@carrotmuffin71 There is a double bass pattern in between each set of two hits. For e.g. Double snare, double kick, double toms double kick. And so forth :)
Great cover! Really like it! Just a little note, the amazing fill at 4:58 is actually played with a single pedal, not doubble pedal as you do. But it sounds quite the same.
@ReBeLhIpI if you look at the base drum pedal at the fill he does not. he uses doubble pedals. But as long as it sounds good, which is does it's an awsome cover.
Damn what a great project. Three of some of the most talented people in Rock & Roll!!! And Dave Grohl back on the drums makes it. He's the one who got John Paul Jones to play with them. Not to discredit Josh cause he's amazing in his own right. He's a guitar icon to me. I wish I could just get the same sound that he does. Josh if you see this I'd love a few tips on where your sound comes from. Don't give me that "my guitar" b.s. either.
@understated2010 thanks brah. it's a mapex black pather deep forest walnut 6.5x14", they don't make them anymore. And I recently fucked up the bearing edge....:( FML
@thegreenass182 thats correct. I play it like that all the way through, but I think on the second half he does 3/1 instead of 2/2, so snare-tom-tom-kick, snare-tom-tom-kick. But I just kept it snare-tom-kick-kick on that part. make sense?
@sandi739 lol ohhh i didn't know if that was some special technique i've never heard of lol. yeah I do use double kick at the end, and I know dave uses a single pedal. I just didn't think about it at the time
A bit of criticism, your snare work sounds awfully inconsistent in the songs that I have checked out with you playing on. It kinda looks like the snare is too high for you and is cramping your playing up a bit. Other than that you're pretty good. Your set sounds really nice.
@CCDaDon15 I know I'm late on this, but thanks for the advice! I've actually done some modifications lately to my setup that make my playing more relaxed and comfortable. Definitely very important!
@sdools95 I answered you first ? earlier. There's no EQ on the cymbals, they are coming through the drum mics, not using any overheads. They sound better in real life. :)
@VSDRUMS hah, my bad, bad internet. that's awesome, i just have zbt's now i want to get a custom, it's kinda hard to just skip up though. I't's a lot to just buy a pack but even more expensive to buy one at a time
@sdools95 I change up my cymbal setup a lot, but in this video it's a 20" A custom crash (right), and 18" A custom crash (left), and a 21" A Sweet ride
@VSDRUMS Thanks so much i was stuck on that for ages, got the rest of the song down, sorry to be annoying but this is my last question, for the final bit of the songs on the toms, Are they just triplets as in RLK or is it something else?
@CrucialConor well, it's 16th notes actually, 2 toms + 2 kicks per beat. But honestly, I think after listening to it more I think he switches to 3 toms + 1 kick half way through, but I just played 2 + 2 the whole way. It's def all 16th notes tho.
that 's a beautifull song to play on drums...sooooo fun..but still when i play it i kind of add some fills here and there to make it fun my way you know ^^ but aaaaaaaaaawesomme drum kit and playing !! likin' it!
were you able to somehow reduce the volume of Dave Grohl while you were playing? Or did you just literally put your audio on top of the song and match it up with your video?
I just listened to the song on my iphone (pretty much full blast), but when playing the drums, it drowns out daves playing enough to where it isn't distracting. Then, I export the drum audio (mixed), and then mix my drum track with the original TCV song (with daves drums). I use Final Cut Pro software to match the video and both audio tracks (TCV song and my mixed drum track). Make sense?
can we hear the original song's drum kit while we're listening to you play as well? I think at 1:46 I hear some stuff that you clearly didn't play. Nice work.
Yep. My drum track is on top of the entire original song, including the original drum track. So at 1:46, Dave plays a snare fill that I didn't play, so that's what you're hearing. hard to remember every little fill! haha
@VSDRUMS Hey man, I was just wondering, at the end of this song are you using a double bass or really well timed triplets? Since listening to it I always thought it was double? From here looks like flams and single kick?
Great work by the way you have a very similar play style to myself, especially in your band Gods, nice to see :)
Hey IRDANIMAL! I'm using double bass at the end, the pattern is 32nd notes, not trips.
