is like a big resolution from the whole piece from passing on themes to different keys and such.
elkanviel 2 years ago 3
Just my opinion. This song has a somewhat haunting atmosphere for me, and it is shattered ending with a happy note.
BenDaHen123 2 years ago
listen to tocatta/fugue in D minor for something more of that style.
KZNOODL3 2 years ago
Yeah that is one of my all time favorite pieces of music.
BenDaHen123 2 years ago 2
The ending of a Baroque piece with a major (happy) chord is known as the Picardy third.... utilized universally in Baroque music. Sorry, that's just how it is. I think the meaning was that evil shall never prevail where the love of god exists. One has to think like a person from the period to really GET this music. Hope this helps.

Ah that makes sense. I just have a love for dark and sorrowful music, so I guess it is all based on opinion and taste.
BenDaHen123 2 years ago
yup true that. u cant change what bach has done. he created the fugue and theres no way of changing his principles
KZNOODL3 2 years ago
Bach did not create the fugue, but he certainly did perfect the form.
muddro420 2 years ago 3
who created the fugue then?
KZNOODL3 2 years ago
the fugue has been around since the middle ages, before there was proper music notation. it's unlikely anyone can answer that question. it probably evolved from imitative vocal form (think row row row your boat) and got gradually more freeform through the renaissance, when musicians were becoming far more open-minded. in bach's time, the fugue was a genre like rock and classical are genres to us, and he took it about as far as anyone possibly could.
muddro420 2 years ago
btw i didnt mean to give the impression that bach is a product of the renaissance; actually the musical baroque period (which followed the renaissance) is typically thought to end the year of bach's death in 1750.
muddro420 2 years ago
Bach isn't a product of the renaissance, he is a culmination of the Baroque.
theclinger 2 years ago 37
@theclinger HE is one of the greatest things to come out of the baroque, and his death is usually synonymous with the death of the baroque era

GiantRobot17 2 years ago
Like all genres, the fugue evolved from previous genres in previous ages. The fugue itself, as a genre, did not exist until the Baroque but WOULD not exist if not for the Renaissance genres.
muddro420 2 years ago
BACH created this so called genres. He was The MAN.
Pornitopia 2 years ago 2
That's just not true.
He mastered the genre in such a way that no one could improve upon him.
He didn't create the idea.
muddro420 2 years ago 2
The term "fugue" dates back as far as the middle ages, when it had a different meaning. It is true that as we know it today, the fugue is a product of the Baroque. As for the genre thing, music in the Baroque had genres (fugue, concerto grosso, sonata, etc) in the same way music has genres today (rock, jazz, classical). Not that Baroque fugue is equivalent in some way to rock, aside from the fact that it fits a contemporary genre of its period the same way Elvis fits a genre of our period.

I guess however by my own thought here You have your own opinion, its to bad you have chosen to be an ass about it.
tinroofbusted 2 years ago
JUST BLOODY ENJOY THE MUSIC ALREADY. Its for everybody and no-one.
It was written as a persons en-bodyment of joy and nothing else.
tinroofbusted 2 years ago
Feels like I'm dealing with a fight between my two teenage boys the only difference is they are not talking about who has the bigger dick but who has the bigger music know-how. Makes me sick to think that people that listen to music haven't a clue how to appriciate others opinion about it and respect that opinion without thinking its an insult to their own Ideals. The world is bad enough without using musical opinions as yet another way to insult each other. WOW, I need a ticket off this ride.
tinroofbusted 2 years ago
Is anyone just listening to the music and enjoying it here, or are you all bunch of know it alls. Please for the rest of us, get off the pot and let us enjoy this fine music. Good heavens what's the fuss all about anyway?. don't give me " He said it first "or I might have to call you busted. Just enjoy the music. Hells Bells music is for everyone and it does not have an opinion. It's just played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GADS.
