  • I like her version of the song. As for the EMO comments. EMO is not Emotional Punk. EMO is what you get when you water down any music style to formula pop. EMO is what you would get if BACK STREET BOYS covered NIRVANA but used their own song lyrics. It's SHYTE!

No artist should try to fake an emotion they don't have. That BS only works on N'SINC fans.

  • good night all guys !!! :) hahah

  • listen guys: i love this song, each and every cover, But billy's version has this little verse "dreaming, i was only dreaming, i wake and i find that you sleep in the deep of my heart" probably this singer hasnt had much exiting lovelife after the hypothetical death, i wish she had, but life goes on and now she s a bitch on you :)

this is the Most Beautifull Version of this song i ve heard following gitane demone and billy....

  • March 1940: The great Artie Shaw on clarinet with Pauline Byrne on the vocals.

  • right

  • ...I found this song so depressing...I don't really like it..except the sound of the clarinet of Mr. Artie! :)

  • whats up with her trying to get this song over with.. she sings it without depression.. which weirdly I which she could. lol.. this song seems so different among the multiple versions

  • wow, the clarinetist is amazing. It actually makes me like the instrument lol.

  • this song made me sleepy...

  • Yeah- who is the artist? My guess is Benny Goodman, but I'm justgoing on the voice of the singer. Peggy Lee?

  • This is without any doubt Artie Shaw on clarinet.

  • Ya this is Artie Shaw

  • I like all the different version of this song. Who is singing this one. I can see her singing this in a smoky club in the late 40's. I really like the end, almost a strip tease sound.

  • Idę się zabić!!!

  • nice music but Vokal doens't make any sence...that some one wants to commit suicide, not enough vives..

  • are you serious?

  • I absolutely love this song.

  • creepy

  • this version is beautiful. I love the music most of all

  • I think it's funny about everyone bitching about this interpretation of the piece is some whiny emo teenager, going off about how "they didn't sing it sad enough!"

C'mon. Really? It's a jazz version. It swings. No American versions are going to carry the devastaion of the original Hungarian lyrics so they shouldn't try. Forcing it to sound "sad" just sounds like emotional masturbation, like Sarah Mclachlan's lame guitar/wispy soprano version (though I like her as a singer).

  • The lyrics in this version are down hearted enough that they can be delivered straight, and still be effective. It's called underplaying. And subtlety.

Learn to develop your musical ear, or go cry to your emo bands.

(oh, and 'scuz the typos plz.... it's been a gloomy sunday.)

  • That's not the least bit accurate. Many are just musical purists who believe that the original is always the best.

  • I too find a rather dissapointing tendancy to be joly in american culture. Bring on the black and bleak, lets have raw base human emotion.

Having said that the wonderful american blues singer Billie Holiday has a fantasic haunting lyric on her version just a shame about the way the track ends.

  • Do you mean Sarah Brightman? Because her version made me want to weep for the future of music.

On another note, I find Diamanda Galas' version to be the most powerful (though not pretty) of all.

  • Sarah brightman made me want to rip my ears off. I once heard a version on the accordian and it was amazing.

  • one of the better versions

  • This particular Artie Shaw version of "Gloomy Sunday" was arranged by the famous Black composer/arranger William Grant Still. Information about him can be found at Wikipedia.

  • This song makes slashing wrists fashionable.

Gitane Demone (ex-Christian Death) did an awsome job of a cover of this song, but the jazzy 'New Orleans' version is awsome.

  • so scaryT__T

  • Can you tell me where I can find a cd with Szomoru Vasarnap on it? I really like the original version, But I can't find it anywhere (and shipping from Europe is a brat)

  • its happy b/c Billie Holidays songs are happy / she cant be sad + its the first record of the song and they made the singer to change the end into a happy one .....

Sarah Mclachlan and Diamanda Galas sond best - serch the covers

  • Billie Holiday managed to over-happy "Strange Fruit", too XD

  • this song was originally written to be a dark and depressing song.

why do people make it sound fucking happy?

They robbed the true emotion of Rezso Seress.

  • Agreed :/ Try the versions by Sarah Brightman, Sarah McLachlan and Diamanda Galas. Those are suitably gloomy.

