I have always thought that if you could sum up Nashville in 3 minutes and 17 seconds, this is the song. Arguably, maybe the best country song ever recorded. I know that is saying alot.

I have to agree with others here. I'd forgotten Lacy and how much I liked this song back in the day. Her voice is recognizable just as Shelly West, and Tanya Tucker. There are good new artists out there but there music, to me, lacks some of the soul I guess you would say. At least we have Youtube and some considerate folks to provide these gems for us! Great Music lives forever.
Great to see Lacy again and hear this song. Thank you for your great job of trying to keep the real country alive. It is such a shame that you can't hear this type of music without playing it in your car or such. If you can find it to buy) I can't help but think there are many young people who would appreciate some real music if they were just exposed to it. Too many "Taylors" operating under the name of country when they have nothing to do with it. Thanks again for your posts.
I also Thank You for taking a stand on your policy of no profanity etc! =)
Lacy J Dalton had a song where she sang about "Two Dogs wiped his broken head, blur bandana drippin' red, and wondered for the [hundredth?] time how hard it was to die..[adios amigos?] father's favorite sons, colder than the cold blue steel it took to make their guns..." - Do you know what song that is? I had the album years and years ago and cannot recall the name of that song to search it. If you can tell me - thanks!
This is the one of a kind nowhere else to be heard version. I have to say however, that Sunny Sweeny did a credible job. these twenty or so years later...
She has a distinctive voice, like Sugarland and Reba and you know it as soon as you hear it. She may not have wrote this one, but she sure made it her own.
have known her maybe 30 years since she was living in the Santa Cruz mnts. her bands a bunch of great guys to ...I dont know if shes still performing or not kinda lost touch guess am going to have to drop in and say hello.
What a story these lyrics tell about the music industry and can tell just about life in general. Not to take away from their original intent but these lyrics can refer to almost anyone who has walked away from everything “just to see a dream come true”. I have dialed the phone collect to home and I bet many of you have as well. This is truly country music at its best, well next to Roy Acuff but let us not get into a debate. Keep up the great work and thanks very much for posting this song.
The first time i heard this tune i fell in love with Lacys voice and many years later when i had a daughter i named her after this one of a kind voice .
Could you PLEASE upload one of my favorite songs by Lacy J ?? It is on the album Sixteenth Avenue and it titled I am one of the Unsatisfied . It is hard for me to believe that NO ONE has EVER uploaded that song, BUTTT NOBODY HAS
I ABSOLUTELY JUST LOVE THAT SONG. I used to play it on my cassette player all the time, but my home burned it and everything else ALL UP. I would so much like to hear it again, PLEASE.
This song is country music. Lacy nailed this one. If you like her I invite you to check out her 1989 Highway Diner album. Some of you might know of it, but if you don't, it is one of the most amazing buried treasures in the history of country music. On this album (i'm still thinking in the terms of vinyl) you will find the number "Hard Luck Ace." It is a tribute to Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Hank Jr. The heart and soul Lacy puts into this song is like no other preformance ever. She's real
I love Lacey J. especially this song. Thank you for your zero tolorance on comments.I beleive that if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything.
I know what it feels like to be be turned down in the "Country Music Buisness" If you haven't got several thousand bucks to "Grease a palm" Just forget it and go back home...
In 1989, I got to Nashville in a $100 pick up truck I bought from my brother-in-law ('68 ford) I had about $24.oo left after I arrived. I had an old guitar that played great, but had a big hole in the side. And I went to work for a 'day labor' place called "PDQ" (and really did swing a nine pound hammer) as I worked at a place called "Crown Tent" putting up big top tents for special events. "I literally lived this song" up the point where "No Curtains Ever Hung" my dream never came true! Sad....
Love this grand lady's voice. Sure wish she was more main stream today. She has a wonderful unforgettable voice. We want more of you, Lacy! Too Tall Tom in Florida.

