A stark reminder to all the young ladies out there that sex is not necessarily love, nor should it be, but that you may be deceived.... not by a "lover" but by your own expectations. Dreams and fairy tales can come down hard.
I learned about her in lecture. I think she's an idiot. The body of her work comes down to "I thought sex meant love; now I'm heartbroken! I don't want other young girls to feel the same." I am embarrassed to be the same gender as her. She gives artists a bad name.
PS. I don't mean it's sexy or hot because of tits. It just tries to be deep and unusual... and maybe controversial. It's not, not to me. It's nothing original or inspiring at all. It's just plain stupid and silly. Would work as a fun tape that you did with your girlfriend ... but art? "Artvideo" ? In my opinion - no.
Stop with this "it's still art" bullshit. Soon people gonna take photo of a poop and call it art. Sad, but true. Wanna be artists make such a stuff all the time. They have no real, seenable talent, so they just call it "abstract" or "experimental", while it's just random crap.
But strictly about this one: the truth is that you would make comments like "Most idiotic thing I've seen on YouTube" ... IF she wouldn't show her tits. But she did, and hey, that always works.
callsobrook i'm sure your question is rhetorical, but the reason is that the world itself is full of morons..... and many of them have computers with microsoft windows os slaved to botnets
Show. Este comentário dignifica a comunidade do YouTube.
why are there so many morons on youtube? 'this is not art it's insulting and fails to deal with gender representations blah blah.' don't think it to death with boring ideological presuppositions. first it's funny, then it's sad, then it's scary.... a beautiful, challenging, evocative and deceptively simple piece.

What is compelling about a woman debasing herself in front of a camera like this? It's so easy...it's been done so many times...In fact it was done, like most things, BY MEN before women! We beat you to it you artistic failures!
well blastocyst im really curiouse what kind of super artistic thing it is you did that in anyway "beats" this work... probably nothing..and please talk for your self not all man are as narrow minded as you are
As an artist I try to understand where the art is coming from and I'm sorry to say this leaves me clueless...There's nothing sensual, or clever or appealing about this piece....maybe I need to read what Pipilotti had in mind...still it's not an enjoyable piece for me to watch...I will check out her other works to be fair
this piece is ok, because it has some scary and funny things together. the blurry effect also lets the watcher quess what the woman looks like. its not a master piece, but there are several layers to be found and it works in its simplicity
It seems to be about the politics of representation especially women's bodies in music videos. Her breasts are hanging out but the screen is fogged up so you cannot have that voyeuristic pleasure. Then towards the middle of the video (see 2:45) her movement distorts her image even more. Now she is in control of who can see her and how much they can see. I guess you could call it a taking back of women's representation via distortion.
That's just my interpretation, there can be 100s more.
They actually had this video playing in my school gallery last semester and I for some reason i didn't know it was Rist is so different than what I'm used to from her. Still don't know the point of this video but then again some video art is like wtf?? and you just never get it. maybe i need to check out the actual song she used.
I don't understand why everyone who calls this art and explains why has their comments voted into the red while someone who puts it down gets the thumbs up? Just because you don't appreciate art, it's still art. That's the beauty. I think this video is interesting. I will look further into Pipilotti Rist.
Obviously you haven't studied video art, or you would see how this piece is in conversation with those of Joan Jonas. The self-exposure is distorted to the point where no man (or woman) can actually gain any pleasure from it; exposure without the chance for objectification of the female form.
no, no--the comment "Obviously you haven't studied video art...etc"--I didn't make that comment, but it appeared here nonetheless. It strikes me as odd, and I have no idea who made it under my name...
I saw a clip from this on "Egg: The Art Show" on PBS in New York several years ago. I thought she seemed interesting and wanted to check out some more of her work, but I never heard of her again. Of course, that was before I had Youtube, so I thought it was worth a shot! Hearing John Lennon sing, I could almost imagine it would be the sort of film he and Yoko might have made in their early days together - even the vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Yoko LOL :)
I remember seeing this for the first time and it irritated me at first and then started to scare me and freak me out. There's something about this... a hidden message that most wouldn't pick out. I like some of her work and this is one of them.
i disliked this video to the point of disregarding altogether. i go to an ar school, and for my time based class we watched this, and all i could think of with how she played with speed in editing and sang being random in movement. how does that qualify as anything. and somemay say maybe that was her point. i doubt it. i want to respect her as an artist, but this to me just ridiculous
I'm sorry to the idiots who do not appreciate this artwork for what it is. It would have taken so much time to edit that and make it look how it does now. So before you mock what Pipilotti Rist has made, think about the poor quality meaningless shit you've made in comparison to her artworks.

It could just be that I'm remembering badly from 2004, but do you know of any variations or versions of this video?
the "song" is from "the breeders - happiness is a warm gun" (it started at 3:19)the lyrics are: She's not a girl who misses much Do-do-do, oh yeah She's well acquainted With the touch of a velvet hand Like a lizard on a window pane Man in the crowd With the multicoloured mirrors On his hobnail boots Lying with his eyes While his hands are busy Working overtime The sole confession of his wife Which he ate and donated to the National Trust ...
"I'm not the girl who misses much" of Pipilotti Rist is the antecedent of Madonna when made that video call "Hollywood." Where her (Madonna) it proposes the same stereotype to the Pipilotti Rist. In which Rist plays with the different speeds of reproduction of the video it covers. And that Madonna also uses it as resource.
