  • Thanks for sharing the info. I was waiting a while for more information about actual off-camera flash... perhaps this video might be more aptly titled "connecting your camera to your flash for off-camera flash."

  • Question for you- I have a Canon t2i camera and a Lumpro LP160 flash. The flash works by itself and when I connect the flash to my camera via miniphone jack to the hotshoe on my camera it flashes right when I plug it in. But after it's plugged in I can't get it to go off with the shutter. Any suggestions?

  • My 60d has a wireless transmitter but how do I know what flash will work with it?

  • @jvdude0 yes it's called a slave unit. You attach it you flash and when the slave unit detects your in camera flash it triggers your external flash. You can buy entire studio strobe sets for under 100 dollars

  • hi, is there a wireless transmitter that allows u to use ur off camera flash (wireless) and ur built in flash at the same time?

  • So incredibly helpful. I was lost as to how I was going to connect my Sb-600's until watching this. I didn't know they made a device like that (I can't afford PocketWizard). The eBay one's worked great for me. Only the occasional misfire.

  • THANK YOU!! I was going to buy a mono flash head and now I don't have to! You are the man! Thanks a lot

  • keep your bloody feet still!

  • is it all the flash triggers won't work if you don't set to manual mode?

  • how come when i push my test button my flash goes off but not when pushing the shutter...help!!!

  • @BisforBirth

what cam are you trying it with. Canon Nikon? are the triggers you got for your cam? Not sure about others but if you get them for Nikon or Canon they are not the same they have one set for Canon and one for Nikon.

  • @zool1on i have a canon t2i not sure i got the trigger in a studio packagae off ebay no directions or names on anything except firfly name on my softbox.

  • @nzchica70

Hi, Yest it should. Do you have the cam set to manual and the flash set to manual. If you set your flash to TTL/ITTL it will not work.

  • Good stuff.

  • Nice Job....Learned a lot, Thanks.

  • I was wondering what you thought or have heard about the mini/max softboxes for flashes?

  • thanks, nice video, btw, How do you set up those setting. Manuel? if so, we need a Light Meter right? can not do with TTL ? thanks

  • Very nice job! You covered the basics very succinctly and I'm sure you've helped many.. Thanks for the effort

  • Thanks for the video. Good off camera flash on a budget. I love it.

  • I have an NIssin 866 pro with the x contact and 2 vivitar 285 but i wounder witch trigger will fire the nissin and the vivitar? i cant find one and no the skyport from elinchron is to expensive for me

  • Excellent video, thanks so much for posting!

  • BUENA ESA MOBY, JAJAJAJ

  • how so u setup up the wireless flash with the sony a100

  • is this thing ,the transmitter available for nikon d60? my nikon d60 doesn't have the function that d80 have which just can straightly goes wireless to the speedlight. so yeah i need your advice on this :)

  • this helped so much. could you point me in the direction of a cheap transmitter and receiver for my rebel xti and canon speedlite 420?

  • Try to sit still and not bounce your legs. It's distracting and lets people know you are nervous.

  • optical slave triggers (also from ebay) are another way to get your flash off camera. they cost about $10 each (including postage). I use my on camera flash (set at 1/32 power) as the master and it works well. I realize that this probably won't work outdoors, but it is a cheap alternative to inside work.

  • Pocket Wizards are starting to become a thing or the past, everyone is starting to buy Cybersyncs from Paul C Buff...

  • how do you manage the output from your flash ? ... with the ebay models, they make your flash fire at 100% all-the-time -- unless you have a flash that you can manually lower the flash output ( on the flash )

  • That's when knowing you ISO and F stop settings come in handy...

  • do u know if they sell these products for minolta or sony products, please reply

  • is there anyway to use an extrernal flash unit with a compact camera?

  • you can setup a flash as slave and it goes of when you fire the onboard flash the other should follow

  • yes. if you have a tripod mount on the bottom of your camera purchase on off-camera bracket and slave flash (I bought mine on e-bay), Attach the bracket to the camera, put on the flash, make sure to put it in the "slave" setting, your in camera flash will trigger your off camera flash. You can put the bracket on a tripod and keep the same setting and have a really off camera flash. two of them and you have the makings of a photo studio. I bought my bracket and flash for about $14 US on ebay

  • can you please give me the brand of your remotes?

