Supposedly Debbie Harry's very first band, before the Wind and the Willows, was The First National Una Phrenic Church and Bank with Charlie Nothing. This was a psychedelic jazz band, although I have no idea what she did in it. The band recorded an album, 'Psychedelic Saxophone' in 1967 but she may have been in the WITW's by then. I'm impressed with this song and Here's Looking at You as original compositions.
Everything you did with the Downtown 81 footage and the photos was perfect, the band member driving the taxi, Debbie Harry being kissed by Jean. And black & white is great, makes me want to watch the whole movie like that.
This is some trippy modal jazz, here. Now, here's what I'd like to know. The liner notes say Debbie wrote this one solo. But this is some pretty comples stuff to come up with just humming. Does she play piano? Guitar? She must be damn good at SOMETHING to come up with these chord changes.
thanks rockbird! like the vid. i was just listening to autoamerican, "faces" playing and i wondered if anyone would have posted this less known and brilliant work by my favourite band. thanks for posting this! i agree with your comments. as a long-time fan and defender of blondie, it's always saddened me a bit that most people seem unaware of their amazing range and what it meant to be the trail-blazers of new wave music. (i suspect "world music" owes them a debt as well.) good job!
"angels on the balcony" is probably the best song that blondie ever recorded.
