  • he got out of that car like nothing happened

  • Very crasy!!!!!!

  • This is a REAL racing driver!!!!

  • cart waS IN THE FOREFRONT IN SAFETY PERIOD

  • 1982 was a terrible year for motorsport crashes in both f1 and indycar

  • Once again we see why dirt banks dont make good crash barriers.

  • @chupaisto1 well look what happened in 82 in f1. gilles villeneuve was killed at zolder in an accident remarkably similar to this one. didier pironi nearly died at hockenheim....in another accident that looked frighteningly like this one.

  • @chupaisto1 i'll agree that there was luck involved when it came to spectators not being injured or killed here. i meant it was design safety from the chassis standpoint that let simon walk away from this.

  • rollovers, they are very spectacular but not nearly as dangerous and fatal as head-on crashes.

  • When Dick Simon got older and was just an owner, I used to think he looked like Grandpa from the Munsters.

  • I never saw this crash, what an amazing shunt this is! Glad he apparently survived. Damn what a vionelt flip!

    $teven1970, the Netherlands

  • I find it bothering that these CART cars seemed to be able to stand up so well to incidents very similar to the ones that claimed Gilles Villeneuve's life and so badly injured Didier Pironi in the F1 Ferrari's. I know its a bit off topic, but does anyone agree? Those Ferrari's could have been, and should have been, a lot stronger.

  • @csykes23 formula 1 was VERY slow on the uptake where safety was concerned then. very reactive. so was nascar for that matter. cart was the leader the world over and still is as the indycar series sees it today.

  • Truly racers, the accident would not bother him...

  • you are right jrb5353 Dick Simon is a very good man!!!!!! he is a very good race driver and i cant belive he survived it!!!

  • Thank God Dick walked away from that. He is a good man.

  • ya...... the dust......

  • I'M SORRY?! it looked bad because of the dust? are you fucking kidding?

  • truly a racer.......indeed..........

  • tell us something about him.

  • SHIZZ LOL

  • He nearly went off the circuit and into the paddock trucks!

  • Riverside always looked really run down, like it was just barely maintained over the years.

  • Man the tracks were so unsafe back then

  • That looks almost similar to Gilles Villeneuve's crash

  • Cripes, you're right. That's one of the most violent accidents I've ever seen.

  • It's amazing that he walked away! In 81 the tubs on these cars weren't made of carbon fiber like they are today. Really lucky. Never saw this before, never knew it happened.

  • There's nothing to look at in the 909, just a bunch of Dirt People

  • Good thing that's not the 909. It wasn't even the 909 back then, it was the 714.

  • lucky guy! lots of courage!

  • When a car flips over and over like that the driver stands a fair chance of surviving -- none of the impacts is that hard and the kinetic energy of the wreck is diffused in the rolling. It's the single, hard impact wrecks that are deadly.

Dick Simon wasn't much of a racer but he was a nice man.

  • your statement is true for a monocoque type tub or car. NOT for the kind od car simon was in when this accident occured. the aluminium honeycomb tub he was in was given to colapse and he was very lucky not to be crippled or killed.

  • there were some very hard hits there, especially that last one that shot him back onto the track.

  • Oh my god, the car is made of paper, this guy have much lucky.

  • jesus that dude is hardcore.

  • i got a traffic ticket and had to go to traffic school. This crash was on the video lol

  • @jbracer86 Yeah, because your driving a jet fighter with 4 wheels at 200 mph.

  • WOW! Heard about it but never saw it until now. I used to work for his racing team 15 years ago when the late Scotty Brayton drove the #22 Amway car.

  • Damn, he just climbed out of the wreckege like it was no big deal. . .like he done it dozens of times before.

  • First view, first comment!

I saw this crash on a road safety awareness video during driver's ed in high school. I've been looking for this clip for some time. Thanks!