And say I'm looking into a pocket wizard, what is a Hildozine 1001 Transceiver Caddy? I'm very intrested in this and this video along with david hobby's are great I just don't understand what to do with pocket wizards.

The ones you have (ebay) you just but those on the hot shoe or the flash and shoe of the body and it works correct?

    Please reply Rory Matt.

  • i have the same radio slaves as you, they miss fire all the time and i cant stand it, this is a big problem for me because most of my shots are skateboarding, i have to take the back of the reciever off so the battery and inside is exposed and they dont even work from a lot of views. do you know if i can modify them at all?

  • Nikon sb-400 and 600 dont have a pc port save some time and get a fm transmitter like a Cactus V2S for 40$ pocket wizards wont work either

  • Technically, you can make them work if you use a hotshoe to PC adapter. You can find them on almost any camera site. I have used a Nikon D300 with 2 SB 600's on flash stands, all triggered by pocket wizards. Goodluck and have fun with it!

  • I had never heard of the strobist movement before ... I use off camera speedlights for most of my work ... I'm surprised though that as a dedicated strobist you didnt go for an exclusively Nikon system, CLS means there is none of the messing around with triggers or sync cables, its all built in ...

  • hi, this is great video for a beginner like me.

A question here, let say I have 2 units of Nikon's flashes, and both of them attached to hot-shoe-wireless-trigger, can I fired a flash by using a trigger on my canon's body?

  • Hi, Yes you can..

  • Hey, this was very nice, thanks for sharing.

  • so you can use a nikon flash for canon if you have a hotshoe adapter?

  • only trough synch cable

  • i actually use a nikon sb-80dx on my eos 400d without any problems. though you have to manually adjust the ISO and aperture on the flash, but the exposure is great.

  • Thanks so much for these vids~!!! I find myself referring to them every now and then. Do you have a site with your work~? It'd be cool to see some of the stuff you do.

  • Thanks a lot man! I needed someone to explain it broke down like that. You hear so much lingo and it's hard to keep up with what some photographers are talking about. :)

  • Thank you so much for your videos. I just received my strobist kit about 1/2 an hour ago and your videos were priceless to me. (Kit didn't come with instructions on how to put everything together).

  • A video is worth a thousand blog posts

  • Hi, in the video you said that you choose to run the eBay trigger through the hot shoe instead of via the PC sync chord. It will make the flash too high for proper use with an umbrella - as you say in the part 2.

Doesn't a normal flash (like the Vivitar 285HV) come with a chord that runs from the flash to your camera or, in this case, the receiver? You could use the eBay triggers as Pocket Wizards and have them hanging on the side instead of being stuck under the flash. Is is possible? thanks

  • Ya sure you can run it like that. You have the extra cost of the sync cord but it will work.

  • good and thorough, but lose the sniffles next time please.

  • great information but the black background does not help in what your showing us, so please try to light your area a little better, still great information and budget wise

  • Thanks for your intro. I hardly used flash. So we can use any strobes with any cameras providing you have the hotshoe to go along? What's the brand is that D2?

    Rob

  • thanks bro

  • Where can I purchase this setup in New York city... Does anyone know?

  • Google BH photo, a huge store in NYC!

  • thanks a lot! you've answered all the questions i've been confused about!

  • excellent work my man...very nicely explained and shot , very informative...and whats all that bout u being a beggining amateur , u know pretty well what ure doing so enough being down to earth....

i have a question to ask.... im using a cam which isnt a dslr (panasonic lumix fz 20 ) can this wireless hot shoe help me trigger nikon speedlights with my cam , cause i dont even have a pc sync cord...so my last hope would be a wireless device, either that or get a new cam....

  • I'm pretty sure it would work since the Panasonic FZ20 has a universal hot shoe on it meaning it can use any hotshoe flash.

  • Good post! Very informative. Thanks!

  • thanks alot!

  • thanks a lot! thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

  • Great post!. StrobistLive ;-). Good visual information. Thnak you

  • Great stuff!
