  • RIP Sidewiki

  • What is Sidewiki? Is it the same as Wikipedia?

  • This was one of my favorite Google Tools!

A real revolution for the web

Why Google decided to stop it?

Maybe I have myself an answer:

Sites owner are not happy of this tool, they want to control comments, to manipulate it, to censure it. A lot of them started a war campaign against SideWiki, claiming that it would be targeted by spammers.

But why should you be scared of such a project if you have nothing to hide?

Even negative-untrue comments are unmasked if not supported by the community.

  • @kenilchattiero Because stupid and selfish people want to controle comment and moderate it. They want that only THEIR truth can be visible for other.

    Tips side wiki+pourquoi on google.

  • @kenilchattiero sorry type: "why sidewiki is dead?" and see.

  • @Angel070385 you mean cause they started google + ?

    sidewiki was different!

  • Respond to this video...

  • sidewiki is dead. RIP

  • @eletiy I am really disappointed for it!

It was a real positive tool to help people have freedom of speech!

  • Funny... How they're using Firefox!

  • thank

  • Its being nice experience!

  • is there a hotkey to activate sidewiki with the chrome extension?

  • There needs to be some form of control without censorship. Something that measures the quality of a contribution or contributor in a way that can't be easily abrogated.

  • رااائعه الخدمه

  • Fantastico, lleva la web a otro nivel

  • هااااااااااي

  • Thank U Mr/ sidewiki . Laila Boctor

  • i find it annoying... just disabled it. jumps my screen around way too much. sorry but that's why.

  • Sidewiki is very important to the web especially to people don't really understand what they can get while browsing. It must be advertise to all browser for info....

  • Hopefully there is some way for google to monitor the use and abuse of this technology. The only reason that Wikipedia still functions is because they have people dedicated to beating internet vandals. If google is not committed to doing the same thing, this will fail miserably.

  • I've always wanted to be able to take notes on web pages, like the way you can write in the margin of a book. I'm not so sure about people sharing those ideas with everyone else. Alot of comment areas (esp YouTube) are filled with crap from lesser minds. On the other hand, sidewiki is supposed to have a rating system to let the best stuff bubble up to the top...

  • 2013, introduction the sidekiwi, it's just awesome.

  • get a google wave invite off ebay!

  • I stand corrected and apologize to Google. I didn't realize that Sidwiki was published before OpenComments, so I guess they have precedence. Still, I think OpenComments is superior, in part because it supports full conversations: if I disagree with a Sidewiki post, all I can do is post a separate comment, not a reply to the original poster. With OpenComments, I can reply.

  • @FractalBob Umm... cant you just go @[username] [messsege] ?

  • So if Google copies it, it's a ripoff, if OpenComments copies it, it's ok?

And why would it be wrong if Google copied it anyway? Are you agaisnt new products? Would you like there to be only one brand of TVs, with no choice, no freedom? Guess so.

  • I guess you didn't see my remark of a month ago.

  • Nice, but what's the difference with Crabzy ? Complementary maybe...

  • No, Crabzy is totally different: it's just another forum, whereas Sidewiki and OpenComments enable EVERYONE visiting a site to see everyone else's posts. In the case of OpenComments, you can have conversations, as well.

  • Thuis is crazy, just discoverd this. Is there any way to stop people from trash talk about my business ? You must stop this !!

  • Best way to keep people from talking trash about your business is to treat customers well. Don't fear change. Knowledge is power.

  • I have no problem at all with my customers, it is my competitors that talk trash.

I gusess you don't run a business online så it's easy to be foolish and talk about not fear changes, this change is bad for everybody. Exept for all thoes Internet trolls.

  • @JustSay9 Probably the best comment I've seen on Youtube so far.

  • I HATE IT !!!!!!!!! and I got rid of it just another distraction and it is useless

  • how do i turn this sidewiki crap off? i just got it introduced and its in the way of my full browser... someone pleaaassseee send me a return comment with the answer, because its annoying the shit out of me

  • @DaxB92 If you have FireFox just disable or delete the Add-on. If you got Google Chrome same thing.

