@LCxCZ Kingdom of Heaven, but make sure you watch the director's cut. There's such a HUGE difference between the normal and director's cut. I watched the normal one in theatre and hated it, it was absolutely crap, shallow and meaningless. Virtually all the good parts were cut and Ridley Scott didn't even like that version.
I was really surprised when watching the Director's Cut. It's a much deeper and more meaningful movie, and has become one of my favourites.
@robotpanda77 One of the best movies I have EVERY seen. Much better than the novel. Someone mentioned ten times better than the Da Vinci Code. Youbet! DVC was a fragmented bunch of half-assed ideas all strung together. The only things holding DVC together were the sprocket holes in the film. :)
@Glinkaism1 I agree.Even if till now I never thought that a film was better than a book.EVER.But here is an exception. But the book was a masterpiece too. I just love Umberto Eco.He is a great writer.*happy sigh*.We are lucky to have him.
@teanicolae Looking at the where the money came from in the credits, the biggest feat was to get financing from several film commissions. That was real magic! The moviemakers built the front of the monastery. So many great details in this movie. I especially liked the labyrinth.
Please, can anybody tell me if was there an antique chinese movie about similar crimes in a monastery?I could swear I have seen it in tv about 1980, and it seemed a 60's movie
@yeatsrilke quite possibly. Eco makes no secret of being a bit of a cultural magpie. There's one part of the novel that is almost a direct lift from Zadig by Voltaire. He also gives hints toward people that inspired his novel, William of Baskerville (connery) is named after William of Ockham with a nod to Sherlock Holmes. And so on...
@wungabunga thanks. I think I´ve found the original: the dutch chinese expert Robert van Gulik´s "The enchanted monastery" or like. Could somebody say something about it?
@brupass please, tell me if you know something about a previous chinese movie with similar plot? I respect so much Umberto Eco, but we must know if he inspired in other argument.
the movie is very impressive, but like AlienForReal said: the book is not that dark, I personally like the book more, it's a great book by a great author:))
i finished reading this book recently, then i wantedto watch movie, then i saw trailer and changed my mind. Book is not that dark and those monks from movie look like they escaped asylum
Such great acting performances here. You can never go wrong with Michael Lonsdale as the Abbott.I recommend him in The Day of the Jackal,Ronin, and Munich.
Ron Perlman-Hellboy- as the Hunchback in his greatest performance. Then there's William Hickey as Ubertino da Casale, and Feodor Chaliapin Jr as Jorge de Burgos.
The film should be dedicated to Helmut Qualtinger, who played the monk burned with hunchback. He died shortly after the film shooting wrapped.
no I dont.anyway I think the director was too much involved to find church, cathedrals or extra(actors) instead of rapresent the real meaning of the book and his multifaceted key of reading.
I read the book and it's great... I agree with u guys, ECO is a GENIUS!!! the movie is also great and Sean Connery was ideal for playing William of Baskerville.
Whoever thinks this movie has an anti-christian message is wrong. It has an anti-fanatical message. Christianity is okay when practiced in moderation, just like drinking...both of them being very bad for the thinking and reasoning Brain. Since most of humanity prefers to Supress the Brain, then Religion will unfortunately prevail.
lol. it's true what the author meant by "the name of the rose". after reading the book 6 years ago, I can only remember the name, the description. that's all we are left with at the end. Umberto Ecco is a genius.
No. It's more like a very stylish and atmospheric Sherlock Holmes mystery movie set in the 1300's, with IMO an anti-christian message. Easily one of my favorites of all time.
the book is 10000 times better than this
