How Could you say that this is the weakest and most least known film? Come on. 72 people know what this is and probably love this movie and enjoy seeing this featurette.
@jensenismyhottie For the thousands who like this movie and the featurette, that's fine. It's not a bad film by any means, but I consider it one of his worse films (though my opinions have changed slightly since then; Troll is possibly his worst, so bad that even Bluth hates it!).
i grew up with Don Bluths cartoons, more so than Disney. I'm a little sad that they recieved such poor reception. I thought they were one of the greats. Give it to a child to think that of EVERY cartoon they watch. (except Snow White. never thought that of Snow White ಠ_ಠ scared the crap outta me.)
@FilmFTW1: There is definitely another version of this featurette with a narrator, claiming that this film is his most ambitious to date...but only from what I heard; I haven't seen it, nor do I own a copy of it.
@PolyBrow I saw it on a local tv show here in Adelaide South Australia, called Movie Scene. It was broadcast
at 5:30 - 6:00 pm on sundays in the early to late nineties. They only screened about 8 minutes of the featurette back in January 1992.(it was released in Australia in December 1991)
@ReallyGoodJoe: This is from my UK DVD copy of the film, the Optimum Releasing version to be exact. I believe there's an alternate version on the earlier Anchor Bay release (again, UK only) with narration.
@PolyBrow It seems odd that no US release would have it. Not that I really care all that much, haven't seen "Rock-A-Doodle", and don't plan on it. I'm just interested in finding as many interviews and promotion materials to Bluth's post-"All Dogs" pre-"Anastasia" films as possible, 'cause there is little documentation on the making of those films, and their stories (what little I can gather) fascinate me.
@ReallyGoodJoe: I think the US wouldn't have that material largely because the movies themselves aren't exactly in demand, plus there's the Animation Age Ghetto, which I think is more prominent in the US than in other countries. The stories surrounding these films is indeed fascinating and shrouded in mystery, particularly in the case of "The Pebble and the Penguin", where executive meddling drove that film to the ground. Gary Goldman wanted one of its songs cut, but that's all I know of.
@PolyBrow The only comments on the films from the Media Assets era from Bluth I could find were in Jerry Beck's animation guide, and those, in turn, came from either newspaper interviews from around the release of the films or from Bluth's magazine from the early '00s, which are very difficult to find. I found some interviews from the time "Thumbelina" came out, but none of the comments from his magazine.
5:44 I see a character sheet for the owls in the back ground. Does anyone know if that picture of the owls is on the internet somewhere? I want to take a closer look at it.

@sokkafan10 Thank u it doesn't have to do well in the box office as long as it brings enjoyment to it watchers..( plz don't say anything about the spelling I know I'm bad at it)
@RapierMedia Me too! He also holds the world record for most prolific animator. Skousen Book of Mormon World Records. Though I never knew that before I found that book. I didn't even know he was LDS. But I had a feeling from watching his films, that something was different.
@NotOrdinaryInGames What are you talking about?! Now I love the Nostalgia Critic but you don't have to agree with everything he says! And his review on Rock-A-Doodle still remains as my strongest disagreement with him. This is actually a good movie, not a masterpiece but its quite a fun movie. The kind of movies Don Bluth makes are hard to understand at first but actually make more sense if you put your mind to it. They're kinda like kids' movies at an advanced level.
@PolyBrow Actually, you're both right. The original live-action director left because he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He passed away the year the film started production.
All dogs go to heaven was a flop? But was'nt it a sucess and that it grossed over it's budget but not as big as don's 2 films land before time and american tale?
Sadly it did because of the overwheming success of Disney's "The Little Mermaid", which, to coin a phrase, blew it out of the water. "Mermaid" garnered a total of over $74 million while "Dogs" only totaled at $29 million. Fortunately, strong home video sales were enough to save the film from being totally forgotten.
I've read that Don Bluth made this film after "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was a hit. This explains the live action/ animation idea. On another footnote, Jason Marin who was did the voice of Flounder in "The Little Mermaid", plays Edmond's brother Mark in this film.
omg Edmond is so cute XD and what's Glen and the director (if that is the director) doing? i know they're recording but that's not in the movie..was it for something else?
That scene they're recording was an alternate, more downbeat version of the finale. The only way you can tell is when he says "That was real brave, standin' up against the Duke, I really appreciate it." The guy who's with him isn't the main director (that would be Don Bluth) but rather T.J. Kuenster, who composed the songs and served as arranger and song producer.
How Could you say that this is the weakest and most least known film? Come on. 72 people know what this is and probably love this movie and enjoy seeing this featurette.

"This is a mess." Yes...Bluth actually had to step in at the last minute to direct the live stuff when the original director died.

The live-action director didn't die...he simply left the project halfway through filming.