  • worst product ever, i want to control my content and CHOOSE not to have comments on the pages. As an expert i want to inform my customers with my expertise about my products, not what people on the internet say.. and also give my competitors te change to talk trash about me without any control ? GOOGLE STOP THIS NONSENSE NOW!!!!

  • There is no reason to hate on this. There are cons with everything but I would think that the google folks are bright enough to have considered them, and have plans on how to address them.

  • It's funny how you cant use this on the Crome browser..

  • @tommyrold You can now :)

  • ow thanks:)

  • Yes you can

  • Looks like Google's owners are keeping up their attempts to socially engineer the world into being a more positive-orientated, collaborative place. So note - not ever conspiracy plot from the elites is bad...

  • Only for Windows?! Bad form, Google, bad form >=(

  • It support all the browsers.

  • @dsmashh could also be used for good...

  • Nice ripoff of ReframeIt.

  • This is so going to be targeted by spammers and trolls, not to mention the website owners themselves

  • We all know Wikipedians pick and chose the biased and sometimes very deceitful info. This ability is going to be a wild ride of potential sabotage. Competitors are now free to trash any other sight with all kinds of either bogus or truthful info. Just another warning to not believe everything you read. Now the intellectually challenged have more fodder of which to believe and spread as truth. Don't believe what you read without a proof source.

  • would have thought it would have been for chrome before ie or firefox now i have to wait

  • Does Sidewiki have its umpires - like the team of Wikipedians who make some decisions to eliminate certain contributions as inappropriate. This video shows how to use Sidewiki and if there's stuff about it's behind the scenes support, I've missed it.

  • Of we all know what the next challenge Google is eager to on-take, which is Google's very own Operating System!!! Please Google if you want to really want to be the fat guy sitting between the 2 skinny guys make sure you make it universally compatible for all versions of all software and make it consumer happy!

  • I have to say a cool of an idea as this is, it is the worst idea I have seen in a while. If I was an unscrupulous vendor my expert advice would be to visit my my site!

I agree with MrSaxman1973 & rosemarykwest freedom of speech DOES NOT extend to trashing my site with a competitors ad.

  • Thank god I created a Block SideWiki script because this new tool can be one of the worst ever created for spammers and competition to post alongside your website and leave their links stealing your visitors and customers.

  • You are far off the browsers, you used firefox! Not google chrome... makes me think like your not google. LOL

  • This is not about "free speech", which simply means the government can't tell you not to express opinions. In the modern world, you can exercise this right endlessly, publishing a blog or or website, printing newsletters, putting a message on billboards, talking to people, giving a public lecture, etc. Freedom of speech does not include the right to go into someone's house and curse at their children, or paint graffiti on a building, or plaster your ads all over someone else's website.

  • Even though that's what you do when you unknowingly call a 6 year old a dumbass on Youtube, the way I see it, you should treat the people of the virtual world as you would the real world, never know what comment you lash out that could send a person to their suicide

  • "What if you could easily contribute to any web page and help others?" Translated: "What if you could easily trash any web page and harm others?" This is disgusting.

  • Erm, what is your argument here?

  • Do you even know how wikis work? Shut up.

  • yeah right, everybody does that on youtube too, but youtube is still a good place!!!!

  • Those talking about "Freedom of Speech". This has nothing to do with YOUR speech. It has to do with the website owners Freedom of Speech. You need to be a website owner to really understand. We assemble websites the way we do on purpose. To provide info and services that YES, make us money, but its our money that we are putting on the line & our decision on how to use it. SideWiki is taking that away by enabling random users the ability to direct visitors ($) away from our investments! "EVIL"!!!

  • @MrSaxman1973 If you have nothing to hide, why are you afraid of comments? In real life you are also free to comment stuff, if you walk on front of a building you are free to talk to someone and say: "what a beautiful place" or "what an ugly architecture" why should you not be allowed to do it on the web?

There is also the possibility to vote comments and report it as spam to protect the site owner , just like here in youtube.

I am also a site owner and I take the challenge to accept SideWiki!

