I think the best thing for WV would be to get the federal government to offer up loans to folks to buy wind and solar power generating systems and then start making those systems in WV. The biggest hurdle to transferring from dirty to clean sources of power is the up front cost. But if the federal government would loan folks the money to buy green energy setups, then there would be a huge demand to buy those setups. It costs less to make a payments on those loans than we now pay the power co.
There is nothing wrong with coal mining as long as it is done responsibly but when they go and blow up the mountains that is not responsible at all. I understand people need jobs but why not just mine below the surface and leave the mountain tops alone?
for the people that dont like mining try to live with out coal and answer the people around here when they ask why dont more jobs come the eastern Kentucky also go in your house and look at all that is or has metals and then box them up turn off your main breaker and well guess ya might wont to stay in your yeard naked couse coal has to do with everything ya use see and need also tell the people that have to have machines that there not gona live much longer couse ya wont to save a tree
Showalter Micropower wants to use greenhouses to pump in c02 from natural gas generators to fast grow trees to be replanted on old mines. Trees are to be free of charge to companies that would replant them on mine sites. Trees are better then grass to control water run off and clean the air better then just grasses. Natural gas is one step down from coal but use of natural gas in WV is very low for power use. The same cost to make 10.2 megs of power for 5000 homes or heat only two from NG.
While it is possible to remove most of the sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate (PM) emissions from the coal-burning process, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and radionuclides will be more difficult to address. Technologies do exist to capture and store CO2, but they have not been made available on a large-scale commercial basis due to the high economic costs. For this reason renewable energy sources may be a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative.
