I was born the same year color of money was released (1986). So naturally having a soft-spot for 80's movies I had seen it. I found out that it was more or less a sequel to the hustler and decided to check it out on netflix the other night. I blown away from the performances in this movie, already liked cool hand luke, but this might be my favorite newman movie. I like how piper lauries character looks similar to tom cruise GF in color of money. I found lauries character very to be alluring-sexy
This scene explains why Fast Eddie Felson made a comeback to playing pool in The Color Of Money. It explains how much pools means to him and how it has become a part of his life.It wasn't primarily because of Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise) but because of Fast Eddie's feelings about pool.
To me this fim is one of the great American "plays" of the 20th century--shot for the big screen instead of being acted onstage. If it hasn't been adapted for Broadway it should be as they wouldn't have to change a word of the brilliant screenplay.
These kinds of productions were big on TV and in film back then, and Newman starred in several others, called Teleplays, when he was starting out in the early days of TV.
Another great teleplay was Marty which was adapted for the big screen.
the youth of today, could not sit through this 2hr. movie.its in b&w,not enough special effects, would have to think to much.piper laurie stole this movie.they robbed herof the academy award.---67luke
i get that flow and i only know one other person that gets like that i hope other people get that too because it really is the greatest experience to have
Paul Newman is, well, Paul Newman and one runs out of adjectives, but Piper Laurie in this movie was beyond belief. Also I used to be a helluva shot pool shot before my eyes gave out.
This is just my opinion, but I think this is one of the all time great scenes in movie history. I love how the writers were able to convey a very special perspective on how it feels to experience greatness. A lot of movies will show you what it looks like, but very few will draw you in and teach you about it.
This is one of the best American films of the 1960's. How did Paul Newman not win the Best Actor Oscar for this performance? (He lost to Maximillian Schell for a predictable job in oh-so-long "Judgment in Nuremberg"). Piper Laurie was nominated in the Best Actress category for her terrific acting. If she'd been in the more appropriate Best Supporting category, she should won handily have won. Great, great movie.
You're all wrong. Joanne's real name is Samantha Dover and she was nominated for seven oscars and a three eyed sammy. Do your research before ya open ya danged mouths. Newbs
@MrSadGuru WTF?! i guess i'd rather be a newb than an idiot. her birth name was Joanne Gignilliat Trimmier Woodward (imdb d o t c o m). but the pwn continue & frankly ur making this far too easy; let's review the facts, kiddies: J.W.'s Oscar Nom.s:
*"Three Faces of Eve” (1957) *Plus the win
"Rachel, Rachel" (1968)
“Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams” (1973)
"Mr. and Mrs. Bridge" (1990)
(source: filmsite d o t o r g)

@soulfullyanointed haha. Oh my Gosh. You're right and I'm wrong! I'm such a silly head. What was I thinking! Sorry. And it seems she wasn't nominated for any three eyed sammies either, that was Margaret Mcgoodles the Irish actress from the 70s I was thinking of.

not true Joanne still earned three oscar nominations after that so don't down play her talent. and besides the hustler isn't a cult classic it's a flat out classic there's a difference
i know everyone wants to be u but u need some brains to go w/ those looks CalifoniaGirl (mispelled on purpose on hope) ;-). here's my earlier quote: "And though Joanne Woodward, Newman's wife, actually won an Oscar and was nominated three other times...." look, i know ur in high school but you need to read posts thoroughly before u respond; otherwise u look like an idiot. & prove that the Hustler is not a cult classic...or define the term "cult classic" if u can. this assignment is worth 10 pts.
that is your oppinion and I happen to disagree with it. and some of Joanne's films actually to have a cult following so do your research before you open your mouth.
@CalifoniaGirl actually i did my research and you didnt as apparently u werent aware that Laurie had 3 Oscar nominations to her credit (including 1 for the cult classic from which this scene is excerpted--when you wrote "Piper may not have been a huge star." the Three Faces of Eve features Woodward's signature performance which earned her an Oscar win for best actress, but it has nowhere near the cult status of the Hustler.
Piper may not have been a huge star like some of the actresses who acted opposite him his own wife included. but she was a nice juxdiposition with his character in the film.
@CalifoniaGirl folks, she was nominated for the Oscar for this very role--one of three nominations she received during her career. And though Joanne Woodward, Newman's wife, actually won an Oscar and was nominated three other times, I don't think she has more name recognition today than Laurie, who may even be more famous for her part in this movie which has more of a cult following than any film Woodward ever starred in.
Acting was first rate here. Mr Rossen seemed to know very well what he was talking about. Best performance from Ms Laurie, a not always remembered actress. Of course she was never a star. An advantage in her case.
@TheGardeliano she most certainly was a star and just because u were not alive at the time or living in this country doesnt make it otherwise. u have to realize that the mostly young starring cast of this film were mostly halfway up the ladder in 1961, with Newman and Scott still years away from turning in their Oscar-winning roles. In fact, just a few years prior to this, Newman was largely a TV actor acting in teleplays whereas Laurie had been gracing the big screen for years at this point.
Paul Newman is such an amazing actor!!! This movie is so beautiful and I love the way it was shot. Superb actors, great script, and gorgeous cinematography, this movie is a must see!!! :)
MOST people don't get this Movie. "Fast Eddie" was NOT "The Hustler"....EVERYONE else in the Movie were the Hustlers....The REAL Hustler was the Bert Gordon Character(George C. Scott) The ONLY one "Fast Eddie" was Hustling was "Fast Eddie"...the guy had Problems!
This is the way movies are supposed to be. Good acting, good script and good story is what it's all about. Not like we have today with all this CGI nonsense and overrated bad actors.
this is the best movie! some times form time to time i miss it, I got it on my dvdv, so I get the beer sit down comfortably in armchair and have a pleasure... it's deep story...
this movie is the best ... from time to time... when I miss it and I need to relax ... I put it on my dvd and watch it with the botle of beer... it is so deep story...
