The real reason is because the TV channel decided to not do kids shows anymore for whatever reason and decided to get rid of every one of those shows that were at the time currently on the air, including "The Weird Al Show"

Al probably learned that by watching The Amazing Jonathon. he was a comedian/magician and he and Al were good friends. that was Jonathon's signature gag was taking a prop knife and cutting his arm to make it look like he was really cutting himself. there might be clips of Jonathon doing that here on youtube.
