Help stop turtle extinction! these turtles out lasted dinosaurs ... yeah. They have been here for along time. Don't harm them. I'm actually one of the lucky ones because in louisiana i get to see turtles laying eggs about 1 time a year :]. Most people think its gross but really.. It's a wonderful experience to just see something like that =]
Wow you really care about animals.Like I do to and i have started a progrm called adotp a pond. And you have to do it.You get to take care of frogs! Please reply.
i absolutely love turtles and think that they should be protected. because people dont care about them, this goes for all turltes, sea turtles, and freshwater turtles, i see lots of turtles run over where i live and i get so mad, people go out of there way to hit them.
I saw these turtles, beautiful animals. It is a verz nice gesture to try and help these animals. If 35 dollars is not much for you, you should definitely helps these creatures...
Love your video with cool facts. Might do my own. Adult turtles and hatchlings can actually walk into urban towns, guided by lights on hotels and constructions etc. On a project in Cape Verde, we had to drive a huge adult turtle back to the ocean.
@snoozeyoulose19 Oh wow. Thankfully we have a LOT of rules regarding lights near the beach during nesting seasons. But they still need a lot of protection.
@xAHLin - Hey, if you want to see exactly what a turtle nest looks like, see my youtube video called Santa Maria Turtle Project 2009, particularly at 1.44 secs.
If turtles nest too close to the high water mark, we relocate them to hatcheries to make sure the eggs don't get washed away by the sea.
Same if they nest too close to vegetation or if we suspect hatchlings will be led astray by city lights.
Also if we see tyre marks where people have been driving, we tend to relocate those too.
gee, i didn't know there was such a thing as adopting a nest. Thats cool, and it will be good for the sea turts. I'll consider adopting one... will this "scheme" be around in the next few years?
I don't consider it a "scheme" when the money goes directly to the local Marine Science Center. And if you're here, your nest gets marked with a tiny flag that bears your name, so anyone walking by will see that you sponsored that nest. If you're in business, this is a great way for people to want to do business with you, because they see that you've done something to help an endangered species.
Florida needs toget consistent -shouldnt have cars on the beach at all I would think it would be hard onthe car Saltwater! they put up restrictions and than break them for certain groups like the newage drum circles that goout and break all the rules by beating on drums its against the law to blow off fireworks do to theloud noise and the lite these drum circles attract big crowds at nite create lotsof noise and the differing lites peeps bring to them steping all around the nests not knowing
Cars only drive on Daytona Beach. The turtle nests are all south of that, in the no-drive section. And if anyone is caught disturbing the nests, or with lights on during the hatching season, they're find $10,000.
Thank you so much for this info! I just posted it on myspace... I feel it is still very important to pass along, even though it's posted in feb of 08. I LOVE TURTLES!!! They can definitely use our help. THANKS BibleGirl7 for posting this!!!
You are very sweet to care so much about the turtles. I needed to see this after the video I just saw. Stupid guy almost kills a young sea turtle! Tell him what he did wrong will you?
Thanks. And instead of adopting a nest, I volunteered and spent some time at the animal hospital. Money is tight right now, but my time has some flexibility. So that's the route I took =)
You can? I'm in St. Augustine a lot, but the way the road curves, I don't think I've even seen the ocean. Or maybe it's because I'm so used to living by one that I haven't even thought about it. But I like to go wander around St. George Street, I've been to the fort, I go to the Coach store in the outlet mall on the west side of I-95 all the time! And my daughter and I like to go to Pizza Alley. We also like The Dixie Cab Company =D
People have to pay to drive on the beaches here. The county can't afford to keep the beaches clean, or even maintain the video cameras that protect the sea turtle nests from people who think it's fun to poke the nests with sticks, if not for the income from the vehicle parking passes.
Good! =D I've moved several of them out of the road. I'll stop my car and block all the traffic, then pick them up and carry them toward the lakes and ponds by the road. The soft-shell kind are really funny too. They stick their heads way out to see where we're going. LOL
I was in one of my client's houses last week, and he had a pet turtle they had bought when it was tiny. You know; the ones in the pet stores? Well, it's now 2 feet long and they've had it for 39 years!!! Holy crap!
I used to live in the Orlando area, and that's where I'm headed right now. Florida is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful states our country has to offer. I haven't been up yonder yet, but I plan on visitin' Daytona beach as soon as I get a chance, looks nice. I don't know about the whole mistake thing, I've had a few beers and I have no idea of what's going on. My comment might seem like I'm totally sober, but the backspace key was required several times. Lol, see ya later, Biblegirl.
I have always liked you and with this video I like you even more. The sea turtles are my 2nd passion after wolves. At Padre Island, in Texas, I got to see release of babies and like you said, we could not wear white (equating to light) or it would turn them the wrong way. I would LOVE to sit down with you and talk about this, I'm getting all excited now.
That's cool I will have to tell my Dad about that too just in case he does not know already. He is in Daytona too. When I visited him a couple years ago I learned about the lights being turned off for the turtles. Pretty neat.
I thought this was just the coolest idea. I'm going to adopt my own nest in a couple of weeks. The nesting season doesn't start for a few more months, so there's plenty of time.
If you listen to my words, I pretty much gave it away. But maybe it's not as obvious as I thought it was. Somebody who's anal retentive is going to notice. =P
1. Take videos of the cars that get stuck in the rising tide.. and share on youtube!
2. Comforting thought: the rich guys that own property on the ocean front obviously don't believe in global warming and sea level rise! They'll find out! hahahaha! (OK. not so funny for most of Florida!)
OK Mr. Twisted. 1) I don't have access to the video footage =( and cars are not allowed on the beach at night so I can't get my own. 2) The houses all have sea walls in the driving section. The houses in the no-drive section don't need sea walls because the natural dunes are still there.
Sobering fact: after the hurricanes in 04, New Smyrna Beach-1 town further south than Ponce Inlet, lost so much of their beaches to erosion that there's no room to even walk there anymore!

