Thanks for this video. It was very helpful when I was doing the brakes on our SL1. Of course no work happens on a vehicle without finding other things. I discovered the boot on the drivers side tie-rod got damaged somewhere along the line. So I will have more work to do in the future. Not to mention now that the brakes are not grinding, I hear other things I couldn't before.
Would those anti rattle clips cause the brakes to squeal or grind when coming to a stop? I just installed new pads and rotors on my 97 Saturn and the brakes squeal pretty bad when stopping.
@larryt7001 Yes, you grease where ever the rear of the pad makes contact with metal to prevent squealing. Greasing the front of the pads is dangerous and useless.
@richpin06a to cure the reverse slam from one of the forums i read i did this trikk called the wolfmans reverse cure, by lettin the car idle in (R) with the E brake up for 20-30 mins, but now by doin that it seems i leaking coolant 0_o? Any ideas of what might have happened?

Richpin, im trying to go and replace my front brakes on my 03 Vue. I cannot for the life of me find where I should use the jackstands on it. Any tips would be most helpful. Thanks.
@nullx86 I have not worked on a vue to give you a definitive answer but i have worked on some vehicles that i could not find a normal place for the stands so i used the pinch rails. If they are rusted you do not want to put a stand in that location though.
@richpin06a pinch rails are the two pieces of metal that are "pinched" for lack of better term, right next to the doors? Soory, noob to car terminology. Any other safe spots to do this?
@nullx86 The pinch rails are at the bottom of the rocker panels which go from the front wheel opening to the rear wheel opening. The pinch rails are were most cars are jacked from with the stock jack.

@richpin06a they looked normal to me. i didnt see any cracked or wear in it. and seriously i think im the first to swap the pads besides the dealer lol. im thinking rotors because they look like brown though i sprayed it with brake cleaner lol.
@richpin06a i did the brake job but it still sqeaks after i put the lub on the back of the pads. i mean after i do the job it will be fine/smooth for like 2days then after tht it will start again. MAB ITS THE ROTORS THATS BAD? or the lub tht i have sux ballz lol?
Great video! A couple of questions... I have a 1993 SW2, which has rear disk brakes. Is the replacement procedure essentially the same for early S-series cars with rear disks?
Also, what is that tool called that you used to compress the piston and can you just buy it at a FLAPS? If so, is there a particular size needed for the Saturn S or is it a universal size? Thanks!
@corvair1966monza The rear disk brakes are essentially the same except you will need the tool i have to rotate the piston back in it's bore.I bought my at AutoZone part # 27111
@richpin064 mab u dont remember of me asking u how to remove a damaged/stuck lug nut stud off. but u told me to saw it off. if i do tht and the wheel falls off how do i remove the remaining piece of the stud off the car, and when replacing with new stud do u screw it bakk on? hope i didnt confuse u THANKS.
@omarG19100 The normal way to remove the broken stud is with a hammer and sometimes a punch. To install the new stud just draw it into place with the lug nut.
I have an around the house tool box, and my dad had the 19 mm socket I really needed. But with a little elbow grease ( the roter was rusted to the wheel so I had to pound to off ) Driver side done today! Other side tomorrow. But again thank you so much!! @richpin06a I just have to say how grateful I am for this video and all the videos you have done. My SL1 is celebrating it's 10th Birthday and I want to keep her running for as long as she will let me (just hit 312k miles). There just doesn't seem to be a new car that is American designed and built with long term quality in mind sold at an affordable price. Anyway, I JUST finished doing my first brake job and it was soooo much easier with your video as a guide! THANK YOU AGAIN!
@richpin06a Thanks...one more question...does the retainer clip act as the spring that pushes the pad away from the rotor when the caliper is released?? I seem to be having some draging when I am driving.
@ahlborgify No the retainer does not push the pad away from the rotor .Check the guide pinbolts or the caliper piston they would lead to excess dragging.
@richpin06a Is it possible that the guidepin bolts are tightened to much?? Also, how do you check to see it the caliper piston is functioning correctly??
@ahlborgify The guide pins have to move freely in the caliper mount. You check the caliper piston for friction when compressing it after you have installed the pads.

Thank you for this very informative video. I was able to do my own brake job and save money. Well, I was saving money until I discovered I was using imperial tools to remove the metric caliper bolts, and I stripped the head of one of the bolds and had to buy a stripped head bolt removal tool. I wish I had paid more attention to the fact that YOU NOTED it was a 14mm bolt. Anyway, after that stupid mistake everything was smooth thanks to you.
I am about to try to replace my caliper bracket tomorrow ( in the pouring rain) because last time I didn't know what I was doing and snapped a caliper bolt off. Considering I know next to nothing about cars and am doing this by myself I have been very nervous. Your excellent informative video just calmed my nerves GREATLY!
Hi Rich Pin, great video. I am a mechanical engineer, and work as a Director of Quality. I'm a bit of a gear head and do all my own work. I thought to watch this video to get some tips before I started the job. I wanted to let you know I think your informational / instructional video is first class, a really great production. Thanks for the time and effort you put forth for all of us out here interested in saving a few bucks. Well done! Keep it coming. Dominick from Exton, PA.
Good video, but I would add one more thing to it. I usually pump out the piston from the calliper (not to fall out, or leak oil). Then I take WD-40 with a small nylon tube that I insert under the boot surrounding the piston, and I spray oil under the boot. Then I press back the caliper piston with that tool that you've got, I do this 2 or 3 times by moving the piston out and moving it back ( another person is needed to pump). The reason for this is to make sure your piston is working freely.
I am a newbie, I get 3 brakes need to be changed (both front and 1 rear right). Since I has seen many videos, I figured out your video and another are the best. I signed up to say thank you. Love you man.

Then I press back the caliper piston with that tool that you've got, I do this 2 or 3 times by moving the piston out and moving it back ( another person is needed to pump). The reason for this is to make sure your piston is working freely.