  • Yes Turtle -- a lot of people feel the sidewiki is evil -- and overly intrusive + possible illegal (?) -- but thankfully people are coming up with ways to block or eliminate it from their site(s)! For example... /watch?v=OJcFYf0nmc4

  • Black hat/ Big Brother/Orwellian project at its best! The sad part is that if just one person puts something negative up there (and don't tell me that google is naieve enough to think it will only be positive comments) the webmaster will lose rank, money on bidding on adwords for products no one will buy thanks to negative comment, and they have no control over this! That's the whole reason people purchase their domain names for their own websites! Evil! Evil program!

  • Comment removed

  • LOL, you are far off my friend.

  • No, groznij, I don`t think I am far off. I`ve heard some modern day historians say that Jesus Christ`s influence on the world has no been equalled, except perhaps by the influence of things like the Industrial Revolution. No any other individual.

A few weeks ago Google commemorated Michael Jackson`s birthday for heavens` sake. No please. No one in their right mind would say that he has had as much an influence on the world as Christ.

  • why the hell does google have a freakin youtube channel?

  • hey i would i format in google docs in MLA format. I copy and paste from microsoft to google docs and google docs reformats it and it is very frustrating since it has to be in MLA format since my biology teacher requires it for all 100 pts of essays which we have about 10 a semester PLZ HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • intressant att den fungerar endast på IE och Firefox, de är ju i o f störst. bra idé som tål att testas :)

  • Democracy way of making world better.

  • Seems like a good idea, it's funny how they're using Firefox and not Google Chrome.

  • failll

  • You realize that 99% of the entries will be goatse and rickroll, right? (I feel it's different from Wikipedia in that it really poses potential for surprise factor, at least until most people have stopped using the service. You might add it to a recipe site and horrify old ladies.)

  • My guess as to why it isnt available for Chrome is that Google is focusing on the Chrome Frame plugin for IE and Firefox, as they havent met their success criteria for Chrome itself. I would like to see it for Chrome though. /shrug

  • Why isn't this available for Chrome?

  • It will... give the developers time. :)

  • Shouldn't they be using Google Chrome??? Which btw is far better than Firefox

  • Don't agree, and Agree. Should they all use their own browser? And we wouldn't have Chrome Frame if they ignored the 76% of the browser no Googler uses.

They're working to get it in Chrome, like Browser sync and some previously unavailable "regular" toolbar features, but they will probably finalize Extensions for Beta first. I'm using ver.4 on the dev branch, for which there's already FlashBlock and stuff available. Beta & Stable channel users will have to wait a little bit for extensions.

  • i find it funny that their using firefox

  • Lol yeh!

  • where is CHROME??? oh w8! there is no Google Toolbar for CROME!! wtf? google wake up!

  • wake up, there's no need for a Google Toolbar in CHROME!!! It's INTEGRATED in the OMNIBAR!!!! read up!

  • is not about the dumb side wiki. is about the toolbar itself!!! mail, bookmarks, custom search, etc.

  • custom search is in the omnibar, bookmars is already integrated. You can't use Google Chrome, don't use Google products!

  • lolz, I know... i know... sad isn't it?

  • No need for it, just search for whatever you want in the address bar...

  • is it coming to opera?

  • Probably not, google hasn't even built an extension for opera yet. I did see that some guy had sorta made a google toolbar, but it was so broken, didn't do anything.

  • home page of google rocks fuck nimemsn home page :)

  • I tried getting the W3C Annotea to work years ago. Failed. This looks like the same thing, only probably less open. Still, could be pretty awesome.

  • useless

  • This idea was done before,... even in the 90's by a few plug-ins and seperate apps, ... and they all failed because no one is really interested in what other visitors of a site have to say.

  • Again. Let me highlight "in the 90's".

The web is a million times more social these days. Just about everyone cares what others have to say about anything.

    Join the new era!

I think this will take off.... but not now. It has many issues it has to take care of to make it reliable and spam free

  • ahh, you poor thing. We all read what you wrote here, don't worry about it. lol

The wepcomments extension looked better IMHOHO.

  • Why do they not use CHROME?

  • To show that it works elsewhere?

  • They not greedy and expose other product besides their own.

  • I personally think this is crap.

  • What music track is this, anyone?

  • Comment removed

  • spam control implemented? If not I think there'd be more spam than information.....

  • 0:37

Information on the sites themselves isn't enough already XD

  • it needs to be opt in and moderated. Otherwise it will be spam city. Can you imagine all those trolls having their say on your website without a veto by you?

