i do not agree with death penalty. it is cruel. eye for an eye is so 17th century. killing people is a process you don't go and chop heads off like that. the speaker needs to stick to making laws and leave implimentations to attoney general.

In many political statements from our politicians, I notice the distance in millions of political miles between their philosophy and that of President Kibaki. President Kibaki lives in Kenya, papa hapa, and most politicians like Marende are in Utopia, if not destined for hell.

I would agree with hon Makende if he's referring to the current and past policians, most of whom should have been hanged many years ago. Our politicians are felons by most civilized nations standards. Kenyans long for this kind of justice.

@2190g1. Marende is being sincere that those on death row and not being executed are the ones perpetuating impunity in Kenya. What you seem to be arguing for is that we kill them simply because our jails are porous?

I think what was being addressed here was as simple as this: Instead of hanging 4,000 people (acoording to Siasabora's estimate) sentence them to life. Marende's point: eg if I commit a crime warranting the death sentence, I know I won't get it, well at least not for 30 or so years.

@siasabora. I know the argument I was making can be pushed to limits such as the one you propose - going to the extent of setting them scott free. To the contrary, instead of hanging them, as Kibaki has done, you give them life in prison. In prison, it is not all merry as some may have us believe. Also, they learn some skills which in the long run is helpful to society. The basic principal I am advocating for is reform of institutions, values and above all life.

Should such criminals be jailed in our porous jails that the AG can enter a nolle prosequi for you, as happened with Mungiki leader? Such people have also been known to escape jail and enter back into society and kill more.

Loss of ANY human life is unjustified. What leads to the many deaths in Kenya? Not a TOTAL lack of respect for human life but rather dire circumstances that lead to stupid actions and at times violent death of innocent people. I sympathize with all the victims. My point being that Marende has the capacity to help reduce causes of violent crimes thereby saving human life. Not just hanging everyone as people will continue to engage in crime if they have no other opportunities.

Marende NO!! NO!! The law that sentences people to death is a bad law. The death penalty in Kenya is completely unjustified, the emanation of inequity in all spheres of Kenyan life. Death penalty is supposed to be the common denominator of the crimes committed under that law and yet our Kenyan society is unequal and unfair in creating conditions to avoid these crimes. Give us an economically just society then hang those you want to hang. Otherwise MARENDE GO HANG YOURSELF.
