1 he had the wiring all messed up so cud i get a pic of your wiring diagram im good with the soldering iron
2 my 89 seems to have more output than the 81 by output i mean sound or volume ....is it supposed to be that way im thinkin something is wrong with the wiring .....
3 would u recommend an 18volt series connection system or not
i'm thinking of changing the neck pickup on my guitar, please help me choose, i'm between an emg 60 or emg 89, please let me know which i should get, thanks!
Nice demonstration! I'm thinking of installing an emg 89 in neck position, and I heard that there is a reversed version of this pickup called 89r, where the single-coil part of the pickup is closer to the neck. Which one is better in your opinion for the neck; the ordinary or the reversed one? thx a lot!
u got skills. ur guitar is amazing. but i think its time for a new amp. and try a BOSS NS-2. if ur noise suppressor doesnt work that one should it helped with some of the worst amp noise problems i've ever heard.
ok good player one complante u should realy shield ur guitar from the cavity with coper foil or just plain old foil so u can stop the humming u get on ur guitar when u stop playing
@2miguel34 My guitar's control cavity is 100% shielded with adheasive backed copper foil. My mark III is just nosie. Even with a noise suppressor the amp still had audiable ambient hum.
@jarledge nice dude i really like the 81 and 89,, i actually changed mine to 81 85s for a richer warmer sound, and i cant decide if i like them, the classic 81 i think is a little hotter than the 81tw but not enough to make a huge difference (or to just cover up with a peddle), and the 85 in my opinion lacks a lot of versatility and is flat when it comes to its cleans, i think im probably going to put my old ones back in i cant decide haha
@panhulio i am guessing you asked that because of my watch. No i am right handed , i have always just worn my watch on right wrist. On that note to any leftys out there try to start out on a right handed from the get go. Lefty guitars are more expensive and not every right hand guitar has a left handed counterpart. It may be a little difficult at first but it will save you money and give you more options in the long run
@jarledge Sorry dude, but i disagree. I am left-handed guitar player and its nearly impossible to play like right-handed. Trust me, you have that felling in the left hand and you can´t just transfer it into the other one. Its somewhere there in your head. And these days there is no problem choosing good guitar even for left-handed player. Of course, lefty : righty guitars is like 1 : 1000 but you can still find one which suits you. Fx. I have bought Schecter hellraiser C-1 now, it suits me well.
@MetalGuruSvk that actually the same guitar im thinking about getting. but it is a lot harder to find guitars for left handed people. my brother is left handed and he says it is a lot harder to find lefty guitars because there is a much smaller amount made
depends on how much frets your neck has got and what sound you wanna get. the 89 in single coil mode more sounds like the middle position pickup on a strat, especially when your guitar has 24 frets, whereas the 89r more sound like the neck position of a strat, especially on a 22 fret neck...
Very good demo.. I wonder if you mind telling me where you got the custom guitar neck? Or did you say that? I thought I heard that at the beggining? Anyway, killer demo man! I'm trying to figure out what to put in my custom strat I built. I have 3 Lace Sensors now which I really like, but I play metal and blues and need something for both.. I'm thinking of the 85 in the bridge and the SA in the neck, but if I get a 89 I can have two humbuckers or a single coil in the neck.. Thanks man..
how about EMG X's? I heard news about Duncan active that is more pleasant which mix the wood/body in its p.u tone, kinda passive p.u. if it so....then yes it is Good p.u.
My opinion....EMG is very distinct in its sound (like it, it cuts thru mix), main thing that sets its tone is the amp we use to feed it....there is LESS wood/body/gtr-timbre inside its tone.
What if.....my opinion is more preferable to put the 81 in the bridge & 89 in neck pos.
So if I change it so that the 89 in the bridge.....as far as i'm concern....it is not appropriate (Yes, there is no rule) bcause of 81 is way more Aggressive while 89 warmth.
xcuse me...I have this question if anyone can help me out: I have 81 in Bridge & 89 in neck position...why I can not get the EVEN tone i want between those two, the 89 is higher in level. Is it because of the Warmth of the Alnico magnet og 89...if it is...so, there is no way to even the volume between those two???!!
81 has very little difference to the 85 when it comes to output, emg 81 has a 89db output and a 85 has 91db, it you wanna big margin try the emg 89 in the bridge and 81 in the neck
they differ in volume due to the 89 being a split coil. the humbucker mode will be way more loud than it is as a single coil. You could try a simple booster to even the tone out. I use a little DOD compressor for mine.
what K pots do you have in your guitar? your supose to have all 25k pots for emg pickups, reason i ask is because i asked my guitar tech what if i used my old 250k pots? he replied with with 250k pots it would give the pots a more on off sorta thing, where as 25k are more suited. other then that maybe your pots are wired wrong, ive had that problem also, id take it for service with your local tech
the 89 is an 85 with a coil tap option and yes the 85 actually does have a little more output because of the way the alnico magnet changes the tonal responce. The 85 is thicker and drives a little harder were as the 81 has more highs and cut.
I play Pantera, Tool, Metallica all that stuff. Im thinking about doing what you did with putting those two pickups into my Dean ML but I have passive pickups in it. will this still work?
yeah dude, they'll fit...unless you have a 7-string the emg's should go right in...Just change the pots to the 25k instead of the 500k you probably have in your ml right now.
im kinda replying to this a little late but yea it will work it will just cost a fair amount of money.they will have to change ur pots because the pots for passive pickups will not work for active pickups because of the output level. also with the battery they will probably have to hollow out some wood on the back of ur guitar to make changing the battery easy. however, i have a Dean Dimebolt and i was talkin to a guy at a local store about it and he said hollowing out wood might decrease tone
thats true, its alot of work to switch from passive to active PU's, but its not like active pickup offer WAY more tone if your runnign them through a solid state amp anyways
yea but when you use active emg's, it almost has nothing to do with the wood, like you could play emgs in a cereal box and it would almost sound the same lmfao, (just kidding)
ermm decreasing the tone, its poosable but not by much, but then you could try help with the sound of the guitar by copper sheilding.
ive just had emgs changed from passive, yeah its like a worms wedding replacing everything, pots wires and stuff but worth it in the end in my opinion in your guitar has the space to fit everything
i was wondering if ur happy with the overall combination of these pups. its a bit of a weird combo, but the guitar that im lookin at buyin has this combo. so i was goin to ask someone before i made up my mind.
yeah it is a 2 way switch single pole double throw (spdt) switch. You can get them at smallbearelec....com or at your local radio shack. I use the 2 ways switches because they don't wear out like a 3 way and i never used the middle position. You could use spst or spdt switches as on/off switches which would be more more versital. check out my steve morse Dimarzio video for using DPDT switches for series parallel and SPDT switch for adding my bridge pickup to any position selected.
I personally like the 85/89 over the 81. The 85 is a little warmer and has a more full sound. If your looking to go active i had a chance to play the seymour duncan livewire mustaine set and i though the duncans were superior in every way compared to the Emgs i have played and owned. I have had and played many duncans and havn't liked any of them, however the livewire set was exceptional. I would check out the Duncan blackouts.A lot of Emg users have switched to them and there has to be a reason
Hmm...I have the 81/89 combos and I want the blackouts, but I don't know why. Everyone keeps on telling me to get them, but I don't know what the difference is. Then the guitarcenter guy said the blackouts are based on the EMG's so now I'm so confused. Would you make the switch? I already have an EQ, but I'm still tempted...