  • It is how it should be.

Foxnews, MSNBC, and various others restrict or do not allow comments on the articles they wrote.

This sidewiki allows people to post contradicting information without the censorship of people who disagree with your opinion.

Ignore the trolls, Don't censor, censorship gets out of hand. While I sometimes do not like everything google does, This is by far one of their Best Endeavours.

  • why google use mozzila firefox to make this vidéo ? it's sigle to see goole don't use chrome !! very funny and strange this vidéo

  • They would like to expose other programs they not greedy.

  • ok thank you

  • yeahh

  • There is enough spam already. Why invite more??? And give them a perfect tool/widget to do it?!

No thank you! This is not a tool I would ever consider using

  • What about on news articles that you disagree with or you believe are mis leading. OR the Scam websites where you can put RIGHT on their Website taht they are infact a Dam Spam website.

The Pro's far out weigh the cons. I'm right now going to comment on Cathys teeth. the scam website that I heard about that Doesn't like people canceling and charges your credit card over and over.

    I fucking love this tool

  • It seems to be interesting enough. However also Its background music is nice. What is it? Is there anybody able to give me an aid?

  • It's like a comments section for the internetz!

  • this is soo stupid google is making a a video about sidewiki and its using firefox ??? why not google chrome

  • Needs Opera support.

  • Spammers delight.. just look at the comments posted here.. the introduction of this new feature turned into a waste of time argument about to chrome or not to chrome. Does anyone think Ben Stein would make a good president?

  • I can't see any way this can be useful because in a matter of days every useful website will be covered in graffiti, spam, porn, etc... I bet they already are... anyone care to give a report that has tested it?

  • this means u probably can enable or disable contributions on the webpage via sidewiki?

if this is not optional by web admin, this means that a webpage is at the mercy of so-called reviewers.

  • I was thinking the same thing. A competitor could spam your website.

  • cool i wannna try this out

i wonder if it will work with mac

  • good stuff, i hope chrome will have it soon

  • Comment removed

  • google gets better and better

  • Gay because you need Google bar installed. No reason for that at all.

  • Yeah. I would use it without the need of the toolbar. Why do they even have that thing? I don't need it taking up all my space, and I think toolbars are ugly.

I have no problem using a companies products, but it gets old when they push too hard or overdue things.

I was looking for a place to comment on this very issue! I had Google Chrome installed, and I seen no options for this option.

If this gadget is used, it could really ad a new later to the internet.

  • Not supporting Chrome? Come on.

  • OMG make it for chrome, idiots

  • Chrome hardly has the market share of Firefox and FF is a better option than IE. They're more interested in getting SideWiki feature off the ground before packing it into their own young browser.

  • agree

  • amazing - amazing !

Collective intelligence for every Website, for every word, for every sentence ... i love this feature :-)

  • I know! I am excited about this new feature! I often want to leave comments on websites or post a quick comment about something, but ill have to full out some form, register or some other thing I just dont have the time for.

I would love for something to be quick and easy. However, something like this can, and will be abused, so we need to look how we can attack these problems now.

This would add a new layer to the internet.

  • lol, no chrome.

  • Chrome will have extensions in the next version.

  • i like how they dont use chrome

  • WHEN IS THIS COMING TO CHROME?!?!?!?

kinda ironic that's it is not on chrome yet isnt it?

  • Is out im using it.

  • This is by Google, but their very own browser Chrome is not supported? I pass.

  • y dnt they have this for google chrome but they do for firefox??

  • idk... cuz firefox is better? :)

  • Chrome #1!

    FireFox #2

    Opera #3

    Safari #4

    Every other Browser #5........

    Internet Explorer #100

  • All Chrome needs is the same amount of quality plugins as Firefox (esp. Firebug and the developer toolbar) and it will win my heart... I already love the raw SPEED and process-per-tab features of Chrome.

  • This is a reply to this comment and the one below it that you left. I agree with you that Chrome needs quality plug-ins like Firefox. If my chrome doesn't work for some reason I use FireFox. And for everyone out there INTERNET EXPLORER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yea... i like firefox better, but you're right about the explorer thing *thumbs upping comment*

  • Anyone that uses Firefox or Chrome are in the 21st century.

