  • This has really helped me because I have got my grade on sunday for my blue belt and I dont know my kata, Pinan Shodan. Once againg thanks

  • itssssssss fakeeeeeeee

  • this was pinan shodan as taught by sensei wally maclean in the box hill dojo to me as close as i can remember i remember wally giving more depth of undertanding to the kia

as if understood the perfect balance between warrior and peace between love and fear

  • at 0:12, he stays in mahamni nekoashi dachi, but isn't he supposed to start in mahamni and then switch to hamni nekoashi dachi? Furthermore, where i train Wado Ryu (in the Netherlands) the KBN (Karate Bond Nederland) says that the angle between the foot in front and the other foot must be more then 90 degrees. But here this mister Bayliss has his feet in an angle of 90 degrees. Is that a different rule or is this 'bullshido'?

  • thats our pinan nidan

  • theres no power on his knife hand blocks..what style is this?

  • @shorinryuful Please, don't blame the style, blame this "black belt". If you practice karate you ought to know how much bullshido is around youtube.

  • @TheMonkRS Bullshido? that's a new word for me. What i mostly hear is mcdojo but bullshido is also a good one;p

  • I thought the knife hand blocks are supposed to be shoulder height O.o

  • @narlydude514 Nowp.

if you want it to be the most effective well then yeah, neck strike but for kata its not about the most effective. it's showing the move and the chudan looks a lot better

  • You chamber.

  • the big finger is wrong!!!

  • we call this pinan shodan..in the phillipines.. i think we are only the club who perform the okinawan style..all the rest are shotokan..also in shotokan..the call it basai dai..in okinawan style..if i'm not mistaken they call it passai dai..unfortunately our club are not active now..

  • what the .. can anyone call any of those leg techniques kicks? or just flappy lower limbs?

  • Great video, very clear and good lighting from a technical point of view.

Regaring the Kata alot of commentors forget this is in Wado Ryu style and yes Pinan Shodan is the first Kata in Wado Ryu although some schools have switched to teaching Pinan Nidan first.

    thanks for posting

  • yes it's pinan shodan in wado ryu. but it's not the first kata we learn as pinan nidan is the first one.. even if the name says SHODAN (1st) NIDAN (second).. other styles call this PINAN NIDAN..

  • Yet it IS Wado-ryu Pinan Shodan. One of most orthodox youtube representations of it, I would say. Shotokan (and every other sensei with Shotokan background) does have Nidan and Shodan switched though.

  • this is not penan shodan

  • omg omg that is totally a squash court.!!! looks like the friary actually, but probably all squash courts look the same.

  • ????????? I thought he was a black belt, so why is it that his outside block higher than his shoulder?

  • @eevee4ever4life Perhaps because he's doing it jodan, which is how most schools of wado-ryu practice this kata.

  • I have this in my next grading! Hope I'm that good on the day.

  • This looks more like Pinan Nidan than Shodan.

  • Some styles switched the names of the pinans nidan and shodan over.

Shotokan I know names pinan shodan as heian nidan and vice versa... all the styles are different.

  • best kata i have seen on youtube

  • very well done congratulation's o proberly the best kata of pinan shodan iv'e seen on youtube. the last guy i looked at, his stances and moves was 99.9% incorrect but you're very good well done

  • hi ,Can i ask if you train with bob taylor in wado-ryu or one of his instructors,Why i ask is your u-tube name.

    Thanks

  • people sure do come out with some crap about karate on here :P too mechanical? no cat stance? there was no stance wrong lol and who said they have a yellow band and can do better? you clearly have no respect and no disipline to make such an accusation to someone with a higher grade... i'm a 1st dan and even if i thought i saw something wrong with this kata... i don't have the right to correct him due to grade :P

  • Very nicely done Sensei.

  • about 2nd kyu level

  • go mick go i'll still train with you

  • what style is this? its rather robotic, wado-kai is meant to be smooth and natural.

  • In my opinion its easy to point out what he has done wrong and so forth but some people fail to see that each martial arts Dojo modifies many kata's. For instance in mine we always teach our students that the first thing that moves in all the Pinan's is the right foot but Sensei Mick doesn't. Its all in the systems and how they vary from one another.

Oh i liked it by the way i forgot to mention that tehe bit mechanical and so forth but it's one of my fave kata's. XD

    ~*~ Tex

  • he doing his stances wrong for Ryu Kyu Kenpo at least the stances are supossed to be cat

  • even with my yellow band i cna do better....

  • i agree my sensei makes sure we are doing the moves correctly, to stop any bad habbits.

  • too mechanical. yes it looks good as a basis for learning the moves but there is no technique. Theres no feeling in his movements and doesnt look like hes actually fighting anyone, Which a kata should be a living thing and should be treated accordinly.

  • I don't like his interpretation that much. His hara is high and it's his hands performing, not the whole body supporting.

Movements are precise, but it's also mechanical, without purpose. He'd probably gain from the feedback I got after graduating Shodan: "form is good, emphasize now the meaning"

It's always dangerous to post a video, 'cos Wado is matter of interpretation. I'll try to do a reply to demo the differences so I'd differ from other commentors to actually stand behind my words.

  • Not bat... but:

    - He says the Kata's name after "Yoi"... It should be before.

    - His feets on "soto uke" (or "shoto uke", I don't remember) are wrong... the heels of the foward foott cannot touch the ground.

    - When he punches, his heels goes up... that means that he's using his shoulders to put power on the movement... that is wrong...

Besides that, It is a good performance...

  • Name of the technique is jodan shuto uke (head-level spearhand block) and the pose is mahanmi no nekoashi dachi (side-facing cat-foot stance).

These are only superficial issues, front foot heel up or down is irrelevant. What matters more is the whole body behind the technique, hands are just the extension that will touch the opponent.

  • very articulate you are

  • que mal lo haces no tienes ni puta idea very bad

  • nice one Mick

  • Great!!

  • All I can say is thats how it should be done well done Sensei

  • put one up yourself if you are so knowledgeable

  • I've seen better before.

  • what about after

  • before what
