alright so i have a SSD but it honestly feels like a HDD.... its kinda slow and not the performance i expected.... idk what i should do, should i format it or what.... i got my macbook pro used on ebay and it came with 8gb of ram and a 160 gb Intel SSD
they should've made the sad standard for the 2300 i paid for this laptop... but it's the best computer i've ever owned so i'm not complaining. anyway, i want a 512GB SSD. here's the deal. i don't care if i lose anything, and would rather do a clean install anyway. how can i do a fresh install on the macbook with the new drive if there's no install disc? also, will the computer even turn on without an operating system to boot to?
What One is the HDD And the SSD and this is Funny because im researching about the MacBook and im doing it with the ipad2 and you Know the MacBook and ipad2 are both from apple
so by what it sounds like, ssd's are worth it. Im getting 16 Gb ram for my Macbook pro (15 inch) that i just got. I am looking to make it even faster thought. My parrens (im 13) will get me it if you people actually think its worth it.
@visualprogrammer well if you can use windows 7 64 bit for the programming then yeah it's worth it you can install windows 7 (any type ex: home professional) on a separate partition using bootcamp which is a built in application that guide you though installation. (I don't think you need help though) You can even have the whole hard drive formated for windows if you want but I don't recommend it.
I've have a question, i was thinking about buying the mac airbook 15 inch (student class). But apperently i just heard from my friend it won't be so handy because we all we be programming in windows. but then i tough is that a real problem? can't i just run windows virtually on mac and program - there while i'm following the lessons?
so what do you guys think is best for me? while i'm continuing in this 'programming-world'
Well, I got my 256GB SSD coming in my new Macbook Pro, and I'm leaving the old HDD in the past. Eventually, all HDD will be obsolete, and I don't want to have to worry about my hard drive crashing or failing. Plus, lots of energy savings and faster booting times.
IMHO... SSDs are perfect in every way! its just that i think that they are too expensive at the moment... ill buy one as soon as the prices drop a little :)
for me, SSD is worth it.. the only expect one thing from a notebook, performance. no one wants a crappy super slow notebook. i bought an SSD to replace my old HDD in my MBW. i swear to God it was one of the best decision in my life. sure, it's expensive, but it really really improve the performance up to 2 - 3x faster.
Bottom line, SSD ARE NOT WORTH IT!!!! Boot up is the only place you will be WOW'ed when it comes to the difference in speed. Every where else is simply not a big enough difference for space + money. I mean its really simply math here. Gain speed loss space and money..... 1 is better than 2.... no. Esp. when the difference on an app start up is 80% the time less than 3 seconds... its NOT WORTH IT!!!
@rangerbill06 haha to be honest there are people like me that almost throw their computer at the wall because the extra time on boot up drives us crazy. I don't want to wait for my machine, it should wait for me because it's costing ME money, not the other way around.
When I can get a 256gig SSD for under 200 bucks, I'll be convinced.
At this point, spending 400 dollars for something with pathetic memory is not a good investment for me, considering you can get 2 terabyte drives for 1/4 of the price(20x's the memory)
@ISJHman44 certainly. you only need it for the core os and basic programs. use the external hdd (yes there are two d's in "disk drive") for large media files. in my case I plan to use my 1tb external hdd via my shared network. if I leave my wireless network then I will have to utilize portable external storage for significant media access. I will likely have compatible thunderbolt or firewire 800 peripherals for this purpose
@wackoguywatch too true. I don't have one since I can't afford it but all I've been hearing about SSD upgrades are great things. Cant wait to get one :)
@wackoguywatch or people that want greater capacity. it is not about cost it is about cost effectiveness. I agree that the ssd is vastly superior but the sad part is that in most cases an external hdd is a requirement if you want access to large media files
Yes that's what I meant (capacity). But like I said, solid state is definetly the future as it can only come down in price. I have no idea how spinning disk drives will continue to grow in size. I mean we're up to 4TB in a single brick unit now I think.
I edit lots of video and keep duplicate backups all the time so I need storaaaage.
@ashfi1994 Is he booting here? You're a blind hopeless fool.
HE JUST SHOWED YOU THAT IT SPEEDS UP LAUNCHING APPLICATIONS TOO.
I'm not sure if you launch applications on your computer very often... but I'm willing to bet that's why you bought it. So, perhaps you should stop spewing shit from your mouth-hole and quit spewing words from your asshole.
I guess you're one of the jealous ones who just can't afford an SSD right now. Sucks to be you.
@dinjin201 What the hell are you replying to?? I posted a comment as a response to someone else.
It's not worth the extra money. I already have an SSD hard drive in my portable laptop. However, I used to have a Dell Xps m1730 with two 7200rom hard drives set in Raid 0. Like I said, not worth it.
@wackoguywatch yeah, you're right but then at the same time, the only reason why I wouldn't want to get SSD right now on a laptop is cause of the amount of space. SSD are not big enough yet. so I'd rather get the 750GB instead of 512SSD
@wackoguywatch so you laugh in their face as they laugh in yours. That doesn't make you different or wiser person, even tho you can afford it. Isn't it?
@wackoguywatch maybe those people didn't realize the benefit, say each load you save 4 seconds, you do ~100 loads everyday, that 365x100x4 = 146000 sec = 40.54 hrs = 5.07 working days. That means, you can have a full week out of a year.
SSD worths everything. Faster loading, faster booting, quieter, energy saving, shock resistance, less weight and most important less damage to the battery life.
After repeated use and erasing files/programs installing them and all sorts of stuff as such the ssd slows down to the hdd speed

The only two down points about an SSD is the pricing and the space. I'm sure the many other factors will more than compensate for that.

What's the point putting a SSD in a piece of overpriced trash ?
People talking about next-gen drives and using a trash computer... kinda contradictory.