  • yup :)

  • Newsflash: Google invents 3rd voice !

  • Why were hey using fire fox and not that google thing?

  • Chrome basically sucks because there are no good addons and the design is sloppy, imo.

  • Way cool. I like the idea. I would hope that, for sites with application driven URLs, somehow this can remain helpful. Haven't read the docs on sidewiki yet, but I intend to use it fo' sho'. Thanks Google peoples.

  • super cool

  • Another way of flooding the web with ignorant opinions (if not regulated)...

It'll be comparable to youtube comments... with links!

  • like yours :D

  • My opinion could very well be ignorant, no question about that. But, it'll be nice if you could show me why it is :)

Everyone has opinions, some are just better than others.

  • It will need to be regulated somehow for sure.

  • Sure, Common Spam and Websites will be limited, But Ideas, thoughts, contradicting information should never be.

Regulation prevents flow of Ideas. I barely even trust the spam regulation for sure that is coming.

I Regulate what I read and don't read, Are you telling me you can't do the same dam thing, Spam is only effective if you BELIEVE in spam, which most people don't, So why bother, it is already regulated by public opinion.

  • 'Ideas, thoughts, contradicting information should never be regulated...'

Why not? Why allow the spread of contradicting information when facts can be established? I don't see any conflicting ideas about the shape of the earth, do u?

I strongly disagree with your opinion.

  • are you afraid of Freedom of speech? of freedom to express your opinion and to protest FACTS you don't agree with?

you regulate one, you end up regulating the other as a by-product

For example, it was considered a Fact back in the 1700's that blacks were Less human then whites.

Through the freedom to Oppose these so called Facts did you get the civil war and the eventual freedom of every black slave

Some facts are HARD to dispute, but you must Support the freedom to dispute them regardless

  • Good point. I was leaning more towards solid facts though, and I'm not afraid of freedom of speech, am an advocate.

But to be honest, some opinions are just sickening. Wikipedia is regulated, does that mean every article on it is censored to death?

  • Depends on the person.

For example, A person who advocates against Scientology might want more things about how Scientology takes criticism on the article and likely disagrees with the censorship of some of the things that are Banned from being put into the Scientology page.

While you may want to leave the censorship to the Solid facts, it is inevitable that someone will try to get their Views into that "Solid Fact" category to be protected. So good intention but can lead to a worse outcome.

  • And, I just found out, Google must be censoring some of the comments. I left a very Nice Side wiki on Scientology's page just mentioning that you can follow scientology and not pay money at the same time. That there were "Squirreled" Scientology sects that don't charge money to learn what scientology is about and that religion should be free.

But I went back to find out what other s-wiki's were left and Poof all s-wiki's were Deleted. So some censorship is occuring, how much is the question.

  • Because what some people think are "facts" are not always really, truly facts. Like some people think that the Big Bang is a "fact. But it's not. It's just an idea. There is absolutely no way to prove that the Big Bang happened. Same goes for the "fact" of 'global warming' (which most scientists disagree with, btw).

  • Sure, I regulate what I read. Technology has introduced so many new abilities that introduce new complexities. If you open up a child care facility, and your competitor maliciously sidewikis a false "review" about supposed borderline abuse/attitude towards the children... that will scare away new business, and you might be looking for new work.

  • Most people have the decency to say only truthful things. But bad reviews speak louder than good ones. It only takes one false bad review to loose much business. Having said that, I am all about free speech, but technology has provided a means for falsehood to go rampant without check. Word of mouth has become word of web which extends much farther than the distance a lone person can walk. We need a solution.

  • I agree with rcurry71.

Free-speech is a good thing, but bad information is extremely dangerous.

  • Pretty cool,

but if a page uses Ajax that could change all the contents of it, then the comments won't be the same ... and its still the same Page !

    is this supported ?

  • I believe that Google has a reason for that.

  • cool

  • Google Chrome DOES support extensions. I'm using several user-made ones right now(AdSweep and a couple others). Google even created the .crx format for Chrome extensions. So why didn't Google already make Sidewiki for Chrome? I'm very confused.
