We never called ourselves arberesh and this is a new term that was just made up in the 19th century. I have spoken to linguists who have studied the language and they have said there is a strong greek influence and a lesser influence of turkish on the language spoken in Greci. . They are descended of mercenaries that went to italy in 1462 with Iskander Bey. Their origins were in Northern Greece and Western Turkey Just as Skenderbeg was Serbian and Greek as he states in his letters
my ancestors came from this village and we're not arberesh. i never heard the term until i got on the internet. i heard them call themselves gegers and they always said they were Italians; when speaking of the language they spoke it was called guh jone "our language" never albanian or arbersh the dialect is related to tosk with alot of words adopted from greek and italian and some turkish.
:) I'm from Greci, and I know we are arbereshe, because I speak arbereshe...it's not easy to explain this to people who don't have a good knowledge of this things. That's why we dind't use the term Arbereshe. I'm curius to see your documentaries..(sorry for my english)
It is not that difficult to mention that all people that came from Balkans were called Greci,( and don't make fun of people that don't spell that well English because they may know your history better than you ). By way when you say "things"is plural and therefore you need " these" instead of "this". Avete capito signore Katundigreci?
Thanks for taking the time to post this video. I will be in Italy this August (2009) and will be visiting Greci. This is a very nice introduction to the town.