I remember back in the 1970's I was a big fan of the Rock band Queen. Guitar Player Brian May had a Tone like no other. Nobody could mimic it. Lacy's voice reminds me of Mr. May in that she sounds like nobody else! Like his Guitar, her voice is instantly recognizable-and, in addition, nobody can mimic it! We love you Lacy!
I love all of her music but like george jones she does not get radio play time it is a damn shame too. She is an amazing woman with an fantastic voice
"But then one night in some empty room...like a miracle some golden words rolls off someone's tongue..." This describes perfectly the moment of inspiration and creation.
Hey... nice channel, I really like what you're doing! I'm a singer / songwriter in Kentucky and recently created an original music channel. I'd love if you'd stop by, have a listen, and give me your feedback! I just subbed and friended you, it be great if you'd return the favor. Keep on Keep'n On! Thanks - Dave May
Come back Lacy. We need your great talent and unique voice more then ever. You've made country music the standard by which the current singers should hope to become. Please let me get the chance to see you on tour. I'll be in the front row...
This song and "Something In Red" are two of the most nearly perfect songs ever written. Misses Dalton and Lorrie Morgan, respectively, sing them flawlessly.
Wow...I love Lacy J Dalton and this song brings back many great and fond memories for me. Takes me back to my teenage years in the 80s growing up in Southern California when listening to country was not so cool back then but I sure did love the music and I love her voice. So sad that those great country radio stations in Los Angeles are all gone now. Those were some great country songs in the 80s.
An absolute masterpiece; for those of us who grew up listening to true country music, this immortal classic can best be described as 'as good as it gets'.
Hey Dog Buddy, Welcome to Country That Sounds Like Country, Yes Lacy J. Has Some Clean Sweet Sounding Pipes, And Hell Yes Tom Schuyler(That's Dutch for Scholar By The Way) wrote a classic for the boys who make the noise on 16th Avenue! This Is Top Ten All Time Country Material! Thanks to: flashbell and You Tube, one for the upload and the other for the power and the space!
I had forgotten about her...don't know how I did that! I've been listening to a classic country station....and enjoying every minute of it....though haven't heard her yet on it...but anywho, she's gr8!
I have loved Lacys voice and this song from the first day I heard it and I agree with so many of the other posts on the subject as too what has happened too country music. Songs with beautiful lyrics and rhytm you can feel .That paint a mental picture are not performed much anymore.
Artists need too get the song writers too move back too their country roots.
Shame that Nashville's devoid of 'true' country these days.
Everything relates back to pop music, and it's just hard to tell genres apart any more. Newer country can have its charms, too, but we need to keep the older stuff alive, and I'm not seeing that on places like CMT et al.
There is no more story songs on country radio anymore; I believe if they have a catchy hook in the chorus they think they have it made- but true country fans like me will still keep hunting these songs down- and THANK YOU!
I know you said no artist slandering here, but I'm sure all of you would agree that today's country could NEVER measure up to this. It is truly upsetting to hear this song then a modern country song.
Channel Policy: We have a Zero tolerance for comments that include profanity, derogatory remarks made toward another viewer, an artist, any song or video. We have a channel hound trained to sniff out offensive language including profanity, racial slurs and other comments deemed offensive in nature. Anyone who chooses to ignore our channel policy will be nuked (blocked) from our channel. Just don’t do it!
@flashbell Thats nice that you have a zero tolerance for profanity and foul language. I get tired of seeing nothing but offensive language in most of the comments on youtube. Its nice to now that there is someone out there that dont have to use foul language to make a point. Keep up the good work and more Lacy J Dalton songs please! The old time music sure beats the junk that they call music today. Please comment as i know you wont call me any four letter words. Thanks!
@flashbell Thanks for the comment. You deserve all the support in the world and the ones that criticized you they just dont know how life shoud be. Im only 21 and i get criticized all the time for upholding the old way of life. I feel that just because most people have chosen to live a life of profanity and hate, that don't mean i have to. Thanks for the comment and keep up the good work!
@flashbell I believe more channels should follow your example! I know that I get tired of reading the fowl talk. not to mention sometimes the comments have nothing to do with the song. Keep up the good work! Thank you
@flashbell If you hear anything like that just simply report them. Especially if it's a troll (cyber-bully). I take a stand against people who post offensive comments about others.
Wow - first time I've heard this, but I definitely dig this song! It's no wonder other writers draw inspiration from it, anyone who's ever had to busk for a living especially would relate.
We might not know who truly wrote this.....But i think we can all agree it's one heck of a song.......Heard a lot of stars in Nashville say this tune was an influence on their careers.....
@bobbyozb I was so in love with this song in high school. This was my coming of age song. Like a miracle some golden words roll off of someone's tongue... just blows me away from everything! I like like like it. : )
"It was sometime later before I had the chance to meet Thom Schuyler, who wrote it, and he’s just as fantastic a person as this song is. He’s a very inspiring human being. In fact, I did another one of his songs on my Dream Baby album called “Old Yellow Car.”
But the Reason I like “16th Avenue” is because it’s a story about our lives."
@michthom110406 Thanks for the info friend.....This is the song that really got me hooked on country music......It is everything a country song should be.......Ah but then one night in some empty room where no curtains ever hung, like a miracle some golden words rolled off of someone's tongue. After being years of nothing their all lookin' right at you. And then for a while they we go in style on 16th avenue.......Incredible lyrics !!
Thank you all for turning a family story, which anyone would admit (and i often did) might have been false, into something ugly and petty. Listen to the song. Experience the characters relying on HOPE, a hope that is quite possibly FALSE and based on stories that couldn't be verified (cause one time someone told em about a friend of a friend they knew). Obviously, great music doesn't mean the same thing to many of you as it does to me. Obviously, for some of you it's just another pissing match.
This ranks right up there with "He stopped loving her today " by G Jones.....This song totally personifies country music....Today's Nashville sound will never match this.....Nashville's signature song !!!!!
i see people have a promblem with who wrote this song. i can tell you how nashville is iam a songwriter. i tried to get my songs on the charts. they will not use them. they want me to sell them. if you are smart do not sell your songs. worley01@comcast.net
@corey1075 Okay, Corey. Let's settle this once and for all. Try checking the official Lacy J. Dalton web page containing the lyrics for the song. If you note the upper right hand corner SHE credits Thom Schuyler as well. So much for your knowledge of the topic.
@zeekwolfe: I remember that song: about the man on page 602...My family owned a restaurant, and that song was on the jukebox....I wanted to break that record! My kids had to be shown 45's, as my mom has all of them from the Julebox still!
....one other thing (taken of the other youtube link to Thom Schuyler's original), I believe he uses the word "turnaround" to signal an instrumental turnaround to those playing with him.
Here is the YouTube link to Thom Schuyler's recording of this song he wrote:
youtube.com/watch?v=xy_p5iAQ17Y
This appears to be an original "scratch" copy of the original recording which he laid down. Listen to it and compare to Lazy Dalton's version. I love this song and its history.
When we were a boy, we adored hill billy music like this song. We also liked "Satin Sheets" by Jeannie C. Riley and "Watermelon Wine" by Tom T. Hall. Tammy Wynette could do no wrong and Johnny Cash wrote music for the gods. Charlie Pride, Waylon Jennings and even "Zoot Fenster." Zoot Fenster??? Yep! He wrote a hill billy song about the underwear model in the Sears Catalog. You recall...this man let it all hang out in the Fall/Winter edition somewhere back in the 70s.
I am in email communication with Thom Schuyler to confirm he wrote it. Meanwhile, I took this from his site.
BMI AWARD-WINNING COMPOSITIONS 16th Avenue - 1983 A Love Like That (Ian) - 1988 My Old Yellow Car - 1986 Nothing Like Falling in Love (Schnaars) - 1984 Years After You - 1985 You Can't Stop Love (Overstreet) - 1987
@flashbell , since discovering the other post of Thom Schuyler's own recording (presumably before???) he sold it to L Dalton, I found his version of the lyrics intriguing. I assume Lacy had them changed to fit style and recording time for most songs back then. Have you listened to that one. It provides a neat history. I'd like to know more about the changes, who made them (Lacy or Thom), etc. Thanks for any info.
I don't know who wrote it. I don't know who was the first artist to perform it. I also don't know or care who made the most money from it. What I do know, is that it a wonderful and touching song and I can't think of any one who could give it a nicer airing or rendition than Lacy Dalton. I really do love the song and the artist. Who ever might have written it, I love and respect them too.
I don't think anyone could have ever sung this better than Lacy J......her voice is perfect for this tune.....i really believe this is one of the all time best country songs ever....some golden words rolled off someones tongue.....great line...
WOW!!! It's been a really long time since I've heard Lacy j Dalton. My dad loved Lacy J. Dalton. Now this is real country music. The crap they play on "country" radio today is not real country music.
anyone with the talent to write this song could have written several other hits...Thom Schuyler has written several other hits, and his style of writing is all over this one....period.
Sometimes we drive the 50 miles or so from rural Tennessee to "The Big City" and usually head down to Lower broadway. This song captures entirely the mystique of Nashville. It isn't easy but every year the pickers and the singers come from all over to try. Bless 'em Lord! Lacy Dalton has that special something in her voice as she sings for all of those who try. Miraculous.
wow this takes me back!!~Loved this song n Lacy J!~Awesome haunting, longing rebel voice, her music most certainly is as timeles as she is!~Thank you so very much for posting this song I had a blast listening to it and reminiscing down memory lane! 5Star Rating...of course!!