  • those are not gloomy.

i really think its gay that they changed the lyrics at the end with the "dreaming, i was only dreaming" part.

    its fucking gay.

funny how people have to incorporate a happy ending all the time. ill let you know when i release my version of it, its pretty gloomy.

  • They're gloomier than Rezso Seress's version, anyway.

And I agree that the last part of the song is bad (reminds me of how the Christians added the renewal after Ragnarok), but please don't use my sexuality as a simile for an undesirable state.

  • have you heard the original?

its in hungarian, and it has the strongest feeling of emotion than all other versions.

these arent even the real lyrics to this song.

  • By "real" I assume you mean "original" >__> Yeah, I know. And yes, I have heard the original, Szomoru Vasarnap. I liked it, I just also like these versions.

  • yes lol, i meant original.

    thats cool man,

    these versions are sure interesting.

  • Diamanda didn't put the gay part on her version, actually she says that when it happenned, "then was when appeared the first pop song"...well somehow lke that.bUT Rezso is the one that puts all his soul on it,and I will be waiting for ur version.

  • sweet man.

i agree, Rezso was a passionate dude.

    fucking amazing musician and lyricist.

  • Yes.But I am not sure if he was recognized like that when alive...Sometimes geniuses and outstanding people need to die to get noticed.I am glad that theres people like you who can recognize a song who's truly got spirit. Oh,and Gloomy New Year!

  • damn rights man, people noticed it when he was dead.

    how sad really.

have a good new years man.

  • I really dson't mind this version.

I it's the style of that age. Listen to St James Infirmary, or even Rhapsody in Blue.

Even the Billie Holliday version is a similar arrangement, just done slower.

It only sounds "goofy" to us because of all the cliches that have sprung up around this style of music.

I actually think this is a fairly clear interpretation of it.

Better than the hatchet job Sarah McGlaughlin did to it.

  • perandor1 , jim30bell , Thank you very much for precious informations. People are great in Youtube.

  • the beat is really.. well.. upbeat. like she's happy her lover is gone. x_X

  • Yeah I agree O_o She sounds kind of insane..creepy.

  • It's Blues, dude... it's how alot of Blues sounds.

  • Billie Holiday is not blues dude.

  • Yes, she is. What else would she be??

  • she is more jazz then blues man.

listen to old blues, its not like this at all.

  • Here, some examples: Billie's Blues [Simply the Best] (Simply The 2001); Lady Sings the Blues: The Billie Holiday... (Verve 1995); Billie Sings the Blues (Sandy Hook 1995). Yes, she's done jazz, but she's best known for her blues like covering Gloomy Sunday and the song 'Strange Fruit' - now that was true blues.

  • Who is the player of the clarinet? and the singer?I love this version.

  • The clarinet is played by Artie Shaw and the singer is Helen Forrest.

I am very lucky to have the record.

    Alex

  • Run a "google" search for "Artie and the Singers". You can download this song sung by Paula Byrne..not Helen Forrest.

  • Correction: I mean PAULINE Byrne. Sorry.

  • nice song ;]

  • they totaly butchered the integrity of this song!!!

  • this version is a light one... try the original hungarian version, it's far more sad and tragic...urgh...

  • Can you tell me where I can find the original Hungarian version if you've managed to find it?

  • look up Hungarian Idol. there's a chick who sings a beautiful version of it

  • Does anyone know where i can find the mp3 of the original version? the hungarian one? I can't find it anywhere!!!

  • let me know when you find out

  • The Diamanda Galas version is awesome!

  • The song originally was really depressing and sad, very sad... ends with the dead of the subject... when billie holiday was about to sing it the producers made her change it to a happier mood.

This is the original version recorded by Billie Holliday, changed to fit the public.

  • Good Lord have mercy, this version is AWFUL!! Does not capture the sadness, or beauty of the lyrics at all.

  • which is the REAL version?? could someone tell me, please!!! i wanna listen it

  • FinnVintersorq is correct...this recording has Artie Shaw on clarinet with a vocal by Pauline Byrne.

  • I much much agree, that they have fucked the real version up real bad. They dont really capture the truth and the live and death of the song.

  • At least this doesn't have the "dreaming, I'm only dreaming" cop out verse at the end.

