julzzzybaby is right, but in some parts of the states (such as the entire city of chicago, where i grew up), there's no "middle school" business -- grade school is K-8 and high school is 9-12. nice and simple, like it is in australia apparently :)

In my district, K-4 is Elementary, 5-8 is Middle School, and 9-12 is High School. I know a lot of people have already clarified, but also, Freshman year (my year right now) is 9th, Sophomore is 10, Junior is 11, and Senior is 12.

in canada we have jounior kindergarden (JK) age 4 and senior kindergarden (SK) age 5 then we have elementary school grades 1-8 then high school grades 9-12

in high school we dont have freshmans or sophmores: grades 9 and 10s are jouniors and grades 11 and 12 are seniors :)

In the state I live in is slightly different than the person who posted earlier. Every state is slightly different I have noticed.

3 year old class and preschool, usually private school

kindergarten-4th sometimes 5th depending upon the school, Elementary(Grade) school

sometimes 5th-8th middle school/ Jr. high

9-12 high school and as stated above Freshmen-9th sophomore-10 junior-11 senior-12

It is confusing sometimes even to me. It is constantly changing. Glad I'm done with that mess.

Yeah, you got it right, year seven is the start of high school here. :) In NSW we start when we're 5 turning six. Kindergarten to year six is primary, and year seven to year twelve is high school.

hello! i'm from the states haha

our schooling system:

pre-kindergarten + kindergarten (ages 4-5)

1st-5th is grade school (ages 6-10)

6th-8th is middle school (ages 11-13)

9th-12th is high school (ages 14-17)...the ages can range a bit.

9th=freshman year, 10th=sophomore [sof-more] year, 11th=junior year, 12th=senior year