AND there are now hidden cameras set up to catch anyone who goes near a nest. The locals aren't the ones causing the problems. It's the tourists. But the get caught by the cameras.
Actually the driving and parking is OK as long as people abide by the rule. And if they don't, there are hidden cameras. They WILL get a huge fine. And there are no-drive zones. Those are where the turtles put most of their nests =)
Well, to be more detailed, driving and parking on the beach is a "bad" idea because of the oil and other fluid leaks, which can fowl the eco system IMHO.
That's an awesome idea, the turtles are so pretty! And just so you know, where I live, (in the summer... when it's nice) our beach is an attraction for visitors... and I'm not a sun person either... pale as a ghost... my parents however are sun worshipers - always on the beach... I don't plan to die from skin cancer thank you very much! Great video!!!! :-D
I feel the same way about the sun and skin cancer. People don't realize that just having a tan means you've damaged your skin. Plus it causes premature aging.
My Aunt was 48 when she lost her battle to cancer which originated from a mole on her back which was malignant, (sp?) evolved into a brain tumor, and sucked the life out of her. It was a painful downhill road with her... But if nothing else, I learned how serious that kind of stuff is, and how fragile life is... Too bad my parents still bake themselves...I do believe that most of their damage was done in their youth years. Oh - and premature ageing is ICKY!!!!!!! :-P
It's unbelievable how many people I know who have already had pre-cancerous spots removed, yet they still bake themselves. It's only a matter of time.
Well, back in the 50s, the beach was part of the race track. This is the home of NASCAR. The used to run the circle down A1A around to the beach, then back onto A1A.
lol, I know this is serious, but I had an image of people building porches in front of the nests, installing themselves with banjo, rocking chair and shot gun and shouting out to the taurists 'get offa my nest!'
Help stop turtle extinction! these turtles out lasted dinosaurs ... yeah. They have been here for along time. Don't harm them. I'm actually one of the lucky ones because in louisiana i get to see turtles laying eggs about 1 time a year :]. Most people think its gross but really..

Pretty cool. I once saw seat turtles actually digging and laying in Costa Rica. VERY cool.
Nice informative serious vlog, Lisa!

You're a naughty boy! Now take your pet haters and go back to your little corner.
Oh! And send me some bloopers or outtakes! Please?

An excellent excuse for me when people complain about me staying in my room all day, thanks very much!

That was great. Why people would be allowed to drive on the beach to begin with is way beyond me.

LOL!! A true image of the 60s. Only you or John would imagine that one.