  • yeah i agree, lol

  • how is this sad lol

shavadavadava youre wrong this version sucks. omfg etc.

  • This is by far the most depressing version of this song iv'e heard and i have heard so many. It's depressing because it is such an abomination of those versions true to the mood of the song.

  • The Hungaryan...is the best...this is not so god...tjis is not so lonely

  • i hate this song

  • i totally agree with you, this is horrible!

  • this is much more cheerful than the original listening to this song still chills me to the bone about the whole legend behind it kinda scary

  • im trying to find the original. any ideas where i can find it??

  • There is none on youtube... They banned it.

  • Man, this version is so fast and upbeat I could almost get up and dance to it. Which is not something you should do with any version of Gloomy Sunday.

"Would they be angry if I thought of joining you?" NO, bitch, they'd be angry for you ruining a classic, heartbreaking song! Rrrgh.

  • 'Get up and dance to it'..... funny you should say that. This is a wonderful version for dancing blues to. Personally, I love it.

  • daww this ruins the magic of the original version.

  • this version is absolutely not heart breaking, like the original

  • Do you know where I could find the original?

  • cool version

  • she has a nice voice xD

  • oh, im dead..

    >hehe, just fooling around<

    peace and be blessed!

    >wuhey! why not try searching the lyrics for 'bloody sunday' its far more cool.<

  • Talk about butcher a song, they've turned it into some sort of jolly joke. I even bet the singer is wearing a big red clown's nose which goes 'honk' when you squeeze it.

  • this english version actualy isn't so sad as the original hungarian version...

  • it makes me feel glad to be alive. And relize the beauty in everything. Quite the contray to what some people may feel. I love it!!

  • it is not scary, its actually sad.

  • it is a legend.many people committed suicide because of it in the 30´

  • actually its not by billie holiday its by Rezső Seress from Hungary...

  • it not scary like they's say..i enjoy to hear it!!!

  • Actually this is the remake by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra and Pauline Byrne.

  • eliaspapo this is known is the hungrain sucide song because the after hearing the song some people killed them selfes and the song is by billie holiday

  • nice jazzy song~i dunno wat's really wrong with it?

  • good song

  • Who sings this? Lovely haunting melody, however creepy it may be.

  • ich mag die version, das lied wenn man die geschichte kennt mit dme ganzen selbstmord und tod.. naja

  • Alot of you say this isn't a scary song but if you listened to it playing violin you'd think other wise...

  • this is a wonderful song! my friends are scared of it though they are scared of it's legend

  • love-suicides and stuff. Interesting context. Unremarkable song.

  • This shit is weak.

  • well the thing about this song is that the wife of the author commited suicide leaving a note saying "gloomy sunday" that was after he composed the song

  • soi whats the wierd thing about this? nothing scary, even though the song is good

  • this is really creepy..

  • Billie Holiday sings on this version.

  • who singin it this time?

  • Who sings this one?

  • has nobody noticed that this is the tune at the start of Schindler's List. When he enters the cafe at the very beginning of the film, the band are playing it, and carry on for quite a while. I happen to think its quite upbeat and happy. I've always loved it, from the first time I saw the film! is that wierd?

  • Thats creepy! I just started seeing the movie, and i looked the song up because i thought so too :)

Its a great song though ;)

  • no, bands like AFI have made some upbeat yet very cathartic songs. Some people have different expressions of greif or sadness.

  • Great piece of the Artie Shaw orchestra. I also have on record the famous afro-american singer Paul Robeson singing this superb song.

A big hello from Friedrich (Holland)

  • i just like it!!!!

(i'm sorry to say) i think this song is crazy funny.

  • Billie Holiday did a version of this around the late 30s

  • ... ooh i didn't know that... tempted to have another go at making a music video to it again now.

  • Daryiel - Its an original Hungarian song created buy Seress Rezső, and the title is Szomorú Vasárnap (Gloomy Sunday), marked as the hymn of the suiciders in the 1940's, it was banned for decades, and started to be played in the early 90's again.

  • great version other versions i have heard have that terrible verse at the end were the singer tell us all the song was a dream

  • I want to hear the origional song! I've been looking for it everywhere to no avail...T_T

  • I didn't think I'd get any hits for this song. O_o So nice to see someone else found this song worth sharing.
