This is not about who is smarter, the answer in simple: Chimps have better short memory term and this is because of their evolution and environment in which they have to possess a strong short memory in order to survive. IT does not mean they are more intelligent than us.
This is actually a trick question for humans. Humans already know how to count so the human brain deposits and deals with numerical information totally differently. Chimps don't spend years doing maths at pre school instead they know a jumble of symbols (to them) that represent an order. Their brains devote large amounts of real estate to the problem over a huge amount of time. Humans use integer symbols to DO problems. Chipms see the numbers AS the problem.
Humans are breed to over think things and make equations and solutions so that we can apply them to other things. I do believe this thinking skill is called application and it's the second highest thinking skill there is. IMO This is what I think.
Force me to sit in front of that screen for as long as they forced those primates to and ill do it probably just as fast as them cuz its fucking brainless to them, they dont know numbers like we do, they know 9 = before 8 or you dont get a treat.
This chimp doing the same things everyday. The only focus of he/her mind is this machine in order to get peanuts. Think of it, if you master the keyboard letters, numbers and symbols or whatever, you don't need to look at it, because you knew already where it is. The same at this chimp.
They can do it better because we have developed alternative means of problem solving and strayed away from solely visual operation. We see numbers flash up on the screen and we FOCUS on getting them in the correct order. We develop strategies to solve the problem, instead of just initially storing visual information to reference later (which naturally hasn't been as important as INTERPRETING visual information). A chimp sees and it does, we're incapable of that. We're bred to overthink.
The scientists are measuring two compleatly different animals. What next, are humans faster that a cheetahs. No this video just test for short term memory differences between humans and chimps. The human mind is more complex than a chimps allowing us to have complex forms of communications such as the ones we are using on youtube.
I assure you the test does not account for those meager differences.
most prolly chimps rely more on visual memories, while human beings have evolved to comprehend stuff in languages and logics, which made them performed poorly in this test.
Here's my thought: We see numbers. Chimps don't see numbers, they see patterns. Furthermore, we count the order, chimps don't. They see the patterns in the pattern - a sort of grammar. This symbol ranks above that, etc. Learning this way might be easier for a human. The real test is to introduce both human and chimp to novel symbols.
That's great...a monkey can remember numbers in the right order. But can a monkey perform something difficult like quantum physics or chemical engineering?
So we are actually a devolution of the monkey. Provably true. All that we have do more than a monkey is back from each other and poison this planet. The monkeys are provably more happy than us.

That primate had most likely been training with the same setup of numbers before. Perhaps there was maybe 100x different panels of numbers, and it would simply recognize the next generated one by it's geometry, and ofcourse it would have learnt each and every new panel of numbers correct order. Since counting seem to be something easy for apes these days.
It is highly doubtable that it has an instant photographic memory.

If you only knew how often it happens within the corrupted part of the science world. People just purposedly make the experiment `prove´ whatever they find interest in claiming to have been proven.
For example the first research team to have "successfully cloned stem cells". And countless medecines created in the past.
What's the advantage of lying though? Why would science lie about this? What would their motive be in spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in lab equipment, scientists time, and monkeys? Just to call you a stupid human and rub it in your face?
You do have a point that all science should be rigorously tested over and over again by different scientists with different motives (this is the basis of science)
I have seen other videos where chimps display very intelligent behavior.
thank you abc news for a clip devoid of any critical thinking. ironically, making it appropriate for a chimp. Not one bit of "so what, who cares" in this whole video. Make chimps write computer code, then I give a shit.
there minds work differently. I want to see a chimp to Algebra or play piano, but no! there minds work differently. My theory is that chimps have a better memory and thats probably it.
It was "young chimpanzees" vs adult humans. Those chimps were basically raised to do that one activity, and since they're young they'll learn much more readily. I'm sure they've sat there for hours, pressing the numbers and eating peanuts. To bring an adult human in to compete proves nothing. I'm sure a human child raised to press numbered boxes would be as good, or better. (And why didn't the human get peanuts? That's favouritism.)
Simcon the reason why they are saying that the Chimps are smarter is that they appear to have a much larger spacial cortex (they need very little time to see an image and store it in memory and then recall said image) which in most testing and results mean the potential to be exceptionally smart, Dolphins also test high in spacial cortex style test too.

These monkeys were trained over months, perhaps years for this task.
Give a human a day (and a reward of a dollar instead of a peanut) to train for this task and we'll see where humans stand.

This is a variation on an old study. Chimps out perform humans because they don't have cognitive interference.
In other words, humans know what the numbers MEAN. Chimps only see symbols and recognize a sequence.
Humans understand that the numbers are mathematical and relate to one another which interferes with the task. Humans essentially "know too much."
The same test was run on novel symbols and humans were fast than chimps. The "peanut reward" motivator has long been proven wrong.
quitifa 2 years ago 3
@quitifa The chimps also know what the numbers mean. They can link the numbers to real life objects, in other words, they can count :)
