  • the book is 10000 times better than this

  • I WANT TO READ THE BOOK!!!

  • meaningful movie for those who can think.

years have past... humans are still stupid... only clothes have changed...

    sad just sad..

  • @DoubtFuLBrain A dash pretentious

  • Anyone knows a movie similar to this? I mean in atmosphere, not necessarily in plot.

  • @LCxCZ Kingdom of Heaven, but make sure you watch the director's cut. There's such a HUGE difference between the normal and director's cut. I watched the normal one in theatre and hated it, it was absolutely crap, shallow and meaningless. Virtually all the good parts were cut and Ridley Scott didn't even like that version.

I was really surprised when watching the Director's Cut. It's a much deeper and more meaningful movie, and has become one of my favourites.

  • If you like this type in Cadfael on the search and watch the series its just like this.

  • Slater as a kid..priceless

  • The scenery and atmosphere of this film for its time period is virtually unmatched.

  • @robotpanda77 One of the best movies I have EVERY seen. Much better than the novel. Someone mentioned ten times better than the Da Vinci Code. Youbet! DVC was a fragmented bunch of half-assed ideas all strung together. The only things holding DVC together were the sprocket holes in the film. :)

  • @Glinkaism1 I agree.Even if till now I never thought that a film was better than a book.EVER.But here is an exception. But the book was a masterpiece too. I just love Umberto Eco.He is a great writer.*happy sigh*.We are lucky to have him.

  • @teanicolae Looking at the where the money came from in the credits, the biggest feat was to get financing from several film commissions. That was real magic! The moviemakers built the front of the monastery. So many great details in this movie. I especially liked the labyrinth.

  • Best realization of Medieval times in Cinema ever.

  • Ah man I totally forgot about this movie! I didn't even watch it in eglish yet

  • there is actually a place called the name of rose, it's pretty beautiful

  • sean connery is the men here!

  • in the book the castel is 2 hour from my home, very cool place..

  • "With some difficulty." The classic Mr. Cool response.

  • Please, can anybody tell me if was there an antique chinese movie about similar crimes in a monastery?I could swear I have seen it in tv about 1980, and it seemed a 60's movie

  • @yeatsrilke quite possibly. Eco makes no secret of being a bit of a cultural magpie. There's one part of the novel that is almost a direct lift from Zadig by Voltaire. He also gives hints toward people that inspired his novel, William of Baskerville (connery) is named after William of Ockham with a nod to Sherlock Holmes. And so on...

  • @wungabunga thanks. I think I´ve found the original: the dutch chinese expert Robert van Gulik´s "The enchanted monastery" or like. Could somebody say something about it?

  • Wonderful film and very atmospheric! The interior scenes were filmed at the Eberbach Abbey in Germany. I want to read the book now.

  • was this movie famous???

  • One of the best movie adaptation I´ve ever seen..

  • @brupass please, tell me if you know something about a previous chinese movie with similar plot? I respect so much Umberto Eco, but we must know if he inspired in other argument.

  • Anyone with the Labyrinth on vhs or lasersdisc will remember this trailer! Love it!

  • I;m reading the book...great!!!

  • such a good movie

    i love it

  • the movie is very impressive, but like AlienForReal said: the book is not that dark, I personally like the book more, it's a great book by a great author:))

  • I love this film

I saw in a class of History .

    I love it!

  • i love this movie

  • i finished reading this book recently, then i wantedto watch movie, then i saw trailer and changed my mind. Book is not that dark and those monks from movie look like they escaped asylum

  • yeah very smart reading hahahah

well very interesting book and great film too!!!!!!

  • l'un des grands roles de sean connery et tres bon thriller

  • bon film j essairai de lire le livre cette ete

  • Le film est très bon mais le livre est cent fois meilleur.

  • *****

  • the music is so fucking scary ^^

  • great book, great movie, great actors!

  • @meYry12thofMay87 Pretty good game too.

  • @jrg8008 Boardgame, that is.

  • i have the book and it is as good as the movie

    and i havent see it

  • Ron Perlman is a genius

  • Such great acting performances here. You can never go wrong with Michael Lonsdale as the Abbott.I recommend him in The Day of the Jackal,Ronin, and Munich.

Ron Perlman-Hellboy- as the Hunchback in his greatest performance. Then there's William Hickey as Ubertino da Casale, and Feodor Chaliapin Jr as Jorge de Burgos.

The film should be dedicated to Helmut Qualtinger, who played the monk burned with hunchback. He died shortly after the film shooting wrapped.

  • that s like da vinci code but ten times better

  • no........ it's a little different

  • @bhdjdnkjnjcjcncjk i would say 100

  • @bhdjdnkjnjcjcncjk da vinci code is trash, this movie is fantastic.

  • @bhdjdnkjnjcjcncjk

    1000 times better, IMHO.

  • looks great !

  • Umberto Eco has 333 Honorary doctorates. I'm not exhagerating.

  • we are watching this movie on school yesterday

    [my english is very bad]

  • I'm also going to see this movie tomorrow in mij history class

  • a great book,for a mediocre film.

  • Wow, you must have high standards for films.

  • no I dont.anyway I think the director was too much involved to find church, cathedrals or extra(actors) instead of rapresent the real meaning of the book and his multifaceted key of reading.

  • I just stumbled over it on a swedish film-channel a couple of months ago and it's my favourite film ever.

I went from.. Warner Bros productions (no offence) to this.

    THANK YOU.

    and Sean is excellent :)

  • I read the book and it's great... I agree with u guys, ECO is a GENIUS!!! the movie is also great and Sean Connery was ideal for playing William of Baskerville.

  • Whoever thinks this movie has an anti-christian message is wrong. It has an anti-fanatical message. Christianity is okay when practiced in moderation, just like drinking...both of them being very bad for the thinking and reasoning Brain. Since most of humanity prefers to Supress the Brain, then Religion will unfortunately prevail.

  • lol. it's true what the author meant by "the name of the rose". after reading the book 6 years ago, I can only remember the name, the description. that's all we are left with at the end. Umberto Ecco is a genius.

  • Just finished reading the book, will watch the dvd in time, good story all the same!

  • this film has got the best music ever!!!!!

  • This movie is my all time favorite. And the brilliant score composed by James Horner. It gives me goosebumps.

  • We're watching it with history!

  • I'm also watching this for history, except it is for extra credit to write a paper about the film and what happened during the time....

I saw it once before, and it is amazing! Highly recommended to anyone interested in historical dramas/mysteries...

  • Nope, nothing to do without it

  • You are an IGNORANT.

  • No. It's more like a very stylish and atmospheric Sherlock Holmes mystery movie set in the 1300's, with IMO an anti-christian message. Easily one of my favorites of all time.

  • well, mister...

you are the most idiotic being God has ever put on earth.

  • This was an excellent movie! :)

  • I'm goingt o see this movie in my phylosophy calls tomorrow and I can't wait. Thanks for putting this up. Loocks godd.

    :)

  • My favourite movie of all time, and Slater is perfect as Connery's apprentice :)

  • excellent movie.one of my favorite

  • Me encanta esta peli :)

  • Excellent movie. One of Connery's best performances.

  • ohhh wanna watch this move, must be great!!!!

love the book though :D thanks for posting

  • A great book, a great writer, a great film..