I have loved Lacys voice and this song from the first day I heard it and I agree with so many of the other posts on the subject as too what has happened too country music. Songs with beautiful lyrics and rhytm you can feel .That paint a mental picture are not performed much anymore.
Artists need too get the song writers too move back too their country roots.
montezumameddie 1 year ago
Pretty song, always liked it.

Thanks!

@valley10100 , We decided on our policy from the outset. We have received lots of support and some who have criticized us.

@bobbyozb I was so in love with this song in high school. This was my coming of age song. Like a miracle some golden words roll off of someone's tongue... just blows me away from everything! I like like like it. : )

@bobbyozb
Thom Schuyler was the writer of "16th Avenue" and included it on his 1983 Capitol album "Brave Heart." It was not released as a single.
larryscountry 9 months ago
@bobbyozb This is directly from her website:
"It was sometime later before I had the chance to meet Thom Schuyler, who wrote it, and he’s just as fantastic a person as this song is. He’s a very inspiring human being. In fact, I did another one of his songs on my Dream Baby album called “Old Yellow Car.”
But the Reason I like “16th Avenue” is because it’s a story about our lives."
michthom110406 7 months ago

You recall...this man let it all hang out in the Fall/Winter edition somewhere back in the 70s.
zeekwolfe 1 year ago

Thanks for any info.
ruralvoice 1 year ago
I don't know who wrote it. I don't know who was the first artist to perform it. I also don't know or care who made the most money from it. What I do know, is that it a wonderful and touching song and I can't think of any one who could give it a nicer airing or rendition than Lacy Dalton. I really do love the song and the artist. Who ever might have written it, I love and respect them too.

Miraculous.
