Linked by my former sophomore English teacher, and it was she who pointed out how unfortunate the shortening of the band name was, before I noticed it myself... XD
I took a friend – who’d never heard of "Sweet Honey" -- to 1 of their shows.
I guaranteed her she’d like them. She was polite enough not 2 tell me right then that she thought it arrogant of me 2 say that, since how could I possibly know what she'd think of a group she'd never heard of, & had no idea what they, or their music, were all about, etcetc.
Few hours later, she was telling me it was "a religious experience" (she was, at the time, an atheist).
I love this video. I don't find where the group represents themselves as being a "Christian" groupl Dr. Ysaye Barnwell is the author of this particular song and she is an active Unitarian Universalist (I am also a UU & had the honor of attending one of her workshops last year). this song is in our UU hymnal and is very consistent with our beliefs!
I love this song. I find it highly motivational. Stop arguing. close your eyes, breathe deep. realize how great it is to be alive and free. It is a privilege to be alive. "For each child that's born a morning star rises, and sings to the universe who we are! We are one"
someonelse, if it makes u feel better, the Almighty just told me u already got your gold star for being a good little do-bee for the month. U can run along and play now.
And u might want to check on your caffeine levels; u seem like u might be a a tad overwound
"I'm not trying to fight"?? Really? Friend, that's ALL u r doing
someonelse06, has it occurred to you that in the many decades since this group began its work it is Christianity that has changed: become less inclusive, perhaps?
Christianity, at least the Christianity I practice, has NOT changed. Christianity has never been inclusive of any belief system where people ARE the Spirit of God. I'll admit it. Christianity is rather exclusive by nature. Consider this: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me," (John 14:6). That's pretty exclusive. This has nothing to do with race. This is purely theological.
I'm sorry to bring it down for all of you folks, but I find this song somewhat heretical. We are the breath of the ancestors? We are the Spirit of God? Those are no Christian principles. They may be fitting to African tribal religions, but those are decidedly unChristian philosophies. I wish to have no part of Sweet Honey in the Rock...
We are filled with the Spirit of God. WE are NOT the Spirit of God. GOD is the Spirit of God. The notion that we are God is Humanist heresy, not Christianity. My God is far greater than any collection of simple men. My God is the Creator of the universe. I'd say that's greater than any human union.
Look, I'm not trying to fight. SHITR are a talented group. My only point is to say that this is not Christian music, of Gospel. Feel free to sing whatever you want to sing, just don't misrepresent it.
Breath of the Ancestors makes sense in a proverb from the Native Americans-to paraphrase it: We don't own the land, but rather we are loaned it by our children. Aka we care for the land for those to come-in a way we are a breath-kinda hard to explain.
We are Sisters of mercy Brothers of love Lovers of life and the builders of nations. We are Seekers of truth Keepers of faith Makers of peace and the wisdom of ages. PEACE, LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING. STOP THE IGNORANCE.!!
I'm not trying to take away from the legitimacy of the art form. It is historically relevant, culturally relevant, and beautiful in its own right. The point I am making is that the music is not Christian. That is my only concern. And even that isn't a concern except that SHITR represent themselves as a Christian group.
I performed this song, as well as Ella's Song, as part of a choir, with them recently and they were a privilege to work with. They are all talented musicians and great people, and I might note that Ysaye has a remarkable voice. I looked this video up as a reference for the performance. I have no problem with them or their music. I just wish they wouldn't represent themselves as a Christian group.
I fully understand "God's people." The issue is that the last line in the chorus of this song says, "We are the Spirit of God." We ARE, that's where the issue comes from. The only Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit, which was poured out unto man on Pentecost. That does NOT make us, or any group of people, the Spirit of God.
OMG after hearing us sing this at all state my director wants us to sing it in chamber singers.... I'M GONNA KILL HIM!!! I HATE THIS SONG!!! (but i do <3 Ysaye!) did anyone take that workshop she was doing for the past couple of weeks? we saw her at a bunch of restaurants and chilled with her at dinner... =D
Affirmation is so uplifting to the psyche, ain't it? :) And you KNOW ya got it going on when you can Bring It like this without any instrumentalism even! GO SHITR!
Perhaps if you have a keyboard or piano as you listen solely to the tenor part, hearing it louder and playing at the same time may help you memorize it. Don't stop trying; you're feeling this song too much.
We are singing this in school right now and I love it!!!

does everything that a Christian group sings have to be explicitly Christian? 1 Cor 9:19-23

Does the term "God's people" mean anything to you? Thats what I thought they meant anyway, not we ARE God..I know im not GOD.
